Caverns of Thuul

By watergrass, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I have a question - in the Caverns of Thuul, if the Heroes activate a Gemstone Dragon, but then run away without killing it and enter one of the other areas and activate a dragon there, what happens to the first dragon? I only have one Master dragon figure, so presumably the first dragon disappears to reappear in the second area. This means the Heroes can run from the second dragon, and clean out the first room with no intereference, then activate the third dragon in the third area, leaving the second room undefended. Is this a valid tactic?

I seem to remember the description of that dungeon saying that the heros can't pick up a gem pile (encounter marker) while any gem dragon is alive. so they could leave one dungeon stuck in one of the areas, and explore the others.... they won't be able to get any more gems in the process though.

The key is the last sentance of the first paragraph:

"Due to the magic of the caverns, no other gemstone cache may be picked up until the Gemstone Dragon has been killed."

So, I would say no, they could not clean out the areas without killing a dragon. Anyway, looking at the map and where the dragon shows up, I find it hard to believe that the hero picking up the gems could get out of the room without dying or a misplay by the OL.

Yea, that's correct, you can't pick up another cache until the last dragon has been killed. Of course if you prepare for the dragon to appear and activate the cache with your ranged character guarding first, all your guys can make their attacks before the gemstone dragon goes, and you should be able to take it down in 2 turns, 1 if you're lucky/well equipped.

And of course you can just send you're lowest conquest character to pick up the final cache and let them die if you don't really want to take on the last dragon. Zyla fulfilled that role quite well in the campaign I'm playing now. gran_risa.gif

Thanks for all of those - yes that makes sense.

The caverns are so dark....so dark.....dear god, what's that noise....did you hear that......Kirga was that you?........Did you fart?........What's that smell?......

I OL'd this dungeon against my group and slaughtered them!!!!!! This is by far and away one of the hardest dungeon (floors) we have played. Next time they might come equipped with weapons that cause daze or other ill effects to handle the evil dragons!!!

Wasn't so bad for my group, I think we even got more conquest out of it than the overlord. Though we did manage to get there before he could upgrade silver beasts and chugged power potions for each of the first two dragons, letting zyla die alone for the last lengua.gif

When we played this dungeon, I was the Dragon avatar and my Beasts were definitely upgraded. The upgraded Dragons were the onnly thing worth upgrading. It was during that campaign that I found out that upgrading beast as a whole is not as effective as the other two categories.
