Newbie Lists

By ThatJakeGuy, in X-Wing

I've recently introduced my girlfriend to X-Wing, and I'm looking for good, simple 100 point lists for us to practice with. We've played the requisite Rookie vs 2x Academy game as well as an A/X vs Int/Adv game. I'll also use good suggestions when I teach my other friends how to play.

Here are the parameters:

-100 points

-Not super technical or too many options (no Phantoms or TIE Swarms, please!)

-I'd like to stick to Rebel vs Imperial games for now because flavor

-She liked the A-Wing, so bonus points to lists that run A-Wing or Interceptors

-My collection is listed in my signature, so please stick to those ships

Any help is appreciated, and I look forward to seeing what you guys can come up with!

When I started showing friends, another player told me that he often teaches using the named pilots everyone knows. It's pretty easy to play Luke and Biggs up against Vader when that 'feels' right for Star Wars. If that make sense for you, your girlfriend and the friends you play, then it should be hard to come up with lists that play well for you.

You have 2 Xs, 1 Y, 1A, 1B, and 1 Falcon - there's only so many lists you can really come up with from that. You can run XXYB, XXAB, XXA, XXB, YBF, XXF, XBF - I hope you get the point.

With the imperials, list making is typically more challenging because you don't have a lot of options. Running 4 ties with a phantom is pretty great right now. You can also run 3 intys, or the Lamda with Ties, or the Firespray with Ties. You don't need to worry so much about the powerhouse lists because you only have so many ships to work with.

Anyway, this long ramble should point out that you have all that you need in front of you. Spend a couple hours on the UK Squad Builder site and you should have lists to play with for weeks.

I definitely could do it for myself, but I like to see the forumites' creativity in action in these kinds of "build-a-list" threads, since the Holonet can see all the angles I might be missing

you could always go with a simple swarms that don't need to be flown together and you get the feel of all the different ships:

Rebel

Rookie Pilot

Rookie Pilot

Blue Squadron Pilot

Gold Squadron Pilot

Prototype Pilot

as for the imperials

Alpha Squadron

Alpha Sqaudron

Alpha Squadron

Tempest squadron Pilot

Academy Pilot

Academy Pilot

Although it doesn't meet your point requirement a potential into game can be done with something I believe was called the Secret Force:

Rebels:

Chewbacca + Gunner + 3 points in additional upgrades

Imperials:

Three TIE Fighters - exact choices could be up to you but Howlrunner and Backstabber can teach valuable lessens.

These are only 50 point squadrons but the idea is that letting a newbie use Chewbacca with Gunner is a legal way to simplify many things. Suffering crits isn't an issue, Gunner means you'll feel like you're doing something, and the Falcon means you can take some hits while also not needing to worry about a bad maneuver on your part ruining you shooting chances.

Admittedly, some people HATE any suggestion at letting a beginner use the Falcon because of all of those simplifications. Once one gets a few games under the belt you can switch to harder to fly ships but ideally you have the hook set by that time.

Assault on the Death Star II:

Lando Calrissian (44)
Expert Handling (2)
Nien Nunb (1)
Gunner (5)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Daredevil (3)
Rookie Pilot (21)
R2 Astromech (1)
Total: 100
Not too many technical hijinks but some nice interactions.
Concerning your squints, did you take three single packs or do you own Imperial Aces as well?

There's also a bunch of other threads (of course) so have a look around :P.
