Help deciding on a tournament list for Saturday.

By UniJustin, in X-Wing

Hello All,

I have a local tournament I will be attending tomorrow Saturday 08/30 and was hoping for some input on the two lists I am debating taking. Here they are:

Roark Garnet (19)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
Tactician (2)
-26
Blue Squadron Pilot (22)
Advanced Sensors (3)
-25
Blue Squadron Pilot (22)
Advanced Sensors (3)
-25
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
-12
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
-12
-100-
OR
Han Solo (46)
Predator (3)
Gunner (5)
Millenium Falcon (1)
Engine Upgrade (4)
-59
Tala Squadron Pilot (13)
-13
Tala Squadron Pilot (13)
-13
Tala Squadron Pilot (13)
-13
-98-
The first I feel has the potential to perform very well against Han Solo lists, but I fear may struggle against Phantoms/Predator heavy lists. The second, obviously will perform well against Phantoms (unless they go for a 3 point initiative bid), but unfortunately I don't have much time behind the stick of the YT-1300. Besides, with all the hate on Solo these days, I don't want to seem like a jerk.
Let me know what you all think.

Where's the tourney?

The fine city of Portland Oregon.

The second is a very popular (and quite boring in my opinion) list right now.

The first is pretty similar to my old "blue garnet dagger" but with the current meta and ships.

I used to run:

Roark + recon + blaster

Dagger

Blue

Rookie

A few pts left for upgrades

I like your updated list. I'd probably run:

Roark+ion

Tarn+R7

Bandit x2

The problem I see is tactician is nice when it happens with Ion but can you get enough range 2 in arc shots to make it work? I don't think so. But that means you can take an advanced sensors Dagger squadron and that's just good fun.

Love Portland. Wish it wasn't 3+ hours away now (time is not that bad but it's a pretty terrible drive). Is it at Gaurdian? What time? Maybe I can make it.

It's actually at Time Vault Games between SW Jefferson and SW Madison at 2pm.

I know Tactician is limited, but it's so, so sweet when you connect with that Range 2 Ion Cannon...

I debated dropping it for a Dagger, but I like being able to move the rank and file ships in any order I choose, then zap one to PS12 for combat.

I actually used to use:

Biggs Darklighter (25)

-25

Roark Garnet (19)

Ion Cannon Turret (5)

-24

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Advanced Sensors (3)

-25

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Advanced Sensors (3)

-25

-99-

After Wave 4 I felt that two warm bodies was better than the one Biggs provided and allowed me to fly a bit looser.

Are you up in Seattle?

Remember not only is it range limited but arc limited. Meaning for a hwk, after its first pass, it will be hard to line up something purposely at range 2 in its arc. Not a fan of Biggs but I like the last list the most, either run it like that or swap Biggs out for 2 talas.

I usually fly the HWK so as to maximize my broadside shots, keeping my vector at 90 degrees to my opponent. So I agree that Tactician isn't a great choice, although I have no idea what else the OP should do with those 2 points in that list. Talas instead of Bandits?

I live in Seattle Before Portland. Now I'm down on the central Oregon coast.

Up bandits to talas or a blue to dagger. Could also FCS a blue and then get an Ion missile on one of the bandits. Would probably mess with target priority.

Basically, would help lower the chance of getting predator rerolls and help the Zs get some shots out before they themselves are destroyed. Unless every one is running elite lists, then that PS bid is wasted. Roark is actually pretty amazing at helping cull the phantom threat so I really think the list is solid.

I like your first list. I recently did pretty well at a local tourney using a similar squad.

Rakky, are you anywhere near Corvallis, OR? If so, we have events going on here every couple of weeks and two or three game nights every week.

Isn't Han+Predator+Gunner a bit overkill?

Yeah; I'm aware of the arc limitation on Tactician. I've found in test games i can usually get two shots that trigger it if Roark survives past the first pass. It is really a matter of what to do with the remaining two points. Initiative doesn't really matter in such a low PS build. Boosting the Bandits to Talas, or one Blue to a Dagger is a good idea.

It's really designed to just smooth your attack rolls to the point that you can almost guarantee hitting something.

Corvallis I can do! PM me details!

Last time I looked around I couldn't find anything there. Glad to hear it picked up

As long as you don't (because you can't) bring that d*mn Dash Rendar... :P

I really think you should try a few un-upgraded HWKs. They're great value for the points!

I wish I could fly Dash Rendar tomorrow. I think I'm in love...

And something tells me that that un-upgraded HWK comment may be an attempt at sabotage Mr. Mikael...

Hey--I'll see you there!

I'm debating between a few different two-ship lists, myself...

If someone would loan me 6 hwks I'd totally rock it for funzies. My only other requirement is no one else can fly ships with more than 2 agility.

Again? Grrr. That Phantom + Fettigator was my undoing at Red Castle a few months back. But I'm prepared for you now.

...unless you fly something else, of course.

Oh, surely I wouldn't try such an underhanded ploy. That would be nefarious.

And if I were nefarious, I would insist on being Dr. Mikael. Proper villains have doctorates after all.

I look forward to killing you, soon!

That sounds like something from Ask a Ninja.

Now if you want to earn villain points, can I suggest that you boast about how you're planning to do so. ;)

The store posted to the FB event page for the tournament that they have something like one of every ship released so far, and they'll be able to load out some of these on Saturday if someone doesn't quite have what they need for their list...

(Although I have a PRETTY good hunch that they don't have 6x HWKs...and also, I think we are probably going to see ships with more than '2' agility!)

I'll lend anyone my HWK if that's what they want to play. ;)

In the first list... I feel like you could remove the 6pts of adv sensors and 2pt tactician for 8 free points. If you can fly better, you can make up for the lack of adv sens. Tactician only works in the forward arc, and the HWK might have a hard time making use of that.

Wish I had some advice for how to make it better vs Phantoms. Maybe go up to a high PS B with VI? Or keep adv sen but add intel agent to hwk? Id even consider taking one adv sen off and putting another Intel Agent on a B if you can get the B/E mod.
