Green Bay Regionals Report-Finished!

By DoubleD3, in UFS Tourney Reports

This will not be your normal tournament report, for this is not your normal UFS event. This is a Wisconsin UFS event, its more like a carnival of hilarity and dirty jokes and there just so happens to be UFS involved.

Friday Night

The fun begins Friday night where Jeff(our scout), my brother Lee, the newest UFS player in Geebs Eric(Chang Jr.) and I are chillin at our place playing some mad UFS getting ready for singles on saturday. I have Astaroth built at the mo and am working on some fine tuning and wanted to see if the big man can take out the evil that is Evil. So after about 10+ games where Jeff and I play him against Evil Zi Mei, Fire Sagar, and Tri-symbol Mina...he has won ONE game. Saddest Astarfish EVA. After surveying my options Jeff tells me to play Donovan, I agree because its 5 AM...

Saturday-Singles

Lee and I roll out of bed at 10.30 and run over to McDos for some oh so savage lunchfast. Next stop is Jeff's for a bit to grab some Aquakinesis for my deck, and BLAMO! off to Gnome Games for singles. We get there and the UFS players start piling in. The Green Bay crew was there in full force, Jacob "The Executioner" Yanda, Habek, Will, Steve, Josh, Garrison, Eric, Lee and I all rep the home team. There are a few out of towners as well, Jeremy(Jdubs) Nick(Tripsex) Jack (Jchang), and Dani(Shadowdragon) all make the trip up north. Thirteen people in all. Not too shabby! Everyone says hello and our esteemed Scout gets the pairings up!

Round One

Derrick VS Nick...OH BABY!

Its me vs trips. Great, just perfect. Nick and I are good buds so we did not want this match up till later, but ah well. He is playing Jon Herr, and I am playing Donovan. Game one is just a lot of setting up with each of us waiting to eek out some sort of advantage. Finally I go in for a killing blow with Lunar Slash, but I make a horrible mistake, I Enhance with Donovan! Now when I go for the kill, I need to check a 8 on High Plasma...yeah no good. Nick then kills me with Evil attacks from hell. Ah well, there are two more games right....RIGHT! Game two takes FOREVER. Again each of us tries to one up the other and gain some sort of advantage. I try to kill early, but Bitter Rivals keeps me down. Finally time is called I have to go for broke. I trip up at the one yard line, and Nick wins 1-0

0-1

Round Two

Derrick vs Eric

So its the student versus the master. Eric is a Sagat player and has been playing for 2 weeks. He is doing a great job and picking up the game really well. Unfortunately I get a very nice foundation base out game one and close the deal quickly. Game two goes a lot better for him, but with Shooting+Battle Prowess I avoid a lot of the damage. It ends up being a 2-0 to me, but Eric was a great sport and I am waiting for the day he gets the better of me and I feel the burn!

1-1

Round Three

Derrick vs. Lee

Cain vs Abel, Donovan Vs Zi Mei. Lee and I play all the time, and he usually gets the upper hand with his well built and run Evil Zi Mei. Today was no exception. I manage to steal one game from him, but the wall of Evil wears me out and I fall to repeated use of Midnight Launcher to my face.

1-2

Round Four

Derrick vs. Habek

Habek and I go way back, both of us are part of the GB crew and it was the first time we got a chance to play in MONTHS. He was running a water Mai Chop loop. Luckily for me game one I got out some early control and was able to kill her off in one turn. Game two was much close with me barely blocking a Chop and avoiding a savage combo beat down. I work on chipping down his vitality a bit until I can get in with Lunar Slash FTW. Really fun match!

2-2

So after four rounds I am 2-2, but thanks to diversity I make the cut. Nick ends up getting diversified out by Garrison with JON HERR. CRAZY TALK!

Top 8

Derrick vs Garrison

Basically this is one of the most boring matches I have ever played in my UFS career. It really wasn't anything about the deck, I mean yeah Jon Herr cheats, and yes Evil does have the best foundation base ever, BUT I played the other evil decks and felt like I was in the game. This was not true in the top eight match...not by a long shot. It was the way Garrison played the deck, and I don't want to knock Garrison, he is a nice enough guy, but when all you do all game is set up a wall of foundations and put all your attacks on the bottom of your deck until you draw a fistful of attacks and go for the kill behind an inpenitrable wall...yeah no fun. So in conclusion, I lose game one, and then half way through game two I scoop as I have better things to do then play with myself.

Saturday-Night

Everyone knows that post-UFS is where it is at! Some of the crew head back to mi casa for some mad UFS fun, and to just chill and shoot the ****. Nick, Jack, Jeff, Eric, and Aaron(a local UFS player who could not make singles) join Lee and I for some mad fun. Later my fiance Julia joins the group and gets to see what happens when gamer nerds get together. She also almost kills Tripsex in a Festival when we go on a frozen pizza run....but that is long story and not appropriate for this thread. After about 12390735 games of UFS, random late night deck tech, and Jack and I talking about god knows what till about 5 in the AM everyone gets to bed....well almost. Jack has a snoring problem and by problem I mean its like sleeping next to a freaking chainsaw...but we love you anyway Jack!

Sunday-Teams

This is going to be short, as its pretty late and I still need to write up my thoughts on the event and the meta and such. Basically Team Slap Chop (DoubleD, Tripsex, and Jdubs) VINI VIDI VICIed all over the place and we got a box a piece...OH BABY!

After cracking our boxes and some savage tradery everyone parts ways and agrees to meet up at the MWCC II: Son of the MWCC.

Prizops and Slizops

Meta Thoughts by DoubleD

I am really enjoying the meta right now. Even though Evil is far and above every other symbol when it comes to a foundation base, I still feel that if played correctly there are a few symbols that can really take it to the pitchfork. There is a lot more freedom in deck building, and least from what I saw, you don't need to just run a certain attack, or attack line up, you can try new things and still do well. Evern though I have not been playing UFS on a competitive level for very long I have to say that the format is pretty balanced right now. My only beef is that it is pretty hard for newer players to deal with Olcadan's, a card I wish would be banned as I hate it with every fiber of my being, but eh if that is the only problem(well and Bitter Rivals needing an E commit:) then I am willing to deal with it for a while. To sum it up, I love UFS, I love James Hata, I love the future of UFS.
