Just purchased. A couple of questions...

By refinery, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi everyone. I just added a copy of Descent into my collection and reading through the manual and FAQ I came across a few confusing points in regards to glyphs and the town. I have tried searching the forums but I am either not familiar with it yet or the search function is very limited since I have achieved no sucess. I hope that someone can help me out.

When a hero dies and is respawned in town, on his following turn does he still have to spend 3 movement points to shop and another movement point to travel back into the dungeon? Do you only get to shop with no movement points spent at the start of the game?

The FAQ mentions that the heroes can rest in town. How?

The manual gave me the impression that all that was required to travel back to town was being on or adjecent to an active glyph and 1 movement point to use it. So could you for example advance next to an active glyph, attack a target and then use the remainder of your movement points to activate the glyph and travel back to town and/or shop if you had enough movement? The below quoted section of FAQ seems to state otherwise and is confusing me in this regard. It also seems to allow shopping without spending 3 movement points. Is this perhaps a special case example applicable to one of the expansions only?

Q: Can a hero traveling to town via a glyph take any action before Restocking, such as attacking? Does returning from town still cost 1 MP? What other limits are placed on heroes in town and using glyphs?
A: A hero who begins his turn adjacent to or on top of an activated glyph has two options: take a normal turn or go to town. If he goes to town, he is immediately moved to the building of his choice and gets to Restock there. No movement points, no declared action – he just Restocks.
A hero who begins his turn in town has two options: Restock again (at the same or a different building) or return to the dungeon. If he returns to the dungeon, he declares a normal action (Battle, Ready, Advance, Run) and then must spend a movement point to move from town to the dungeon, just like normal. If he somehow can't do so (i.e. he Battled and had no fatigue left) then the entire action is canceled and the hero Restocks instead.

Can you trade items in town for 1 movement point each? The manual states that you need to spend 3 movement points to shop in town but the below quoted section of FAQ seems so state that you get no movement points when shoping and hence can't trade items. Could anyone clarify this a bit better for me please?

Q: Can heroes purchase gear from the market and then distribute it as they see fit? What if they’re in the middle of a quest; does this cost MP?
A: Heroes in town are still considered to be adjacent to one another, regardless of what building they are in. However, a hero who is Restocking has no movement points to spend (and may not spend fatigue for extra movement points, since he’s not taking a normal turn). A hero who has visited the market on a previous turn and is returning to the dungeon may, for 1 MP, give an item to another hero in town.

Thank you.

That's cause the search function is horrible.

He doesn't have to shop if he doesn't want to, but as far I know if he wants to shop he must spend 3 MPs and then could use a remaining one to move back into the dungeon. Of course, once there the hero could spend fatigue to gain more movement points. Since the shopping at the beginning actually occurs before the game even really begins, you don't need to spend movement points.

The FAQ mentions that the heroes can rest in town. How?

Just do a Ready Action, and declare a Rest action.

The FAQ entry is referencing Road to Legend which has different rules regarding town and glyphs. Yes, as far as remember you can do what you put in the example where you move next to a glyph, use a MP to go through it and if you have 3 left shop in town.

Again, this is referring to Road to Legends not vanilla Descent. In regular Descent, I think you still need to spend 1 MP to trade items.

Make sure when reading the FAQ that you are aware of what part you are reading because there are some potentially confusing places where things are solely referring to the Road to Legend expansion, which is a campaign style play and has some different rules for certain things.

Yes, a hero must spend 3 MP in town to shop after dying. Basically when you die you start your next turn in town. You declare an action as normal and, assuming you have the MP, you may spend 3 of them to shop, and/or you may spend 1 to move to any active glyph in the dungeon (and from there to take your normal turn.) Declaring a Battle action in town is usually pointless since there's nothing to attack, although I have seen heroes do this and then use fatigue to get into the dungeon (allowing them to come in with both guns blazing, so to speak.)

The hero declares the action that lets him place an order (I forget the name of it right now) and then places a Rest order while he's in town. Its a safe bet he won't take damage in town, so then he'll get his fatigue back at the start of his next turn.

The passage you quoted fromt eh FAQ applies to games using the Road to Legend expansion. Playing the basic game (also known as "vanilla" Descent) you may attack, or take any turn as normal, and then step through a glyph. In vanilla you are also not required to start on or adjacent to the glyph in order to use it. That rule was added in RtL to compensate for the dungeons being much smaller in general.

Trading items with another player is not the same thing as shopping. All heroes are considered adjacent in town, so you can spend 1MP to hand something to any other hero in town. Please note that you cannot freely trade items for 1 MP, it still works as if you were standing adjacent to one anotehr in the dungeon. You also cannot take items from another hero. He must give them to you on his turn.

Again, the section you quoted from the FAQ refers to RtL. In vanilla Descent there are no areas of town nor is there a "restocking" action. In vanilla you spend 3 MP to shop and may then spend additional MP to hand stuff out.

Edit: I apologize for the formatting of my post. This new forum is notoriously buggy and this one seems to have exploded on me. Hopefully you can still gleant he answers you need from what's written here...

Just one important clarification which I couldn´t find in the bug-formatted posts:

You are never allowed to use a glyph (the same or different ones) more than once per turn per hero.

+1. Good call on throwing that in there.

Ah so I was basically just reading the wrong information. sonrojado.gif Thank you for your help.
