Well you get enough upgrade cards to do two ships so you could buy normal a and b-wings now plus aces and have four fully upgraded ships.

Double post?

Buy the Aces and one each of the standard versions, that way you'll have all the pilots. The Aces comes with doubles of each ship specific card (like the a-wing title, b-wing title, and Chardaan Refit) so you can equip one on each ship.

The same goes for Imperial Aces, if you get that you'll still want a standard pack too.

what they said. however, if you wont buy both, wait for aces.

If you need/want all the pilots, you should buy one Aces pack and at least one each of the "normal" expansion packs.

Buy everything. Problem solved.

What do you need?

Ships, lots and lots of ships.

[insert witty image from the Matrix with the guns replaces by blister packs - unfortunately not enough time at work today to photoshop that]

As a good starter, I would say either 2 core sets and a Rebel and an Imperial expansion pack,

- or

a single core set and 2 Rebel and 2 Imperial expansion packs.

With the expansions packs I say go with counter-parts as in the faction equivalent of each other. Such as:

  • A-wing and Tie Interceptor
  • B-wing and Tie Defender
  • Y-wing and Tie Bomber
  • If you are feeling like spending a little more money then Millennium Falcon and Slave 1
  • Or if you can find it Imperial Aces and when it comes out Rebel Aces.

After that simply build your squadron from there. There is a good android app called X-wing companion which lists all cards by type and also list the set they come from. In addition it also lists sets and packs so you can see what each pack has to in order to figure out what you need before you choose to buy a pack.

Buy everything. Problem solved.

Not a good suggestion for starters, eventually collectors will want to get one of each but keep in mind that the hobby has developed so trying to buy every ship at once is for one expensive and two overwhelming in options. If you give a new player the entire collection he or she will be confused in how to build their squadron. There will be many mistakes such as putting upgrades on cards that cannot have them (i.e. EPT upgrade on Roark Garnet). Also they would not know how each ship works. You need to learn to crawl before you can run.
