I got Far Horizons a while ago, but haven't been able to delve into it until a couple days ago. I haven't seen a lot of coverage of this supplement, partly because there has been a lot of attention on F&D beta.
I'm already finding this tome invaluable. I think the next campaign I want to run will be set in a colony...if there is anything that brings that SW/Firefly crossover to life, it's this book. After all, a "colony" could still be multiple planets/settlements in a single star system.
But most immediately useful for me is the great section on how to deal with social skills. I suspect the FFG team took to heart a lot of the comments people have made about the efficacy of Talents like "Scathing Tirade" and others. One example from the book reminds me of a thread long ago where somebody Tiraded Mara Jade into dropping her lightsaber by making a comment on her fashion sense and clothing...a scenario I found just *** ( < replace with a word starting with "r")
Essentially, in FH they reiterate that such social uses are always contextual. There is nothing wrong with increasing or upgrading the difficulty, especially with repeated attempts against the same target, and the targets will not always react in the same way. They may not be chagrined at all, they may become violent, or eventually just immune. Overuse has its drawbacks.
That's just one example from the book, and I appreciate the insight and guidelines. The other social skills and careers get similar in-depth treatment. I feel like this section of the book alone was worth the price.
