X-wing vs Armada

By Duke of Advil, in X-Wing

For those who have played both which do you prefer and why? I have been gone for a while and have heard nothing about Armada.

No one's heard anything more since gen con week.

Plus there's a whole sub forum for armarda now try asking there :)

Considering Armada hasn't been released yet, no one has truly played it.

Well, presumably someone has played it--GenCon can't be the first time FFG had the components on the table.

EDIT: Though I suppose that's not much help to the OP, since the people who have played it undoubtedly can't talk about it... I'll shut my pie-hole now.

I've watched a video of it being played. Probably makes me as much an expert as almost everyone else.

I think it'll be completely different than x-wing, expect for being SW. I just hope I have the cash and time to play both.

Am I the only one that envisions a multi-table game with Armada on one table and X-Wing on another. And whenever a dogfight is to occur in Armada, you switch tables and play it out X-Wing style!

Yes that would be a ridiculously long game.

An interesting idea, although I suspect that it would make for a long weekend of gaming.

I think that would make playing a messy chore, rather than fast-moving fun. I think it's much more suited for campaign play, where you play a game of Armada and X-Wing separate-but-simultaneously, and take both games into account when decided the winner. You can have little triggers in each game that give a small bonus to the other one, like when you play a 500pt game of WH40k inside of a bunker that affects a 3000pt game going on somewhere else.

I just stumbled on to the Armada forum, that is how I heard about it. (Did not even realize it was not released yet) I have been spending my time and money on an AR build and phase 2 clone bucket and armor, so I missed everything going on here for a couple months.

I think it could be great if you're trying to add stakes to your X-Wing games. However, I think that if your focus is playing Armada it'd just be cumbersome.

If there is a way to translate from the one to the other in terms of points and what-not, it would be awesome! However I do think that a fighter skirmish at the Armada level would still be an epic game at the X-Wing level, because they involve squadrons, and squadrons are typically 12 ships, while our Squads are generally 3-6.

Still, I'd do it. :D

Thinking about it, it would be kinda cool to play an Armada game to determine who got to use the "off-table turbolasers" rule ...

Since there were 3-4 threads on that topic back when armada was announced, no, I don't think your the only one.

Armada is still in its beta stage.

Having demo'd it at Gen Con, I think it has potential, but it can't replace X-wing. Will I get it? Probably.

I demo'd both Armada and Imperial Assault. I will more than likely get Armada over Imperial Assault, considering the current price point (for both) is $99.95, plus the revealed expansion for Armada. (The price for the expansion is unknown.)

Whats the revealed expansion?

I'm going to say, since they are looking at a release in 4 to 6 months, they are well, well beyond the beta phase, and the game is pretty much set in stone.

Also, keep in mind that Imperial Assault is a more complete experience than the Armada core. We don't know what the expansions will cost, though Descent does give us a very good road map of how things will be released. Armada expansions are quite expensive.

Gladiator Class SDs for Imperials, Assault Frigate mk2 for Rebels, plus fighter packs (2 each of 4 types for each faction) while not "revealed" there will probably be single expansions of the pieces in the core set too

Sorry. Chistion Petersen mentioned that there will be expansions, featuring more capital ships that will be in the Starter Set (CR-90, Nebula-B Frigate, and a Victory Class Star Destroyer, along with the fighters). The NEW expansions will include Y-wings, A-wings, et al, and the Imperial counterparts, as well as more capital ships.

The more I see, the less it appeals to me.

Armada looks awesome to me, and I am very excited for it.

I will still definitely play X-Wing, though I will not be able to keep up purchases for both, so we will see what gives after I get Armada in my hands...

It could be part of a longer campaign that spans several days. Playing through the complete set of xwing missions is a ridiculously long game too -- but you don't have to do it all at once.
