Organizing an East Coast Mega-tourney

By finitesquarewell, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Ktom, thanks for finding that. That's the kit we had for Black Friday and while the banner was nice, more playing card decks and poker chips aren't that exciting since many folks already have them or will be getting them from OP kits and the "crystal" house cards were, frankly, very poor quality compared to the old stone and crystal house cards. (Thankfully Stag, out of his own pocket, kindly supplied some nice trophies for the joust and melee champs.)

Good news re the space: I talked to the owner some more and he agreed to knock the charge down to $200, so I'll instead only ask people to pony up $10 (btw, if by some miracle more than 20 folks show I'll happily kick back pro rata any surplus money collected). I did tell him that folks would generally be buying food and drinks during the day rather then leaving to do their eating elsewhere --which I sincerely believe since I expect people will want to maximize their game play and breaks between rounds will be short. So, please do consider having a meal or two and/or snacks/drinks there at the cafe and, for the love of GRRM, do not bring in outside food. We'll have the room from about 9am until about 11pm that evening, so you'll have reason to load up on carbs and fluids. happy.gif Thanks.

I'll glladly spend at least $5 on food there (~thats what a bottle of water?) and most likely more.

as for the regionals kit, well that trhing sucks for $160. It almost sucks for $30. i'd still shoot an e-mail to FFG as they tend to like and help out w/ these big gatherings. And if they don't, well it was only an e-mail...

Already sent.

outstanding getting that deal and putting this together for the east coast community -- i look forward very, very much to coming up, and will gladly eat at the restaurant (which sounds ridiculously convenient).

The food is actaually pretty cheap for a New York eatery. You can get a decent sandwich on a roll for five and change and they have a tone of specials. there is a full salad bar, a grill and plenty of good cold cut sandwiches. Its actaully a pretty reasonable place.

So I'm trying to ballpark what attendance might look like and this is what I got:

finite...

Lars

Twn2dn

Staglord + ~3 LI players

bloodycelt (+ any MA players?)

Maester LUke -- if the cover charge is the only reason keeping someone away, just put that out of your mind. Anyone who may have difficulty with the charge should just send me an email/PM and it'll be taken care of.

~5 NYC players (including me, GreyjoyChris, and *maybe* Sithlord)

thebraz? (conditional on LUke's attendance?)

The following have been on this thread but look unlikely given the date or venue: longclaw, orclrob, DarthJeff

I'll try to get a head count of our guys tonight.

at least me, probably 2, maybe 3, as many as 6

I cannot confirm any other MA players, other than that Ethan is NOT going.

I'll be hopping on a bus the early morn of Saturday... so I hope ya'll* wait for me if I'm late due to whatever. But from times past it seems that I usaully manage to make it between 10 and noon.

(I'll call if I am running late, so long as someone emails me with a contact number).

* not pronounced yall, but more like a ya <stop> all... it's a rhode island thing.

Do you know about Jon C.? Has he, too, completely walked away from the game?

add one to the head count, another DC player will be coming up with near certainty. it's almost probable that we'll have at least one more beyond that, and less probable for yet another.

orclrob: if you want to make the trip up with the DC crew (the logistics of which we'll be figuring out shortly) we'd definitely like to have you along, and you could fly back out sunday morning

concerning format, how about 6 games swiss? an after-swiss bracket seems unnecessary when no real title is being handed out, and 6 games as opposed to 5 both gives everyone a chance to get their money's worth and more definitely crowns a winner.

also, the DC meta will have "standard" decks along for side games

Something I was wondering about "Standard".

Which cards are banned from Standard? Is it all that's banned in legacy and LCG?

The cards in question:

Gathering Storm

Pyromancer's Cache

J'aqen H'gar

... the last "standard" match I had was at Black Friday. (IIRC).

of those 3 only jagen in joust and melee and tgs in melee

I will almost certainly be able to be there. I will have to fly home the next day, but no worries.

Also, again, I offer my apt up to anyone who needs a free place to stay. I have one inflatable twin mattress, so unless you're ok sleeping on the floor, I can probably only host one person. If you do want to sleep on the floor, i do have plenty of blankets to throw down to make it a bit more comfortable. I like at 110st on the east side, so easy access to all of the city and cranberry cafe.

Just email me at [email protected] if you want, or post here and I'm sure Jason will inform me if anyone replies, since I don't always check this everyday. Very excited about the event, hope to see everyone there!

I would say six rounds of Swiss is for sure the way to go. If we aren't playing for prizes or seeds at genCon or anything - there isn't any need for a cut round. This way everyone gets multiple games in and we don't have to configure soem sideshow event for those who miss the cut.

Make sure you contatc sithlord and LGR with whatever name you want to use so we can get these results into the rankings system we have set up on the NY web site.

we will be having 4 show up with a possible 5th we could have 2 more if it was the 11th, but oh well.

I'm interested in coming down from New Haven if you'd be accomodating towards someone who is close to a total newbie. I know one other person in New Haven who plays (Bananapants on these forums). No idea if he'd be interested or available, though I emailed him the link to this thread. Most of this thread has been spent sorting through all the logistical details and it now seems like at this point a (mostly) clear plan has been chosen. Maybe either the opening post should be edited or a new thread started with all the important details right up front in case any other potential players happen to visit the forums? They' d probably be more likely to get hooked if they saw "Tournament in Manhattan on July 18" rather than a discussion about a tournament some time in July somewhere between DC and Boston.

the AGOT community is very accomodating to new players attending tournaments, worry not. as to your suggestion to start a new thread with firm details, it's a good one -- let's collect the details we have and post them in a new thread

Yes, new players should not be shy about attending. In fact, there's a fellow who just started playing with the NYC group and probably has less than a half-dozen games under his belt that I hope will be there.

The forum puts a very short time limit on editing, so it's not possible to have a thread's initial post updated with the latest. So, I'm gathering all of the latest info on the Events & Activities page that the NYC meta maintains and will update it with new info as it becomes settled.

I encourage folks to look there: www.agotny.net

Hey, anyone in Boston, I just moved up here about 8 months ago. I used to play AGOT in the old days quite a lot, then quit due to moving to Pittsburgh just as their scene bit the dust. I'd like to start up again, though, especially with what I consider to be the awesomest play-field equalizer (the fact that it's the LCG format).

Where do we play in Boston? And are we going to the biggun? I'd love to go, if I can get the time off from my wife and from work.

Kyle

There is no current meta in Boston anymore.

But it's rather easy for me to get to pandemonium if I'm informed ahead of time (just email me). Occasionaly we play at battlegrounds (board games usually).

I'm quite certain that if you can go to the tourney in NYC it would be worth the trip.

As for the big one... well, I have a project due on Sept 1st, so 1.) I have to see if I can get the time off. 2.) I have to see if it is in my budget. If I can I will go to gencon. We all should coordinate if we can go.
