Questions for "all expansions gameplay" people

By jgt7771, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

This also assumes you're playing with at least every Board Expansion available: Dunwich, Kingsport, Innsmouth.

(1) For those who play solo with multiple Investigators, how many are you planning to play with now? Do you intend to cover four towns with just four Investigators? Now that the game would behave as if there were only TWO of them, with even one more allowable Open Gate? Or are you going to buy another TV tray and start playing with five or six Investigators?

(2) Now that you've got 4 Aquatic Location Markers, where are you going to put the extra two? (C'mon, don't tell me you haven't thought about it.) I suppose the logical choices are the Merchant District and Rivertown Streets, reminiscent of that Dark Pharaoh Flood card that put Exhibits "downstream" on the Arkham River. But maybe the Merchant District Streets are a tad redundant, and you would rather give your Aquatic Monsters the freedom of movement provided by the Bishop's Brook Bridge? (Is that too shallow for them?)

"Darn", I'll never qualify gui%C3%B1o.gif .

Back to the location vs location discussion, are we gran_risa.gif ? KH rules (and IH as well, after a quick check-up) use the following wording:

"identify two of the original Arkham Horror locations"

I think in this case location = location (and not street), one of the round things with either green or red diamond on top.

I'm of the opinion Dunwich needs some connection to the Aquatic, so I'd attack it to the Bishop Brook's Bridge; and if you're willing to accept a slight attachment to the fantasitc, I'd say Cold Spring Glen.

As far with number of players, 6 investigators seem well balanced, but a pain to keep track of. :)

I have some trouble managing four as it is. It would be wise to go higher, but I just don't think I can do it.

I don't want to inflict more than two investigators on everyone if I have multiple players though. So looks like four will be the magic number for most games.

"Elwood: Do you have any white bread ma'am?
Mrs. Murphy: Yeah.
Elwood: I'll have some toasted white bread please.
Mrs. Murphy: You want butter or jam on that, honey?
Elwood: No ma'am, dry. "

Heh... You've just given me an idea for a herald ;') but a long term one (I'll wait until I see Innsmouth's stuff first though).

As for the question. It's impossible to answer. Currently I have fairly high win/loss ratios with three investigator using all the boards, however I can see how the addition of another board might make the game a bit tougher (of course 3 investigators with a monster limit of four and eight openable gates and an outskirt limit of 7?) hooooooo. Do you really need another perk? Arkham will feel like a ghost town. But that's not why I said impossible. We still don't know what the personal stories are and what their overall effect will be, so there's no saying what a proper response to the new board might be.

If it turns out that the game is now crushingly difficult, perhaps what I'll do is instead of drawing three random characters, I'll draw two random characters and the third one will be three random characters (out of which I will choose one).

I would rather put the extra aquatic tokens (not that I would, I'd expect players to just remember it— or I'd remind them while they're on the spots— I don't use aquatic tokens right now) for Rivertown and Merchant Dist. if only because Dunwich is so rarely visited. What good is it if it has an aquatic attachment if the town is empty most of the time? An aquatic monster would only move there if there was an investigator there, and the odds of that are infinitesimal. The odds of someone being in a main street in Arkham however are considerably higher.

If you read the stories, Dunwich just isn't an aquatic location. It's inland, and at best has a stream -- not anything like the coastal towns at all. Trying to define Bishop's Brook Bridge as "aquatic" is only slightly more plausible than calling your bathtub an aquatic location. gui%C3%B1o.gif

Of course, it's your game, really, so if you want to define it that way, there's no harm at all. It does go against the theme, though.

CLOWNS! CLOWNS IN THE SHOWER!

...

It?

Each board expansion is missing something the other two have.

  • Dunwich doesn't have aquatic locations
  • Kingsport doesn't have unstable locations
  • Innsmouth doesn't have Other Worlds

It's all good. Part of the board's identity!

Yeah, good point! That's what I love about these expansions; they each feel like a different place.

Point taken.

I suddenly had a gibbering flashback to that ancient spoof flick "Saturday the 14th" where the Creature from the Black Lagoon rose out of the bathtub. (Did I just horribly date myself?)

Date yourself? Not at all! That was the image I was trying to convey, more or less. :D
