Texas Throwdown report

By Eithinis, in UFS General Discussion

Well, I'm very exhausted so I'm not sure I'll have too much information but, I had an absolute blast, everyone was awesome, got to put a face to a few names I hadn't had a chance to. Pretty decent turnout on everything as well.

Well, for myself, I was going to run Jon Herr, but Scubadude lent his Jon Herr deck off to another player here, and I didn't want to knock them out with diversity, so I went with Ibuki, i was really just looking for a character to sandbag into Jon Herr (despite me hating the concept of sandbagging really, but the other jon herr could only really play off jon herr, it was built around All.), but I ended up playing exclusively Ibuki.

First game I played against a pretty neat evil/void Basara off the starter, it didn't do that much on discard/momentum hate except for like friendly rip, but did a lot more foundation destruction. I took game one after a pretty long game, was bit of a close game, I got down to like 8 or so, but Evil Doer Destroyer saved me off a Ways of Punishment, and let me kill him the next turn. Next game went a bit quicker, with me winning 2-0.

After that, I played a Hilde deck, went second, and ended up dropping two Lyonette's turn one copying healer, and it pretty much was nothing he could do at that point, as i built up a wall of evil control. the next game he tried to turn 1 me and mulligand for a Dual-Wielding, but had no luck, and I managed to take him out pretty quickly.

4-0 now.

Next I got paired up against an astrid, and we just agreed for a draw then, as Scubadude and Megageese agreed to a draw next to me. The guy I was going to play (who's name I didn't get to catch), was dropping out, so he gave me a win. We check with things, and even a loss would get any of us with a 2-1 record in, and I was a 3-0, so that went like that.

6-0

Got paired against Megageese next, who was running an order/water donovan (mostly water for spike, and most of the other ran water/order anyway, so he'd spinta, foundation, clear with donovan, spike, etc.)

We agree to a draw, and play it out for fun, first game went a bit of a while, defender + spike + LoTM scares me :( . I somehow managed to win that, and the next game he chooses to go first, plays 5 foundations, and I look at my hand of reverse flayer, midnight launcher, knightbreaker, knightbreaker, seal of cessation, a foundation, and an olcadans i believe. I go with flayer, ibuki R, launcher, ibuki R, knightbreaker, ibuki R and check a 3, needing a 4, commit ibuki, and he has no high or mid block. (used a low on flayer i believe? i don't recall exactly.)

So, i get swiss champ, and the curse > :( .

I play the hilde deck again in top 8, which really scared me a few times as I saw none of what i really needed against it, and he takes game 1. I start getting worried about the curse, and game two i ended up taking it with a ichi->launcher->knightbreaker->launcher->knightbreaker. Game 3, I don't recall exactly how it ended, but I managed to take the game.

Next i get paired against scubadude's tri-symbol zi mei, and we get some generic control pieces out with me drawing 6 foundations turn 1 that I really wanted to have attacks and try to turn 1 him :( he can out control me, as I only had one chester's in the deck and was running 3 Lyonette's in place of them because I didn't get a chance to get some chesters before I left south carolina, and Scuba and Nubian_god were lending their's out. Either way, 50 minutes later into a grueling evil/evil control match, he excents out, and I managed to be holding a rejection as my last card against a path of the master'd last copy of a Fury of the Ancients, and lived. Next turn, I had 3 Knightbreakers, and 2 Midnight Launchers. I play our the knightbreakers, checking pretty poorly, ibuki Ring as necessary, go for the midnight launcher, pass, he goes to block and checks a 6 on a half (he takes half for each of these), and he's at 8 health as I'm looking at him with just a midnight launcher in hand (i believe he chester'd something somewhere in here, otherwise he'd be at 7, I don't recall). He manages to get me really low again, i had to Cutting Edge away 5 foundations to be at 1, he was down to 10, and I draw only a midnight launcher from no cards in hand, and he manages to kill me three turns later.

I lose the first game, and we had to have a timed top 8 because of the store closing down, so I only got to play one game sadly, and it went on to Scubadude vs. Megageese. Geese took the first game, Scuba took the second, and Geese finished it up.

All in all, i absolutely had a blast, I love the dallas area crew, got to meet Shinji and Geese, and that sort.

Top 8 was: (Edited after Nubian's post)

Ibuki (Myself, Sage)
Gill (Shelby, I don't know a forum name)
Donovan(Megageese)
Zi Mei(Scubadude)
Chun Li(Preston)
Seong-Mina (Shinji/MarcoPulleaux)
Hilde(James)
Kyo(Ken Lim)

Anyway, to everyone there, was awesome, I totally love you all <3, good times. Probably the most fun tournament I've played in.

Props on playing Ibuki, I hear shes still good. ;)

Grats Megageese for winning, and winning with DONNY none the less. Gotta love it.

Boo on Scuba for placing 2nd again. You know what I think it is... I think you should pick a new character. Or I dunno... Just for some reason... always 2nd...

lol...

Yeah, something like that ;) And I wasn't really wanting to play Astrid again (While she's awesome and fun and stuff), Ibuki was just the right call for me this time I suppose

Zi Mei(Scubadude)
Chun Li(Not sure of his name, sadly.)
Seong-Mina (Shinji/MarcoPulleaux)
Hilde(Don't know a username)
And I'm not sure of the other one, I believe Megageese played against them first round of top 8.

The 8th character was Cutting Edge Kyo, with Ken Lim running it.

Chun Li was run by Preston, and Hilde was run by James of the Austin crew.

Ah, right, Kyo. And I forgot to put in James' name :o , I didn't catch the other two's though. You guys are awesome <3. Pictures comin up sometime?

Ahahaha, you turn one'd the hell out of me xD Yeah, I get this stupidly great drop of, like, Experienced Combatant, Chinese Boxing, Lord of the Makai, Aquakinesis, Makai High Noble, Olcadan's, and have just the last Owlface in hand. Little did I know I would be eating 29 damage the next turn! O God, I don't think I've had a more amusing game in a loooong time (and short, too).

I just wish I would've known you only had 1 Chester's...I had my full set that I wasn't using! I'm really sad now =(

But it was great having you. Good to place a face to the name after all this time! And all of our games were a BLAST. "Are you gonna attack me this turn?" xD

Ryan: You got that right! He's my favorite character (well, favorite legal version, anyway) for a reason. Bwaha. And when I was playing Sage/Eithinis' Astrid deck for fun, someone commented that it was like watching you play. Made me smile.

Unfortunately, those foil Cursed Bloods I got from teams the day before weren't legal yet. Sad face.

Wish I could have been there, sadly I am working.

Props to everybody who rolled out into top 8. Glad to see Shinji up there, glad to see a player with Hilde up there as well.

OMG Diversity is OMG

When top 8 was called, I was in 5th. I'm not even joking when I say that 6th place was, yes, Seong Mi-Na piloted by Jacob.

I had 2 wins, 2 draws

he had 2 wins, 2 draws

I BARELY beat him by "strength of schedule"

So yep, my Seong Mi-Na carried on...only to be ripped to shreds by Geese's Donovan </3

I'm going to post my tourney report in the tourney report forum, and I promise, it'll be a decent read.

In the General Discussion I am going to be posting a research article. I figure, Hell, instead of just using my "logic", I'll use some actual experience gained from an actual regional.

=)

Hey this is Lin, I finally decided to make an account on the forum here. It was great meeting you and I appreciate you not playing John Herr to knock me out. Although I didn't really get in top 8 anyways. =(

By the way, Morrigan is hot. =)

Yeah sure thing ;) Ibuki worked out better for me anyway.

And she totally is.

It was awesome gettin to meet you and James, he totally scared me in the top 8 :(

Thanks for the props Sage it was awesome playing against you and being the only 2 decks that didnt run feline spike FTW!!

It was cool meeting Shinji and Lin congrats for rocking my all John Herr deck.

I missed out on the fun and games.. the car owner of my crew (my old car can't make it there) had to work out of town and couldn't make it back early enough in addition to my fiancee having to work that Saturday so I had no one reliable enough to watch my shop.

I want to play against the Texas crew again so badly.. I'll probably to terrorize that shop once again at another time. Congratulations to all who placed and great job Brian. I said before that I won't be going to Nats this year but my desire to go has increased.

Perhaps consider what I'm going for; passing up events along the way to save up for Worlds.

hey wakeen are you gonna post your own report?

Yessir. Probably get started on it now-ish.

Feckin' Powerful Styles =/

Yeah, the Lafayette crew's presence was missed, but I understand how things happen, and priorities like keeping the shop open are a tad higher than play-time. Hopefully we can all have a strong showing at Worlds this year.

But yeah, thanks to all of the people who trekked out to Throwdown: Scuba, Sage, and the Abeliene and Lubbock crew. It's great to get some fresh faces around the area. Way to represent!

And to the more familiar Austin and San Antonio crew, it's always a pleasure to meet up with ya'll. We need to find more excuses to play, as Austin is pretty central and has a huge play area.

Finally, I want to congratulate the home team for properly holding it down with a strong showing: 7 locals participating and 5 making Top 8 before diversity (tough luck, Jacob; you'll have yours soon) is awesome.

THIS! THIS RIGHT HERE!

I think Austin needs to be THE UFS place. Play area or not, Austin is the...

CAPITAL!

I've had so much fun going out to random clubs and concerts that are thriving and being begged by homeless people to buy them a pizza or send them to South Carolina.

The funny thing about this is, while it isn't quite what you were saying, while I was in South Carolina, I've totally asked someone from out of state to buy me a pizza.

You know what...

winner of our match buys pizza.

Now children, watch your language.

We don't have a language filter here because we assume you can be adults. Please think about what you're posting befor you hit the button.
