Uh oh... are we looking at another long delay?

By The Gas, in Star Wars: The Card Game

Looking at the upcoming products page, Between the Shadows and the first Rogue Squadron pack haven't even gone to the printer yet.

It's been stated before that sometimes the product status doesn't get updated and sometimes entire stages are skipped. It's possible that they just haven't updated the status of either yet.

I hope not. The game had made a resurgence after the newest waves of packs started coming out, would hate for that to fall back off.

I hope not, but I'm betting yes.

This is true, but the fact that other LCG's are actively updating while we are not concerns me.

I think an optimistic guess for Between the Shadows is late October, realistic, Late November or Holiday release.

I'll try my best to word this carefully, so as not to sound like a doomsayer, but there's been something I've been feeling for a while now, but haven't said.

Lately, I've found myself having doubts about this LCG's future. I want to remain optimistic, because I enjoy playing Star Wars and would like to continue to do so. Of the CCGs that have borne the brand, I consider this one to be the best reflection of the tone of the films. I don't believe FFG intends to cancel the game, at least not in the immediate future. But I've played enough CCGs in the last decade to know that it's not a good sign when delays start happening with no word from the company, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this. Regardless of what the company intends to do with Star Wars: The Card Game, it could quickly reach a point where people are hesitant to buy product for the game because of these delays and the fear that they hint at an end in sight. I'll be honest: I've fallen behind in purchasing packs for this game. Not entirely by design, but admittedly influenced by the sparse communication regarding the delays.

I can't help but be reminded of an experience I've had with NBC dramas in the past, most memorably Studio 60 and Kings. If you haven't heard of these shows, it's because their time on the network was incredibly brief. Kings went for about eight or nine episodes, I think? I guess they didn't do too well ratings-wise, and what viewers they did have were more or less forced to stop watching as the former show was regularly preempted by some kind of sports game (might've been hockey; don't recall as I'm not much of a sports fan), and the latter was moved to different timeslots multiple times during its short run. I eventually became convinced that the network was deliberately mishandling the shows so that people would give up on them, at which point they could be canceled quickly and quietly. Now again, I don't think that's what FFG is trying to do here, but I still find it difficult to rationalize purchasing more product without some assurance of the company's commitment to the game. That's the decision I have had to make for the time being because of my limited gaming budget, but I'm worried that people will stop buying for the game because of the delays, and ultimately make it into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

That being said, there is a new Force Pack revealed on the main page: Evasive Maneuvers, the third pack in the "Rogue Squadron" cycle. If I weren't so broke, I'd be ecstatic. This is really shaping up to be a nice cycle.

I think we need to wait and see how long of a delay we actually get before making a judgement. I'd say a 2-3 month gap between the last pack and the big box expansion is perfectly acceptable, as compared to other ccg's.

We will see what happens. The release dates this year are fairly similar to last year, with the exception of EoD that doesn't have a comparable product. That being said, I am hesitantly optimistic it will be released before the World Event weekend, but I am not confident it will be tournament legal, even if released.

IMO I'd be happy to get the big box by Christmas and perhaps the new cycle in January, a few months between a big expansion and new cycle is acceptable.... We shall see what the FFG in the sky has in store for us in due time.

I think right now the problem is a lot of us think it is going to be the same as last year. Hopefully we are wrong and can finally put thst unfortunate set of circumstances behind us.

Good news: Between the Shadows' status updated to "at the printer" today.

Well it says Q3 2014 now, which kinda ends in a week, so yeah. But it might be nice to have a couple of months to digest the last cycle as our player group is yet to fully integrate the cards into our decks and experiment. The game could go with a slower pace, but it won't get many committed players from it.
