List - Carnor's phantoms

By dotswarlock, in X-Wing

I was pondering how I could use 2 phantoms in a game and this is the list I came up with:

- Carnor Jax + Veteran Instinct (27 points)

- Echo + decoy + advanced cloaking device (36 points)

- Whisper + veteran instinct + advanced cloaking device (37 points)

With this build, Echo has PS 6, Whisper PS 9 and Carnor PS 10. Carnor flies in relative proximity to Echo while Whisper flanks from the other side.

- Default behavior is for Echo to borrow Carnor's PS rating, putting him higher than most other phantoms out there. Meanwhile, Carnor does his best to lead the enemy in a merry chase instead of engaging directly.

- If Carnor is out of range (or dead), but Whisper is not threatened by a high PS pilot, he can borrow the PS rating from Whisper instead.

- If Echo dies, there's no PS issue.

- If I need to destroy a dodgy target, I can risk Carnor to deny all focus and evade tokens while the phantoms do their jobs.

I have no idea if the build will work or not, but I'll try it in my next game or 2 and see if its fun :P

I think Jax would die off quick. an INT without PTL is not normally good idea. And PTL on Jax is great to mess with ships that take recon spec, as they get nothing out of it if you get into range 1.

I like the idea of the of the pass off, but dont know if that will work. I mean once you opposition sees your plan they may just break it with a full strike on Jax and Echo. both could (with the right shots) be one shots.

I run a Carnor and 2 phantoms list, but it is a little different. Carnor with PTL and stealth device and 2 sigmas with jammers and stygium. The idea being that you flank with Carnor and try to get into range 1 without them being able to use focus against your jammer sigmas that take advantage of their stygium devices to get evade and focus. Time it up right and you can alpha strike the other guy's best piece to death in the first turn against hobbled no focus dice. If they totally turn on Carnor then just keep them chasing him and eat them alive with your sigmas. It is a different kind of phantom strategy than other people use but I haven't lost with it yet.

That's a very interesting combo, Ryther. I'd guess that, like most lists based around Phantoms and/or Interceptors, it struggles a lot against Falcons. Have you played many Falcon lists? What is your strategy against them?

I've been wanting to try out multiple Phantom lists, just curious.

I've only played one Falcon list with it. I won because I made him split his miniswarm across the asteroids to get to me. I focused down Chewy at range 1 with my phantoms on the second shot. Carnor kept him from using his focus to kill my phantoms until Carnor finally died to the last shot of the falcon. 2 sensor jammer stygium Phantoms against 3 talas is a mismatch. The key was to keep Carnor out of the swarm's arc but still at range 1. It takes flying skill to make the combo work, but when it does it is powerful.
