Tape is you're friend. ![]()
dont remove paint just go over it otherwise u risk damage to the mini and edges.

Tape is you're friend.
Sorry if i'm being annoying but i meant buy using it to cover and mark stripes for placing more paint.
I have yet to dive into painting my minis, but I expect to do so very soon.
Having said that, I have done a lot of research as to what works and what doesn't, and I feel very confident at this point.
Removing the factory paint is really optional. It isn't necessary, depending on how much of a repaint you're planning on.
If you just want to change a few colors here and there then there's no issue with just painting over the factory paint since it is so thin to begin with. You just want to make sure that you're thinning your paints and not globbing it on.
If you plan a more extensive color change you may want to consider a thin coat of primer on the mini to start off, however I have seen some amazing work where someone just went over the whole thing from the get go.
After that, make sure you choose a nice wash (50/50 water and dark paint) to fill in the crevices and accentuate the detail. And if you so choose, a dry brush highlight can help the whole thing 'pop'.
Citadel paints are good but pricey, I've seen conflicting views on them, but all in all I haven't seen one person mention Valejo paints and have anything bad to say about them. From what I gather they are at the top.
The only thing left is patience and practice.
I've heard to buy crappy dollar store toys to practice on before you jump into minis, but I think that has more to do with your confidence level.
I wouldn't bother removing the factory paint - you can paint straight over it with acrylic model paints with no problems. There's a link in my signature to a Scum HWK that I repainted, giving most areas a new basecoat, a shading wash (black paint, water and a drop of glaze medium) and a few highlights.
I tend to use P3 and Vallejo paints. The grey in my HWK is Vallejo's "Cold Grey" - everything else comes from Privateer's P# range. Vallejo are slightly better if you drybrush highlights; P3 are easier to mix blends with.
If you're worried about paint getting on things it shouldn't, you can buy a roll of low-tack painter's tape (or specialty airbrushing tape, for a few extra dollars) - these let you mask off those parts, and can be cleanly removed afterwards without leaving residue or lifting the paint.
Good luck! X-Wing figures are great fun to paint.
thanks =D
i have left of paint from my warhammer days, so i will be using citadel paints and washers, no idea on paint scheme yet
