A few noob Questions

By erccmmo, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

ok im sure this is basic basic stuff but i gotta ask anyway...

do renown characters gain power from unapposed challenges?

Where Can I find a list that describes ALL traits?

How can I determine if a character or location is "unique" or not?

Im assuming its possible to have several different NON unique locations in play and exert EACH of them to reduce character costs etc...

anyway these are the questions ive come up with JUST from reading the rulebook... Im sure I'll have more once the game is shipped to me...

thanks for your patience in advance guys!

sure, they participated in a challenge in which they won...why wouldn't they?

Wow, not sure if one exists....there are a lot (so many different houses have been used, etc.)

there is a flag icon in front of the name (this should also be in the rule book. in fact its on page 4. #3 under card anatomy key).

yup, just like a non-unique character, you can have up to 3 in play and they each provide their own text box (i.e. 3 Aegon's gardens provide +1 godl per location for a total of +3).

As far as I know, no one has bothered to compile a list of ALL the traits. This is because traits are meaningless on their own. By themselves, a character with the Knight trait isn't any different from a card with the Ally trait or Dragon trait. A location with the King's Landing trait doesn't have any special powers when compared to a location with the Stronghold or Winterfell trait. So I doubt that anyone has bothered to create such a list because it would be, ultimately just a list of words. Traits only have meaning when a card effect specifically refers to them. So for a trait to mean anything, you need a card that says something like "all Knight characters you control get +2 STR while attacking" or "choose and stand a Dragon character."

In that sense, a list that described ALL traits would essentially be a complete spoiler list of all the cards that have been printed. For a good start at that, check out tzumainn's site .

Now, just to be certain, lets make sure you aren't making a very common mistake and confusing "traits" with "keywords." Traits are the words in bold-face italic type in the top center of the text box, right under the picture. Keywords are in normal type and are usually the first words of actual text on a card (assuming they have keywords). While traits have no meaning in and of themselves and rely on other cards and effects to make them mean anything, keywords do grant the card specific "powers" as described in the rules documents.

So while "traits" are things like Knight, Dragon, Condition, House Tully , etc., "keywords" are things like Stealth. Deadly. Renown. Limited. No Attachments. Stalwart., etc. The Core Set rule book is pretty comprehensive on all keywords. In fact, I can't think of any that aren't listed on p. 21-22 in the Core Set rules off the top of my head.

yes sorry... I was thinking of keywords rather than traits...

I was just hoping to see a list of them so someone doesnt play a new one in a game and be like BAM!!! INSTA DEATH!

but if the only ones you can think of are in the rulebook then I'm good to go!

thanks guys! you have been a great help!

Careful there, no characters without a specific ability gains power from an unopposed challenge. You get 1 power from each an unopposed challenge no matter how many characters participate, whether they have renown or not. Now your characters with renown will gain a power every time they particpate in a challenge you win, as attackers or as defenders, your opponent opposing or not opposing has nothing to do with it, as long as you win.

I suspect Lars answered your actual question, but the wording was confused and I don't want others to read this and get the wrong idea about renown and unopposed.

lol ok now you confused me...

is an unapposed challenge considered a win?

for instance if I attack with two renown characters and my oppenent declares unapposed Do i gain 3 power? 2 for each character and then another for the unapposed? or just the 1 for the unapposed?

- The attacker gets 1 bonus power for his or her House if a challenge is unopposed.

- Any/All participating characters with the Renown keyword controlled by the winner of the challenge claim 1 power each after claim (if any) is settled. Renown only cares if you win the challenge; whether the challenge was opposed or not (or won as an attacker or defender) doesn't enter into consideration.

So yes, if you attack with 2 characters that have Renown and your opponent does not declare defenders, you will end up with 3 extra power; 1 for the unopposed "bonus" and 2 (1 on each character) for winning a challenge with characters that have Renown. Just note that the two methods of getting extra power, "unopposed" and "Renown," have nothing to do with each other (other than the fact that you have to win the challenge).
