Determination/Draw Their Fire Question

By Spike IT, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I looked for an answer to this in the FAQ and the forums, but couldn't fine an answer for this. Sorry if it has been asked before.

Situation:

I have 2 ships at range 1 of each other, one with Determination and one with Draw Their Fire EPTS. The ship with Determination receives a crit. I know I look at the damage card and if it has the Pilot trait, I can just discard it without resolving its effect.

Can I now choose to let the ship with Draw Their Fire suffer the uncancelled crit, or does that decision need to be made before the damage card is flipped up?

(I guess that is a general question about using Draw Their Fire - can the damage card be looked at before determining which ship suffers the crit - the original target or the one with Draw Their Fire on it?)

Thanks.

No, the crit is assigned before the damage card is drawn. If you decide to pass it on using DTF, this gives you a chance to use shields on the DTF ship to cancel the crit. If it still remains uncancelled, then you draw a damage card. If you had drawn a card for the ship with Determination, you've missed the chance to use DTF.

DTF moves the uncancelled die result to a different ship. After that the ship suffers damage. At that time, you check if that ship has a shield. If it does, you do not draw a damage card at all. If it does not, you draw a damage card, triggering determination.

So no, you you cannot look at the card before using DTF.

What they've all said.

You decide if you want to use DtF loooooong before you know if Determination could discard a card.

While it will be possible to put both on an A-Wing doing so will be a big risk. You'd use DtF before you have any idea what card you would draw and while you could get lucky and suffer a crit that will deal you a pilot card you can discard with Determination that scenario is unlikely.
