Want to share your Star Wars Shapeways?

I give 3D prints in the "white strong and flexible" materiel a gentle brush with a soft toothbrush before painting. This removes any plastic dust from the printing process and leaves a smoother surface.

I also soak the "frosted detail" materiel in soapy water overnight before painting to remove the residue of supporting wax.

Hot soapy, or lukewarm?

I use cold water as I don't know how heat resistant the resin is.

i wash in warm to get rid of residue but ive never tried soaking overnight. ill have to give that a try

Bad news people.

For all of you that like having custom 3D Printed miniatures there are some bad news coming from shapeways. They have decided to change their pricing formula to include overall volume and number of independent parts.

There are some fixes and tweaks that can be done to reduce the impact, but higher prices are going to be almost unavoidable.

Thats why I recomend anyone that wants to buy from shapeways to do so before October 7th when the changes will take place.

Ill try to fix my models as much as I can or search some other site that gives similar quality and prices, but there might be some models that will get absurdly overpriced (goodbye Nebulon B).

lol do you think your nebulon b is the cause of this? :P

No it's because of speculators artificially raising the price of light their buying barrels of the stuff and just letting it sit there!

**** you wall street.

Ive been looking at it closely. Seems like many of the small models will indeed get LOWER prices. The ones that are more compact. Toscan Fighters, R-41, Assault gunboats, Battlestar Galactica fighters... Shuttles also get less expensive. Eta, Theta, Nu... even the Imperial Landing Craft will now have an affordable price.

Ships that are getting more expensive. Almost all Huge and Large ships. Fury Interceptor, Nebulon B, Gozanti Cruiser, Otana...except the shuttles and the Hound's Tooth. Almost every TIE is getting more expensive, with the exceptions of the TIE Predator and the Scimitar Bomber.

Stands also get more expensive. And groups are also getting more expensive. I can do something about the groups so they are not as expensive as buying them independently, but they will get more expensive anyway.

I noticed that a ship model that I uploaded before will become much cheaper (40% less), even though it's quite large. In comparison, a very small volume item that I have will increase from €3.55 to €20.36 (high labour cost), simply because it's a lot of small individual pieces.

Yep, since my huge ships are very hollow. They suffer the most from this change.

It is a bit odd though. My Sentinel class cost is increasing (only by a few bucks which is good considering that it isnt cheap in the first place) But a large retro style space station (for another game) which is a huge space taker is going down in price by a considerable amount. They have odd ways of calculating things

Hve you sprued them together? that should make them count as a single item and therefore be cheaper

Oh no, that means the Action IV transport, doesn't it? Blast, I was on the fence about that one, but I don't know if I want to drop more than $75 on that...

No, not yet. Need to see if it'll help, and if it even makes sense for the final product. It's a small thing for myself mostly anyway, but might have been nice if I could've "released" it to some friends

It made a difference to some of my multi ship sets. worth a try

I would buy some. Especially interested in the Ravens Claw, however I am teeeerrible at painting. :P

If you think we weren't all terrible when we started your wrong, you only get good through practice and more practice then when your decent you practice even more.

I just ordered the Imperial Gozanti, I've been eying it for awhile now but thought maybe FFG would be making one, but I'm tired of waiting, so it'll proxy a Corvette when needed, and be a nice mantle piece.

Actually, from peg to peg it has the same size as the Medium Trabsport, so it will work as a proxy for that one better.

I know it's a lot to ask, but is it possible to get a list (or see it online at the description of the models) what the prices will be after the change? I have quite a list put together and was planning on ordering within the next two weeks, now I would like to see if I should wait, or not, or split order :-)

Star Wars only, though.

Hmm..Taking that into account I made a Custom Card for the Gozanti by using the stats from the back half of the CR-90. Stats are about the same as the Transport but has a weapon hardpoint.

My biggest problem is the grainyness I see on the models. I was thinking about getting some, but I want to see one finished and in High def. I just don't like the grainyness I have seen on them.

Look at pictures with materials like Frosted Ultra Detail or Frosted Detail. You wont see grain there.

Got my Imperial Gozanti in frosted detail today. It looks really nice, very lightweight I didn't realize it was hollow. I'll let is soak in water tonight as i've seen posted to get residue off it, and start painting it tomorrow.
