The Twilight Witch (help requested)

By Suija2, in UFS Deck Building

Hey everybody,

I've loved Zhao Daiyu ever since I first saw the image that would become her promo character. Well, long story short, when I first looked at her and her stuff I was sadened cuz I didn't think that it would work. Well I've heard that she has actually been doing well, though I haven't seen any deck lists for her, but despite this I got reved up to make and play a Zhao Daiyu deck. However I am still hesitant as to how it will do, so I want to get some oppinions on my build of her.

Starter:
Zhao Daiyu**

Attacks:
4x 6/3 Twilight Embrace
4x 2/3 +3M Two Deadly Ring Techniques
4x 5/3 Lao Xie's Grinning Death
4x 4/2 +2H Melancholic Mercurious

Actions:
4x 3/5 +1L Rejection
4x 2/5 +1M Kung-Fu Training
3x 4/4 Ritual Magic

Foundations:
4x 2/4 The Twilight Witch
4x 2/5 Forbidden Lore
3x 3/4 +2M Bitter Rivals
4x 4/6 +1M Chester's Backing
4x 2/5 +0H The Ways of Punishment
4x 1/6 +3H The Glare from the Abyss
4x 1(4)/5 +3M The Anti K'
3x 2/5 +1L Oral Dead
3x 2/5 +3M The Red Lotus of the Sun

The deck is really self explanatory.I try to burn and remove your stuff when possible. I just feel that there could be more done with her. I wish that there was more stuff to either remove my opponent's stuff from the game or stuff that she could use to put stuff into my opponent's card pool. If anyone has any suggestions, then I am all ears. I would really like to try and make this work.

Quite frankly, I think Chaos is your best bet when it comes to Zhao Daiyu

the deck looks as good as it can be for Evil. Perhaps consider Billiard Player.

Also, the deck is missing assets. Get some Olcadan's =)

I did a pretty extensive search...

Orange Gi and Begin Anew are the only cards in her symbols (not from her set) that support her "remove opponent's cards from game" theme.

Neither is easy to get, but they do both support her nicely, and are relatively solid in their own right.

Demon's Scourge (Basara) also supports her theme, but only if you're sure you'll be able to remove lotsa their cards on your turn.

To MarcoPulleaux
Well if you feel that chaos is more suited for her...

Starter:
Zhao Daiyu**

Attacks:
4x 6/3 Twilight Embrace
4x 2/3 +3M Two Deadly Ring Techniques
4x 5/3 Lao Xie's Grinning Death
4x 6/2 +2M 125 Rapids of Rage

Actions:
4x 0/6 +0L Olcadon's Mentoring
3x 4/4 Ritual Magic

Foundations:
4x 2/4 The Twilight Witch
4x 2/5 Forbidden Lore
4x 2/5 Her Own Agenda
4x 2/5 +3M The King of Fighters 2006
4x 1/5 +2H N-Type Human
4x 1/5 +3M Adopted
4x 3/5 +1L Tira's Contract
3x 1(4)/5 +3M The Anti K'
3x 2/5 +1L Oral Dead
3x 2/5 +3M The Red Lotus of the Sun

When I was kicking around the evil deck idea I also put together a chaos build of her as well cuz I couldn't choose between the two of them. Though I can't believe that I forgot to put the owl in there, and I'll go ahead and say that I don't own any copies of forethought. Let me know what you guys think of this one and how it compared to the evil version of the deck. Also I did try to put together a death deck but, I really don't think that will be going anywhere.

To Armed Pirate:
I don't think that orange gi is very useable but I might be more open about begin anew though it is an 8 diff and a 3 CC so it would have to take the place of one of my other attacks. Furthermore the thing that I don't like about it is that she will only burn them for 2 when I go to play it which kinda makes it a waste but the killing all foundations may be useful. Any suggestions on where to put them?

Thanks for your help guys please keep them comming!!

I think the evil version would be better but the only attack I would use is her ultra. Among others for consideration, wonderworld comics, invoking the ancients, take ritual magic out and put in demon scourge(better stats and really not that much different in effect), and mabye seals. Her attack will be fine on it's own you really dont need to combo E with it since it's regular enhance will do just fine especially with kung fu/ ways to push it through.

Dude, if Olcadan's Mentoring WERE an action, it'd be so much more balanced :)

Eh, well, I haven't even finished my Zhao Daiyu, and I'm the biggest hater of Chaos around, so I don't know what to suggest other than upping your Oral and Red Lotus to 4, and getting 3-4 The Bigger They Are...

draw is simply too important, especially for a 6/25 such as Zhao.

i would suggest taking out the melancholics altogether you dont really have momentum gen and its a 2cc idd add in low dash or her own low attack(cant remember the name that way red lotus or anything doesnt affect your enhances)

Also look into adding billard players they help so much when getting out chesters or bitter rivals when you need and also im running gorgeous team and rejection in mine its something else you could look into

Hey everybody,

Here is an updated version of the deck after I did some play testing with it on Sun.

Starter:
Zhao Daiyu**

Attacks:
4x 6/3 Twilight Embrace
4x 2/3 +3M Two Deadly Ring Techniques
4x 5/3 Lao Xie's Grinning Death
3x 4/2 +2H Melancholic Mercurious

Actions:
3x 3/5 +1L Rejection
3x 2/5 +1M Kung-Fu Training
3x 4/4 Ritual Magic

Foundations:
3x 2/4 The Twilight Witch
3x 2/5 Forbidden Lore
4x 3/4 +2M Bitter Rivals
4x 4/6 +1M Chester's Backing
4x 2/5 +0H The Ways of Punishment
4x 1/6 +3H The Glare from the Abyss
4x 1(4)/5 +3M The Anti K'
3x 2/5 +3M The Red Lotus of the Sun

This is the deck that I ended up choosing to run. After running the decks up against a good Sigfried with his symbol giving to dmg pumping tricks I found that out of the 8 matches that we played the chaos deck went 0-4 while the evil deck went 4-0. Furthermore, we tried the evil deck up against his Algol and came out with similar results. The things that I noticed with the chaos build where that it required too many pieces out to run effectively, could not push through dmg/effects without over extending myself, and lastly the deck just did not flow together properly. I found that Ritual Magic is great for boosting the number of cards that are removed for resulting burn. I was able to make TDRT go for 6-10 dmg by itself and make TE go off for 11-15 dmg. Meloncholic is there to also act as an alternate win condition if need be and while I know that I don't have any momentum generation if I can push through just two atks then I've got the momentum needed but I don't rely on the card often, which is why there are only three in the deck. I know that the deck still needs to be tested further. Thank you all for your comments, and please keep them coming.

4 Glare and 4 Ways is redundant.

You only need 1 copy of each to deplete your opponent's entire hand, so running 4 is not just redundant, but it your opponent's Owls get a giant avian grin on their face. I'd cut them down to maybe 3 Ways, 2 Glare.

I have to question this kind of statement b/c while yes having 4 is redundant and yes the owls get a giant grin on their face until they realize that by running a bunch of the same cards they see that all the owl can give me is the same "redundant" stuff that he is trying to get rid of. Furthermore I am running 4 glares which have a 1/6 in a symbol that is lacking in good 6cc. I do thank you though for the advise

I would have to politely disagree with shinji on the running 4 of those as they are the best way to push your attacks through. If you had BRT's then i would say not to run full sets but since you do not then 4 of each is good to go.

Well everyone I have retrofitted the deck. I can't remember the guy who made 2nd place at a tourny with ZD but this takes a lot of points from his deck. I've also put my own spin on it too.

Starting Character:
*Zhao Daiyu*

Assets:
3x Seal of Cessation 3/3 +2L

Action:
4x Kung-Fu Training 2/5 +1M

Attacks:
4x Twilight Embrace 6/3
3x Sazan 3/3 +1H

Split Cards:
4x The Anti K' 1(4)/5 +3M
3x Clean Freak 2(3)/3 +2L

Foundations:
4x Blood Runs True 2/5 +1H
4x The Ways of Punishment 2/5 +0H
3x The Glare from the Abyss 1/6 +3M
4x Billiard Player 3/5
3x Oral Dead 2/5 +1L
4x The Red Lotus of the Sun 2/5 +3L
3x Kabuki Artist 2/4
4x Body of Souls 2/5
3x Mentally Unstable 3/4
4x The King of Fighters 2006 2/5 +3M
3x Darkhunter of the Night 3/5 +3L

Side:
4x Evil Plans 2(3)/5 +2M
3x Tsuji Hayate 5/3 +3M
1x Seal of Cessation 3/3

Ok the main point of this deck should be fairly obvious. I'm trying loop and push through the Embraces to eat your staging area. I use Clean Freak instead of Hayate for a couple of reasons. Firstly I can snipe all kinds of foundations rather than just R foundation. Additionally I can hit commited foundations on either turn. Lastly I can use the attack to loop with Mentally Unstable, though this is dependant on the number of cards in my hand. The three main problems with this is that it itself has low atk, I have to eat a foundation to do it's effect and my opponent gets a momentum while I just loose a foundation. Granted I think that it is worth it. I am always looking for ways to improove on the deck. Any suggestions that you can give would be appreciated. Thanks!

another cool combo in my zhao deck i do is run mentally unstable, nefarious deeds and her attack. you also run as much card draw as possible such as counter the assault and the bigger they are.

also a huge part of this deck is tenacious. you keep recycling her attack as much as possible then at the end of the turn tenacious it back up.

Yeah I'm thinking of switching Kung-Fu training with Nefarious Deads. In the few practice matches that I did I found that Kung-Fu and Darkhunter didn't do a whole heck of a lot. I've already traded out the Darkhunters for Powerful Styles for much easier spamability, but I'm on the fence about Kung-Fu. I mean it stops action action cards like those Willfulls that I hear that people are running. Granted if I use Nefarious then I can get extra uses out of ZD and BRTs that I have out which may be more useful in the long run. I've also been thinking that it may be a good idea to put in a pair of Tenacious just in case Embrace gets blocked so that I don't have to worry about losing it. I think that I may yank 1 Body of Souls and 1 Mentally Unstable for 2 Tenacious. My only problem with using The Bigger They Are... is that ZD is 5'6" so she will only get to draw 2 only every now and again. Granted it is a reliable draw 1, but I'm not sure what to replace with it. Any suggestions?

drawing one is never bad lol, i mean two is better obviously. but one is still good as crap for just a commit. what has helped you least in playtesting? that's what i'd take out.

Well of all the cards that were in the deck I would say that either The Glare from the Abyss or the newly put in Powerful Style. The only other card world be Kung-Fu Training but I think that I will trade that for a Nefarious Deeds and see what that does for me. The only reason that I hesitate on either is for the same reason that I put them in, nice cheap diff and high CC spamable foundations. Basically I'm either trading a 1/6 (which is one of the few evil foundations) a 0/5 (with a free life gain ability) for a 2/4. So which do you think that I should do? Or do you think that I should flip a coin on them try it and then try it the other way to see how it works?

tenacious is a 2/5 with a plus one mid block. it's a sexy party. i'd drop glare. honestly you don't need discard in this deck. you just nom up their staging area and be done with it.

Actually I had already planed to throw in 2 tenacious in place of 1 mentally unstable, and 1 body of souls. What I was talking about was The Bigger they are.. but I will try it instead of Glare from the Abyss and let you know.

jsut in case you didn't know mate olcadan's mentoring and rejection are now banned. i'd suggest looking to find a way to make your deck a bit more aggresive that way your opponents will get overwhelmed before they can setup. i try doing that myself with my decks just make sure you have a bit of draw power on hand in case of emergencies (i.e if kill turn fails and you have no cards in your hand)

Actually mate I am well aware of that fact. The main thing that I couldn't figure out was how to do was to edit the original post. However once I found out how to do that I got a little lazy about doing it cuz I can't just copy and paste the new info into my edit box. The above quote is the most current version of the deck that I have now. Though if I can put my hands on certain cards then I will be more than happy to further update the build some more. That said, I actually have little trouble keeping a hand and worrying about my opponent's attacks. The reason being that I don't normally go in for a "kill turn" (unless my opponent has overextended himself and I know that I can pull it off) rather I try to keep my opponent from building too many foundations so that I can keep the effectivness of BRT and ZD as high as possible as long as possible. I do this by playing Twilight Embrace over the course of several turns, while only accationally using Mentally Unstable to play it an extra time or two, so that I can continuously eat away both their staging area and vit. Remember the point of the deck is not to go all beatstick agro on an opponent but to control what and how many foundations the opponent has on the board at a given time. However it is capable of going somewhat agro when need be (provided that I have the cards out for it), but I don't normally do that just cuz like you said I want to have a hand if my opponent drops a bomb on me.
