TC tournament: how to pick a 2nd list (or "showing my hand" :)

By Parakitor, in X-Wing

Okay. Last Team Covenant tournament I had a really hard time with the double list deal. Before the match you reveal which of the two lists you'll be using, but I ended up just using my primary list the whole time. I want to be a little more tactical this time around. Here's the starting point of my primary list, 100 points.

Captain Kagi — Lambda-Class Shuttle 27 (Sensor Jammer 4, Tactician 2, Ysanne Isard 4)

Carnor Jax — TIE Interceptor 26 (Push the Limit 3, Shield Upgrade 4)

Delta Squadron Pilot — TIE Defender 30

Something like that. I haven't settled on the details, especially that third ship. I really want a TIE defender, but I also really want Carnor to be protected by Hull + Shield upgrades.

But that's not the main part of this topic. The main question is, "What Imperial list should I take for my second squad?" I can't figure out what this list is weak to, perhaps because it's weak to everything. But I should really bring something to cover for lists that this one is afraid of. My knee-jerk reaction is

7x Black Squadron Pilot

Any help is appreciated. You guys are awesome!

Your first list seems highly Phantom susceptible. Only 3 ships, max PS of 8, low maneuverability on two of them. I'll let you build your own list, but I'd make sure my second list could handle a Phantom list.

A side note: Kagi seems too well protected to me. I'm not sure what your flight plan is, so maybe I'm missing it, but it seems to me like you have a ship that is built to LAST, but doesn't work if it is your LAST SHIP. I'd much rather see him be more offensive up front when he is most likely to get good shots, or just retool that ship entirely. I think you are presuming people will target Kagi to break your "action preventing fortress", and you are trying to maintain that. But I think the end result is that people might be psyched into taking unmodified shots at Carnor/Defender rather than a TL'd shot against Sensor jammer, evade token and a defense die.

Good advice. I just really like the idea of Isard on a shuttle, and I've had some decent success with Kagi + Sensor Jammer paired with Carnor Jax.

I'll see what I can do about TIE phantoms with my second list.

Also think about PS bid as an alternative, with one squad at higher PS like this one, and another at PS 1/2, to get more point efficiency.

This is all theorycrafting, as I don't have the time to play in the upcoming tournament, unfortunately.

Thanks for posting this, I didn't know there was a new TC tourny so soon.

What about 4 OSP ties and 4 AP ties? That way you still have the APs for blocking, and it lets you fit in one more tie.

Man, I have no idea what to run. I have so little experience with wave 4 as is, and now I have to consider wave 5 and rebel aces, with less than two weeks to decide. It's a little overwhelming.

My mistake with squad choices in the GC was A) not testing squad 2 enough, B) making last minute changes to the one that had worked well in a lot of matches, C) the two lists were too similar. I think going for two very different list, designed to accomplish different tasks, with different PS bids is a really important factor.

I want to try the Defender, but I'm not crazy about tie fighters, and I've got no feel for the shuttle, so my options are pretty limited.

Yeah, your list looks good in theory, but probably takes some fantastic flying to pull off.

I'd look at it this way:

Your primary list should be good against X and Y, but not Z.

So your secondary should be good against Z.

Honestly, I don't think your list is that good for the theory-crafting, average forumgoer, but if you can make it work then sure. I would expect it might be okay vs Fat Han, not so good vs Phantoms, and not so good vs swarms.

So, you'd probably want a list that could deal with those: Phantoms and Swarms. Geez. That's not an easy one.
