This has been an interesting thread to me. I saw this game when it first came out but opted not to get into it (to my regret now) in part because my son was too young to get into it and I knew if it was around he would want to play it. I was alway put off a little by the fact I knew I'd feel compelled to get lots of various ships and I could picture my wife getting a bit huffy about spending so much per tiny ship (she balks at the idea of paying €25 on a copy of King of Tokyo - she basically thinks everything costs too much).

That said I've finally caved and I'm planning to order the base game tomorrow after I failed to find an English copy in Hamburg today though it will take 5-10 days for it to arrive. (I found a German copy, but I don't feel my German is good enough to have a German copy - maybe if I buy two base games I could get one German and one English).

Are there ships that are now impossible to find from the earlier waves? Aka ships I should snap up if I happen to find them?

You could always point out a mistress would cost alot more :D

2 Y-wings, not 1, Y-wings are THE bomb. A-wings and E-wings are pretty boss to.

I could but then she'd point out that I already collect (some) comics, limited edition soundtracks and Talisman expansions :)

What are you doing here? Go out and play some more X-wing. :P (I would but I'm sick with Bronchitis and I am sure others would rather have me not share it with them <_< )

Where most collectors start out with 2 of each and unless there is a ship you like allot I wouldn't go crazy and buy a full squadron of them. I do know of one B-wing player but only buying one ship does restrict you on options. I suggested he should put some flechet torpedoes with his Ion cannons his reply is he didn't wanted to buy a transport which I told him they cam in the E-wing pack as well. His answer "I guess I have a reason to buy a Wave 4 ship". If you keep a variety you will find yourself with allot of flexibility and more options in your squadron list.

I usually have suggestions for first purchases but since you already have your own squadron I would refer you to the X-wing Companion app for android devices. It lists where each upgrade and pilot card comes from and what is in each pack so you could figure out what you need to buy before you pick it up.

Falcons are an easy ship to learn with Rebel players because of the 360 turret primary weapon. The only thing is that your total firepower will go down as your ship count also goes down.

Another core set is a good purchase...when you are ready to step up to a third X-wing and also want to increase your number of Ties.

That doesn't mean every new player should go out and immediately buy 2 core sets. I think a new player with 1 core set should pick out 2 more rebel ships (any) and then purchase imperial aces.

As far as flying rebels, once you get your Falcon you will find it a lot easier, that's a great ship. For a new player, the X-wing is a solid ship. Luke + R2-D2 is a solid choice. Wedge and a few alternate X-wing pilots from the single Xwing package are also very good. The E-wing is a VERY potent ship.

Ok I loved...I mean LOVED Wedge with R2 unit, Photon Torpedos! This combo was nice. I was able to rip up a Phantom and a Tie defender in 2 different games. His pilot ability to reduce agility by 1 is nice. The only issue I had was remembering to use his pilot ability :)

I can't get an A-Wing to save my life everywhere I have looked A-Wing's are sold out or out of stock. I was about to get 2x Y-wings on order though.

You can buy them both in German and then go to the following link

Rules in english

I had to explain my addictions to my wife too. I work for a living so I support my own addiction all the while paying bills and what not. Plus if anything you can buy 1 or 2 ships 20 bucks or so if you shop around.

On the subject of doubles: I'd defer on those until you know what you like. Get one of each expansion, fly it, and then decide what you like and identify what you want from there. The exception is the Core set, because the extra dice, cards and templates come in handy.

The only things I've doubled on were the B-Wing, Z95 and TIE Fighter Expansion. I've started considering a second Lambda, but I have enough variety to put out a number of fun and competitive builds. If I were to be honest, I probably could have gone without any Bombers. I rarely play the one I have, as Backstabber is my go-to filler when I bump something from 12 to 16 points.

While i personally like to fly small ships in pairs for the 'look' of it, i totally agree with the above. Much better things to buy early on then bombers

Phantom start considering doubling on Y-wings. :D :D We all know how boss Y-wings are (I hope).

EDIT: I don't double on things because I have an even more limited budget than most, I'm working on getting everything before doubling, + some things I don't need to double because they come in packs (Reb aces, Transport, Imp aces)

Ebay

I've never found *anything* to be out of stock if you search on ebay, only stuff thats not out yet :)

Here you go, instantly found one if you live in the UK

Surely US ebay has even more wargames stores?

Ok I found an A-wing or 2 on ebay but the cost is 3 times more than what I am willing to pay. The shipping from the UK kills it. I took a look at Amazon 1 A-Wing w/ Prime is 27 bucks not counting shipping. I have a hard time justifying the cost of a single unit when I can buy 3 units for that cost.

Right now the A-wing isn't a must have on my list. Honsetly I'd rather put 30 bucks toward Wave 6 or the new VT-49 Decimator.

Thank you for the suggestion though.

When it comes to ship numbers I'll normally suggest just 1 copy of most expansions to go along with two core sets. This may leave you short of actual upgrade cards for some builds but at least lets you know what's available and to gets your feet wet. When it come to getting multiples there are only a few expansions I'd plan on multiples from the start: Z-95 (best start with 2 but an easy ship to fly 3-4 of), TIE Bombers (here I say you can generally skip the first one if you like and think 2-3 is actually the number to own if you're going to use it at all.) I know B-Wings are a popular Rebel option so owning multiples can help but one expansion and one from RAces when it comes out may be "enough."

Just so you know Scum & Villiany HWK, Y-wing and Z95 pilots can't be used for the Rebels, and the Firespray pilots can't be used for the Empire.

It's even worse than that. Apparently the dials that come with those ships can't be used if you fly the models with a Rebel squadron even when you have "extra" Rebel pilots and base cards.
