Is there any Rules differences from version 1 to 2

By Manchine, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I am just starting to play again. I have the convertion pack on its way to me. I am going to be in charge of it again and I wanted to know is there any differences that I need to know about, in the rules?

plenty you should read again the rule book

I have version 1 rulebook. I don't have version 2 rule book yet. Looks up which I said.... thank you for your unhelpful addition to the thread.

The game has pretty much been reworked. Yes there are a bunch of rule changes. Too many to list. You can easily find a pdf of all the rule books though.

Looking for the PDF right now.

Let me know if you have trouble finding one?

If you are talking about 1st and 2nd edition then its a whole new game. If you mean the updated version of the rules for 2nd edition, then there isn't that much, just some clarifications and some errata. All the downloadable pdfs can be found here:

good luck!

It is unclear from your initial post whether you or not you have purchased the 2nd Edition core box. It sounds like you might have just ordered the Conversion Kit and assumed that would upgrade your 1st Edition box set to 2nd Edition rules. This is not the case.

- The dice are completely different

- The cards are completely different

- The stats are completely different

- The campaign mechanics and quests are completely different

The Conversion Kit does not "upgrade" your first edition game to second edition.

The Conversion Kit does give you 2nd Edition stat sheets for your first edition figures . It increases the number of heroes and monsters you can use with the 2nd Edition core box, assuming you already have the old figures from 1st Edition. You still need the 2nd Edition core box to play second edition.

In fact, the 1st Edition quests are completely incompatible with 2nd Edition rules, as originally designed.

Under 1st Edition rules, the Overlord's objective was to kill the heroes repeatedly until they ran out of Conquest Tokens. In 2nd Edition there is no Conquest, and heroes can stand up indefinitely until the OL completes his scenario objectives, or the heroes complete theirs. In 2nd Edition, the whole map is revealed from the start, there are no rules for revealing Areas one at a time.

So you can't even convert the old quests to use them under new rules. Not without completely rewriting them from scratch, anyway. (Or reintroducing the bulk of the 1st Edition rules as homebrew that were taken out to "streamline" things, so that those quests can work as written, which is what we did for a while when 2E first launched.)

BOOM! Legendary Play Variant Rules to the rescue.

Play ALL First Edition quests under the Second Edition rules, play randomized quests, and much, much more!

As steve-O sees, you got all wrong

So, in one word : No !

Conversion kit ONLY allows minis from D1 to be used in D2. That's all.

So only monster cards and hero sheets. If you want to play D2, you need at least the base box.

Well I will cancel my order then. They just lost one person that was going to start playing again.

Descent second edition is entirely a different game than first edition, it's not an update to first edition.

try it somewhere, or at least try the base.

I'm sure no one cares if you play or not. You are the one missing out. 2nd edition is far superior.

Oh, burn!

I don't want to sound like I'm ganging up on Manchine here, as it seems like he made simple mistake (and he wouldn't be the first to think it, either.) However, I must admit that one was well played. =P
