Ships touching

By mrkyle, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hey folks. I recently read in a thread that if you perform a maneuver that causes you to overlap multiple ships you do hit both then follow your template backwards until you no longer overlap. Two questions with that said.

1. If the Decimator that causes damage when ramming does what's mentioned, would every ship he "hit"take damage?

2. If his maneuver had him overlapping three enemy ships, but after moving backwards on his template and comes to a stop only touching one ship, can he then shoot either of the two that he's no longer overlapping, or no?

I'm very curious to see the written rules, so if you can cite them or the pages I'd appreciate it

I assume you are referring to Capt Oicunn here. Every ship you are touching takes damage. If you overlap three ships and then move back to finish touching just one, then that's the only one that takes the damage. And you are free to shoot at the either of other two.

All relevant rules are on page 17 of the rulebook. And Capt Oicunn's card says "touching" so the final position of the resolved overlap is the only thing that counts here.

1. No, only the last ship in contact with the decimator is considered 'touching' it, and so, it is the only one that takes ramming damage. However, note that it this posible to end 'touching' 2+ ships if they are perfectly aligned with your base. Players can agree that two or more ships are considered to be flying perfectly aligned in formation, which would allow to touch more than one ship, for this specific example purposes.

Rulebook page 19 - Overlapping other ships

FAQ page 4 - Touching multiple ships.

2. Any ship is free to fire to any other ship if their bases aren't touching. Only your final placement matters to determine who are you touching or not. The other 2 ships are valid targets because the decimater overlapped them, but their bases are not in contact.

Rulebook page 10 - Declare Targets

Summarizing, in order for 2 ships to be considered 'touching', they must:

- Overlap each other first.

- Have both bases in contact after resolving the overlap.

If any of those conditions fails at any moment, those ships are no longer considered 'touching'.

For example, If you equip Captain Oicun with the Dauntless title and the 'Expert handling' pilot upgrade you can do the following:

Overlap a ship, ending in contact with it (touch) and causing 1 damage to it, then, perform the 'expert handling > barrell roll' action after the maneuver to 'detach' from it (bases no longer in contact), then, fire in the combat phase at the target, (since you are considered no longer touching it).

When trying to overlap an opponents ship I would like to point out that a barrel roll and boost won't allow you to end up touching a ship to activate Oicun's ability because "touching" is a result of overlapping another ship, and Barrel Roll and Boost don't allow an overlap when performing them. See page 8 bottom of page.

However, daredevil does allow for an overlap, you would just need an engine upgrade to avoid the extra damage.

Thanks for the posts. All was asi thought, not sure where I read what I read
