Faction Core Sets

By atkrull, in X-Wing

Hi guys, this thread is mostly directed towards Frank and Alex but I would like to know what the community thinks about this crazy idea.

I am currently starting an FLGS in my hometown and have been trying to figure out how to get new people into X wing. The subject came up on where will X wing go after Wave 6 breaks. Personally my bank account is struggling to keep up with all the new ships they are putting out but I am smiling from ear to ear every time they swipe my credit card when purchasing my new babies :)

But my friend asked me what would I like to see down the pipline and I thought about it for a little bit and then it hit me, Faction Core Sets.

X wing has grown into a huge community but the game is still young. Someone today looking to get into it could be turned away from the massive price tag placed on acquiring enough ships to make even 1 competative squad. This is where I thought ( especially with the new faction coming out) that having a Core set with only Rebel, Imperial, or Scum ships would help ease someone into the addiction that we all know as X wing :)

If you like Rebels, your Faction Core set would include a Falcon, X wing, and a B wing. Complete with all the cards of each individual expansion pack but all in one package! Along with templates, dice, astroids, damage deck, range ruler, and rulebook.

For Imperials maybe an Interceptor, Lambda, and a Bomber or TIE Fighter.

Scum and Villany would usher in a great way for someone to pick up the Firespray, Hawk 290, and maybe the Hutt Interceptor?

As someone who owns 2-3 of each ship I probably would still buy a core set of each ( especially if they had faction templates and dice included!) mainly because I would have to, but I would think for a new player this would be a great buy to instantly have a number of squad options to play with in one package. Just food for thought, love what you guys are doing!

p.s. Alex I need you to sign one of my pilot cards next year at gen con, already have James and Frank's, can't wait til next year's Gen Con, doubt I can make it to worlds, having a baby boy soon.

And sadly my wife will not let me name him Turr :(

I would not mind as long as they don't come with new cards. It would suck to have to buy 3 starter just tor some cards. I am an OCD completisionist. It sucks.

It would be cool for reprints of cards found in the other factions. Like predator in the rebels, outmaneuver in the imperials, etc etc.

I genuinely agree that this is a brilliant Idea, and to be honest the the Most wanted pack is more or less exactly that for the new faction.

The thing I would say though is that your assertion that the game has a "massive price tag placed on acquiring enough ships to make even 1 competitive squad" is quite a bit off the mark.

In a vacuum $100-$150 is a good chunk of change, but this pales in comparison to other tabletop miniatures games where the buy in price can be well in excess of 5 times as much.

It feels like faction specific starters would be good, however technically the core set is a "board game" and as such you should be able to play a game between 2 people with what comes in the core set all by itself.

I could see the releasing "Full Squadron packs" at some point but they would be expensive, something in the vicinity of $60 for an XXBB Squad etc

Not likely to happen. The Core is the starter set, the thing to give you a taste of the game. It is designed for 2 players. A single faction "starter" goes against their philosophy.

Now, I wouldn't be surprised to see more big boxes similar to Most Wanted for the other factions.

I agree. $50 dollars (less online) for 2 people to play a game is a great deal and an easy sell. From there you only need a few ties or an xwing and bwing to build up something decent to fly at 100 points.

Most Wanted, Rebel Aces, and a future Imperial Aces 2 with 2 different ships (even imperial aces to a lesser extent) work well as faction "kits"

Here's the thing about Most Wanted, is that I heard a reference to it as a "big box" expansion. And that description fits. Now, for those unfamiliar with FFG's LCGs, a big box expansion is different type of expansion. Generally released in-between cycles. They tend to be a revitalization of the faction that is represented.

Now the difference Most Wanted has over the Aces packs, is that Most Wanted has more stuff for ships not represented. Sure, it is for the conversion of ships to the new faction, but apply that to the existing factions. Take a theoretical "Pride of the Empire" pack, with an Advanced and 2 TIE Fighters. Throw in some more Bomber pilots and upgrades. Perhaps more Defender pilots as well. Now, the impact will be far greater than an Aces pack.

While in essence, Most Wanted may seem like a Fringe starter, because it in part introduces the Scum faction, and help them get up to a similar amount of ship types available, it is more of a true expansion of the faction. I want to see them do similar big boxes for Imperials and Rebels. Much more efficient than spaced out Aces packs.

200% this Sithborg.

To be honest I like the core set the way it is with 2 factions instead of one. After you pick up 2 and say maybe a booster pack for each side you have enough ships upgrades and tokens for 2 players to play the game and it is fairly balanced.

As for the 3rd faction I don't think it is a good idea to let someone new to the game start by grabbing that faction. Sure it has as many models as the core set but you still don't have enough for a squadron. The Most Wanted pack was specifically made for players with already a substantial collection as in at least one of each ship (excluding the epic packs). Hence why it comes with a HWK dial a Firespray Dial and an additional Y-wing dial. So those that already have a Y-wing, a HWK-290, and a Slave 1 expansion pack can enjoy the Most Wanted pack thoroughly.
