Xwing in Osaka Japan?

By Krynn007, in X-Wing

Been considering moving from Canada to Osaka Japan.

I currently live in the east coast of Canada, born and raised, but I wonder is xwing popular in Japan?

I've been there a few times and been to stores that sell a lot of magic and Pokémon cards.

Just wondering if anyone knows of had played in the Osaka area of Japan?

There is a decent sized group of gamers in Osaka. We play a variety of board and card games. There's also a handful of people that seem to play X-Wing at just about every one of our monthly game days.

If you want to find out more, check out our Facebook group. It's called JIGG Kansai.

Really?

Sweet!!

There is also a Kansai: X-wing group on Facebook.

Be careful when you go to 'hobby' stores in Japan. A majority of them define 'hobby' as 'a very limited selection of card based games'.

I live in Nagoya (only about 50 mins by shinkansen from Osaka). There is virtually no X-Wing scene here. Having said that, I'm more of a casual gamer, so not one to hunt down competitions and tourneys.

Finally, if you are considering a move here. DO IT! Japan is an amazing place. I've been here 4 years and I still love it! Also been to Canada a handful of times (my wife is from SK) and apart from your ridiculous winter and an unnatural love for the Saskatchewan Roughriders .. it's not too bad either .. eh?

I have been playing a lot of Pandemic lately, so when I saw Osaka Japan I couldn't help but picture a pile of cubes and a need to spend actions to treat disease. ^_^

I live in Missoula Montana and if I can find a group of players here, I am sure you can find one in Osaka. You could also be the one who imports the love!

Actually, Kansai: X-Wing is primarily just a subset of JIGG: Kansai. There are a few members who aren't in both groups of course. Just like our Kansai: Game of Thrones and Kansai: Netrunner groups.

Ahh cool. Thanks for letting me know. I joined the groups with the hope of getting to Osaka for a game or two, meet some good folk, etc. from what I have seen, it looks like you have a great little community there.

Just so you know the Green Dice are just as bad west of the Pacific Ocean. 私は緑のサイコロを憎む

I'm always looking for games in Kansai!

Well, we meet the first Sunday of every month at a community center in Namba for gaming from 9:30am to 9:30pm. There are usually between 20 and 30 people there. Of course, people come and go throughout the day. During Golden Week, we do a 3-day gaming weekend, which usually has about 40 to 45 people.

There are also a lot of smaller meets during the month to play specific games.

Oh, and we have JIGG groups in other parts of Japan as well. The Tokyo group is pretty large as well I think. And Nagoya and Kyoto are decent sized (though most of the Kyoto people are also in the Osaka group).

If you are interested, just check out our Facebook group for meetings and whatnot. We have a guild on Boardgamegeek, but it's not used as much as the Facebook group.

Congratulations, for both news, your moving to Osaka, and discover the group of players, and for the community, cheers, keep doing tournaments and having fun, greettings.

And if you ever come up in Tokyo, we play X-wing at least once a week. :D

Finally around here Japanese gamers are also getting interested. We are thinking about a local tournament, if we could find someone to sponsor it officially.

My wife is from there and we can have our own house. Sell mine here, and move.

Just waiting on my job so maybe a year or two.

Doesn't hurt to look into it now.

My wife is from Sayama city (think I spelled that correctly) just outside Osaka

I always go downtown ( not too far from the giant crab on the building) to the geek area when I'm there and buy vintage star wars and transformers, or the masterpiece series.

Crap...if I were still living in Shiga I would have considered this!!

How long have you guys been around? I was there 7 years ago and had no one to play 40k with...the wife and I have considered moving back (most likely to the Kyoto area if we did.) I'll have to keep this in mind.

I've been here for 8 years... Nagoya has a big war game scene 40k included.

You picked your wife well my friend. Nothing wrong with loving the only pro sports team in the whole province! If Japan doesn't work out, there's a decently active group in Saskatoon I play with.

Hey -40 makes you tough, who doesn't want that??

Never been to Nagoya...think my mother in law is from there though...either way...good to see there is a gaming expat community...that was one of the things making me think twice

I am in Osaka for a few days. Is there a place to buy ships and are they in Japanese? Are there any unique Star Wars items I can buy for gifts?

Thanks

Not unique ships here - they aren't in japanese, there are unique star wars items about - check denden town and yodobashi camera's toy area - you won't find X-wing outside of some imports in the denden town area. Yellow Submarine doesn't carry it sadly.

I'm setting up a tournament with prize support for sometime mid may - depending on when the groups are free - check us out at kansai: x-wing on facebook... I'm not a store - took some doing to get enough things for prizes together.

Bandai has some new SW plastic models. Can prob get them back home but they retail for about $16 here.

The stormtrooper is superb.

Is that little shop in Osu still rocking?

Selling all my GW gear on ebay soon. If you or anyone in your group is interested in marines or nids, let me know. You can have it all super cheap.

Don't know - I'm near Kyoto and not Nagoya - if you join the Wargamers in Japan facebook group, someone there may jump on it - im not a 40K guy.

Don't know if we can or not. Picked up some as a gift. How I can get them in my luggage. Might be in trouble.

Thanks for all the information.
