Measuring firing arcs

By player1823837, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi!

As we play with relatively strict tournament rules (or at least try to) a situation came up regarding measuring firing arcs before combat phase to determine whether or not a ship can fire on another one. This situation only applies to those cases where you cannot with certainty say if the defending ship is inside the firing arc. So...

1) determine whether or not a ship is inside the firing arc and take appropriate actions to make the situation better (i.e. Barrel roll)

Or

2) live in doubt until combat phase and then measure

How would you handle this situation in a tournament environment? Did I miss a rule somewhere? We are basically fine either way but would like to know if there is a correct way to handle this. Sorry if I was somehow unclear. I'll try to explain it better if this is the case :)

You can't premeasure fire arcs until it's that ship's turn to fire in the combat phase.

You can usually see if you are in arc or not, but using the range ruler or measuring range is definitely not allowed until you activate that ship in the combat phase. The FAQ has a comprehensive section on competitive play. All you need to know can usually be found there.

Thanks! We assumed we aren't allowed to check the firing arcs before combat as knowing it exactly gives a rather nice advantage. Usually you can see if you are in arc but we've run quite a few times into a situation where it wasn't all that obvious. Range measuring is of course prohibited but we usually use a laser level to check to arcs which doesn't help in measuring distances but gives an advantage in determining actions.

Thanks again! :)

So just take your time eyeballing it. Get in a good positon so you can just look down you're ships arc and that can help you figure it out.
