I thought up an interesting idea for a Gozanti TIE transport:
Docking: durring the Placement phase, you may asign up to 4 of small ships to the gozanti. While docked, ships remain off the board.
Deploy Action: Durring the gozanti's perform action step you can place these fighters within range 1 of the Gozanti's base, then the fighters perform their maneuvers and actions.
(This means in 1 turn you could move a group of Tie fighters up to 15 base lengths, if both they and the gozanti move their maximum distance that turn. It also means that they move durring the huge ships activation phase, which might be interesting)
Docked fighters are protected by it's shields, but if the shields are down, they can be targeted as a section of the huge ship. If the Gozanti is destroyed with docked fighter, they are destroyed as well.
Edited by Radarman5I'm sure Gozanti is too small to be a huge ship.
That fabulous model you pictured notwithstanding, I'm pretty confident* that they're going to assume a larger understanding of the Gozanti than the measurement that we've seen on the Wookiee (incl. the 'Canon' side of the Wookiee). They might just call it something else to cover themselves from the nerd rage.
Has any one tried to get an estimate of the size of the thing by looking at the screen captures?
* I was also pretty confident that they were going to announce it at GenCon, so take my confidence with however many grains of salt you feel is appropriate.
Regarding the original question, I think it would be okay to introduce a carrier that doesn't have any in-game carrier functions. Then again, it might be interesting to have it in such a way that its deflector shields cover the fighters until they are released (in formation), into combat wherever the carrier is located on the board.

I am doing something close to this myself. I plan to have my SCUM ACs deploy small ships at move one from the Huge Ship Base, then the small ships act as normal. The deploying action is the ACs action for that round.
Huge Ship or Large Ship, If it's a "Carrier" it should be an "Energy-Based" ship.
Not saying it should be Teeth-less maybe a single Hardpoint per section. Bit it's main role should be CIC for its fighter wing.
A carier that works by deploying ships would be an interesting way to bring ties into battle.
Rearming/repairing of ships would take way too long to function in a dogfight timeframe where a carrier is involved and would be impractical and a little far fetched if it was introduced.
But if you got a repair like droid upgrade that could repair your ship in flight, we already have precedence for that.

You must have missed the 40 something pages of Imperial Huge discussion ![]()
well here's droids next to one for scale, I kinda think it may have actually been 40 something meters long in the prequels but it sure didn't stay that way in the Clone Wars. I wish i could find screen grabs of the fight on top of a Black Sun one from one of the Darth Maul returns / Mandalore civil war arc.
Edit: WOW I actually found the concept art drawing for the Clone Wars Gozanti, click on it to see it full size. Look at the Tiny person next to it for scale, that is a BIG ship.
Another Edit: Since the LAAT is in the illustration for size reference and we know it's 17.4m long I can work out that the Gozanti is 93.7m long, 37.4m wide at the engines and 28.7 at the middle flat part. 4m wide at the nose which flairs out to 18.3m at the widest with those bits poking out the sides.
More maths: at 1/400 scale it'd be 23.4cm long at 1/450 20.8cm
Who said anything about rearming? I'm just talking about launching.
Launching from a Gozanti wouldn't make any sense, though. The TIE fighters are just hanging off the bottom of the ship; why can't I shoot them?
I like the idea, but I don't think we will see this in this game
at best it will have support abilities or will be able to purchase academy ties similar to bombs, and drop them in the same way

This is similar to how I was picturing the Gozanti working! I t starts with its fighters docked, moves into the fight and deploys four Ties in the opponents face!

Or the deployment could be both the carrier and fighter Action for that turn!

Shields.
I thought ship shields generally hug pretty close to the hull. I don't remember lasers ever splashing further out on a 'bubble' shield in the movies.
I think I'd only support carrier play if it worked similar to deep strike rules in 40K, like pick a Gazebo carrier option and it deep strikes turn 2/3 away from an astroid and ties launch from the middle facing any direction.
Otherwise considering that a 100 point game is about 30 seconds of real-time action, no one is redocking squat, missile video or not.
I do not think we'll see rules for Carriers in X-Wing for general play. You might see rules for a special scenario but that would be it. Any half way competent captain would have already launched whatever fighters he had before entering engagement range which, in X-Wing, is the 3' x 3' playing surface.

I have some special rules that allow my ACs to pop right out of warp and deploy immediately, that is why the small ships stay with it until the launch. it is no big deal it is just a way to get an advanced deployment action, but I like it.
Who cares about carrier play, we could have a Defiant rule process in the making!!
All these ideas are great guys! Keep it up ![]()
Edit: wow how did I get a double post?

I believe he meant plot shields.

Hate those things it makes my storm troopers miss.
I'd like to see carriers allow for restocking of torpedoes/missiles, or such.
This has been proposed multiple times, but makes NO SENSE in the context of an ongoing dogfight. I really hope FFG do not go down this route.
Edit: wow how did I get a double post?
It does that once in a while...
