Organizing an East Coast Mega-tourney

juts curious but does the cafe give any food for $300?

$15 is okay, but when you add it to travel costs it would be nice to get some food w/ it too. Not a deal breaker though.

No food included, but I hear you. I expected that the $300 isn't negotiable, but I'll see if maybe they'll give some "store credit" to each person. It's midtown Manhattan, so nothing's too cheap, unfortunately.

The parking garage across the street opens at 7am and closes at 2am, so folks parking there won't have to worry about getting out early (the parking garage across from Neutral Ground used to close at 6pm on Saturdays, that was always a pain).

This is going to be Standard, correct?

Furthermore, there's been a lot of question concerning which exact decks are dominant in the relatively unknown AGOT environment, largely because there has been no "multi-meta" LCG tournament yet.

I think it's about time we on the East Coast organize exactly such a tournament.

If you'd like, get the word out to some of the old timers who don't frequent the boards anymore but might be willing to play in an LCG tourney.

I'd say it was inteded to be LCG.

I don't know if that is settled yet though. I know the DC guys like Standard better (as do I). but if theri goal is to test for genCon they may go LCG. Persoanlly though, I'd ratehr play with access to iron Throne blcok.

FSQ? Twn2dn?

Yeah, we were thinking LCG because that's just what the format will be for any OP going forward. For as much as I'd love to spend a day creaming random decks with my freshly remodled version of Stark Kill, the whole DC crew would prefer LCG as preparation for GenCon (that and, only one of the four of us has enough ITE and 5KE to build decks out of).

I have no problem with paying an entry fee of $15-20 so long as we get to sit around and play all day.

Erick

That takes a lot fo the luster out of this event for me.

Quite being a whining, backward-looking ninny and suck it up. :P Erick and I will also bring Standard decks to make you happy you're playing LCG.

Given the logic of GenCon prep which originally suggested the kernel of this event, before we relocated to NYC to accomdate/maximize attendance, I suggest we keep it LCG... even if I have yet to build a deck for that format.

If consensus says standard (and I'm perfectly happy with, just think it's not being Obama-esque enough if it's embracing of "change" and "recognition of realities") I will happily front/wheedle/borrow/obtain the necessary ITE/5KE block cards to let the DC powers dominate, if Shai Hulud judge them worthy.

my vote's for LCG. I don't see the point of traveling to play a format that is not supported. I understand the want to play standard (even if i have 0 standard decks) but you guys can do that on your own meet up days.Plus, If we want to entice the new guys from down here, they only have LCG decks.

Supported? We would be the ones coming up with the prize support for this thing. Supported? Like FFg has "supported" OP for the past six months. Ha.

Nate even said in the OP article that FFg would "support" tournaments in whatever format made the most sense for each local playgroup - so Standard is as valid as the next thing. Its just not going to GenCon.

But you're right - everyone can play what they like. I prefer standard becuase after trying both, I remain convinced that LCG is not balanced and i don't like the tollbox limitations. For the sake of seeing some old friends, i'll probably still come. But my enthusiasm is greatly diminished and I rpomise that the NY numbers will drop as a result of this. I guarantee our Martell player stays home, and porbably our Bara player as well.

It is what it is though. Since it was intended as GenCon prep - I guess it makes sense for you guys to run it in the more limited format. I'm just not happy about it, and i won't pass up the opporunity to discuss why i think the Standard environment provides a more satisfying gaming experience.

Go back and re-read the Re-Organizing Play article: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=540&epn=0

FFG will be doing their best to support whatever the players want to do... now, choosing how best to accodate both groups... (looking forward _and_ back) is the hard part.

And on a personal note Mike, I'm not ignoring your PM, I've jsut been dwarfed by the pile of correspondence I know have to handle via typing. I'll get back too you soon.

Agreed. That is the hard part.

And i do understand why the pHilly and DC guys might wnat to do this as LCG. They are goign to genCon afetr all. i'm just saying - its not to my taste. But given the chance to see soem firends i haven't seen in a while, I'll probably make the trip in anyway. still - given the choice, i'd rather play Standard on a saturday night than devote a whole day to the lmited format.

Just saying.

Any idea of allowing the equivilent resources for those brave enough to try greyjoy.

If this is gencon prep... and Kings of the Sea is legal at that point, Greyjoy should be represented.

Granted... I think w/o the unique characters it would be an uphill battle anyhow. And for all we know summer might mean released at/or around Gencon.

the DC meta has tried vanilla greyjoy and greyjoy winter assuming the basic resources -- results: greyjoy incapable of beating anything but the stark deck, and even then only occasionally

Really? We've done LCG Greyjoy not giving an inch (no assumption of basic resources) and they seemed to do rather well. Stood up admirably to everything with a win record over 50%.

They might give a kit for a standard event, but they are not hosting or working with any standard events or cards in mind. I think its just best to move away from it in official events (~I pull band-aids off as fast as i can too).

No biggie. like i said in the pm choose to ignore it if you wish.

eh----the gencon prep argument losses a lot of steam for me because you have little to no clue what will be in there unique or not so your not really prepping for anything. If you want to play GJ right now go ahead (with how they exist in the LCG) to me thats more brave. ~obviously there is no downside at all to playing them right now.....Since the community wants to wait for the expansion to see what i happens i say the whole community has to suffer through that decision.

Finite, I was just about to say ~obviously you don't build decks as good as ktom ;P.

I think the problem is... they only have access to 6 cards to provide resources... maybe 9 if you make a summer deck. I still hold to my puritanical roots and do not build a deck without a minimum of 15 resource locations. I actually have not decided on what I'm building yet... I think the next chapter pack will help me there... But, maybe that is why Ktom's record is different than expected. I lack the skill to play a Card game without significant gold and influence at my disposal.

I didn't post the question to beg welfare for the krakens. I just felt it was a valid question, and one that should be gotten out of the way at all due haste.

Btw, how important is it to people that this event is officially recognized by FFG? I'm completely ignorant to what significance, if any, winning a regional has for someone heading to Gencon.

Here are hurdles to getting recognized that I see: first, the link to the regional application is broken --ok, that's not a real hurdle, I figured out the problem with the link and was able create the correct URL. happy.gif The application it was due 8 weeks before the event date and needed to be signed by the store owner (I believe with the assumption that it was being held at a game shop). Also, there's potentially the obligatory kit cost of $160 (at least it did for last year's Black Friday, although I didn't see a kit mentioned on the Community page, so maybe that has changed?), and I already expect to come up short on the venue cost and I don't want to ask folks, especially those going through the hassle/cost of traveling, to have to pay any more than the $15 already being discussed.

e-mail nate or the person that was mentioned in the op article and see what they say about it.

My fiscal situation has changed slightly (see FB for explanation), and $15 suddenly seems onerous, if we're not getting anything but the space. Is there a library anywhere nearby that might have a meeting room available? Though sadly I would have to use a flask for my Jaegermeister :/ ... or do we have an AGOT community relief fund I can apply too? ~My presence surely has to count as stimulus-package-worthy, right?

whats FB?

Well if your #16 at the tourney i think we can get everyone eles to chip up a buck for ya. ~It might be a hard sell, but its worth a try.

I'd cover you in a heart beat if i had a more regular job (or knew i was getting one of the many that i've applied to).

FFG recognition or sanctioning seems meaningless right now, we should skip out on that

I'll absolutely chip in Luke - no worries, you will be covered.

~Wow - we;re not being recognized or scnctioned, but we are still playing the Limited Card Game format? Pass the kool-aid , please.

(Last snotty comment on the format - i promise. I just really like standard better).

lets see what FFG has to say baout it before we dismiss it entirely.

If its $160 or more then say $30 (double op kit) i say we don't need it.

It is $160. The published information is:

"Regional applicants should be prepared to order a Regional Kit (costing $160.00 + shipping) if their Regional application is approved. These kits will include prizes for the winners, as well as promotional material and swag to assist in running the event. Tournament Organizers may charge a fee for Regional participants to offset this cost.

The complete break-down of these kits are:
* 16x A Game of Thrones-themed playing cards
* 1x 2008-2009 Regional Joust Champion Crystal House Card
* 1x 2008-2009 Regional Melee Champion Crystal House Card
* 30x Regional Champion poker chip-style power counters
* 1x 2008-2009 Regional banner
* 4x Art Prints"

That's out of this article.

So we're totally NOT doing that, right?
