OT: Best Star Wars book?

By tiefanatic, in X-Wing

I'm gonna be ostracized from the forums for saying this, but I like NJO, Legacy of the Force is also pretty good, and of course, the X-wing books (especially the Allston ones, even if the Rogues are better than the Wraiths)

What no one else has mentioned though is I actually loved the Han Solo Adventures by Brian Daley.

the Han Solo Adventures by Brian Daley are great.

Darth Plagueis.

If you are adventurous, listen to the audio book. It's amazing.

Completely agree. After I read it, I signed up for audible just to get this one.

I also love all of the technical and reference books of Star Wars; Essential Guides of whatever and the Atlas are my favorites.

i really enjoyed the Han Solo trilogy,Dark Lord the rise of Darth Vader and from the Old Republic Revan and Decieved.

I like Allston and the Han Solo trilogy is a favorite of mine as well.

Tales of Bounty hunters and Tales from Jabba Palace are my favorites.

Everyone else will mention the thrawn trilogy/duology, so I'm going to go with a dark horse, the Black Fleet Crisis trilogy. Other than luke's pointless quest to find his mother everything in that story is spot on, especially the inclusion of an actually alien culture, not just blue-skinned aristocrats.

Black Fleet is second to me behind the Thrawn books. I think Black Fleet is underated by most, but the writing is good and the enemy is even more bloodthirsty than the Empire. Vey well written series, except as you say for Luke's misadventures to find his supposed mom and the sudden end.

The Alan Dean Foster ghost-written Star Wars novelization. Just the right amount of expansion from the film.

I love Revan, I read in two weeks, and I like the mixed feelings of the end, greettings.

That book was very good. The ending was... depressing.

I'm going to jump in on the Revenge on the Sith wagon and say that that one is one of my favorites as well. X-wing and Thrawn are pretty great.

I actually rather enjoy quite a bit of NJO, or at least the overall story. A lot of the individual books can be hard to work through, and it gives off a strong atmosphere of depression and hopelessness for a good chunk of it that makes it challenging to stay interested. That said, Traitor is an amazing book that I only appreciate more with continued reads, and the three books around it (the two-part rebel defense of Borleias and Destiny's Way) are a ton of fun because it is so satisfying to finally have the heroes start turning things around. 9+ books is a lot of losing to work through.

Darth Bane rocks, and Yoda: Dark Rendezvous is hilarious.

Halfway through the Heir to the Empire book, can't put it down!

Has anyone bought A New Dawn yet? I'm interested in picking it up since it is the first book under the new "canon," but my reading/hobby budget is a bit tight right now (and only going to get tighter with Rebel Aces and Wave 5). So I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on it.

I am reading right now, It's not bad. It doesnt feel any different from the old timeline just yet. probably once we hit post ROTJ is where things are going to start feeiling a bit weird.

NJO is 19. I actually enjoyed NJO a lot. Everything I've tried to read after that has been a major let down, though. Things were going in interesting directions...then all the other series decided to go in decidedly less interesting directions (as least to me).

I've only read the first few in the X-Wing series, and have found them decent, if not quite what I was hoping they'd be (things like Wedge single-handedly taking out an enemy installation when they thought it would be necessary to bring the whole squadron, and Corran's [Force-guided, to be sure] accidental rescue of every other hopeless character/plot-line are garbage writing, IMO).

Thrawn Trilogy was, of course, great, though even it has its flaws.

I was really looking forward to Outbound Flight, and that was a major disappointment.

I loved Republic Commando in the beginning. The second book was hard to get through, but worth it at the end. After that, the love story between Jedi and clone just made me want to vomit on every page. And don't even get me started on the betrayal of the Jedi code, or randomly Mandos being suddenly extremely skilled with lightsabers...

Secrets of the Jedi, The Approaching Storm, Rogue Planet (if not counting it as part of NJO), and Shatterpoint have all been good reads.

I'm about halfway through it and am enjoying getting to know the new characters. Writing is solid. Feels like Star Wars.

All-time faves are the Thrawn Trilogy and also love the Daley Han Solo books. They were fantastic when they came out because there was very little written Star Wars available at the time (just those, Splinter, the Lando books and the Marvel comics). So they filled a nice void.

I tried to think of any book that's as good as any of the books in the Thrawn Trilogy...... but I couldn't do it.

I thought "Sacrifice" from the LotF was pretty good though. The death of one of my favorite characters should have turned me off from it, but it was a must to see another one of my favs take a big step in his storyline.

I think Republic Commando is going to come up a lot in discussions. The series started good, but it deteriorated as Traviss got too immersed in her world. This was why I didn't like Etain in particular. She seemed to be Traviss' avatar, exploring a new world in wide-eyed wonder, and never really growing up. It's probably why she jumped onto a saber in the end - she wasn't cut out for the wars or for 66.

As for the best book, I can't remember. I keep trying to get back into reading Star Wars, but I haven't found much good enough yet. This thread should be helpful. At least it's not as hard as finding a good (or not-terrible) Star Trek novel.

Uh-huh. She was cut out for the wars. She was a frikkin general!

The one where Ganner Rhysode stands against the Vong, alone, against their thousands and holds them.

*teary eyed and goosebumps* SOOOOO AWESOME!!!!!!

I would guess that's what your sig is about?

I enjoyed the Darth Bane Trilogy quite a bit.

I, Jedi is my favorite, with Traitor being a close second. I also will heap the love onto the Revenge of the Sith novelization. I found it a tremendous read, and multiple times saying out loud, "why didn't they just include this ONE scene into the movie! It would have been infinitely better!"

I enjoyed the Thrawn books, but not on the level that others do. I think there is some nostalgia that plays into peoples love of those series, since they came out at a time where there were no books, and launched the whole IP into a new era. What I loved most about it was that it fit into my notion of what the "Clone Wars" were (which is, clones of Jedi and the Senate infiltrating the upper echelons of power and corrupting it from within, with people being distrusting and not knowing who is real and who is a clone).

I really enjoyed the 'Infinities' comic series. Fun to see how things might have played out if Luke missed the exhaust port, or if Luke died on Hoth and Han thinks the message to see yoda was for him.

I love the Thrawn trilogy but it isn't my favorite. I gotta go with the Republic Commando series.
