Well I play tested Rookie pilot with R2 D2 and they DESTROYED the TIES.

The core set doesn't include 2 Tie and a X-Wing because they are perfectly balanced, although it can be somewhat achieve with the correct setup. It includes those two ships because they are the most iconics and are the one most people expect when speaking about Star Wars.
