Arkham Horror Quiz

By Stenun, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I actually came across the "S" thing because I was updating the monsters section of the Arkham Wiki to include the movement type on the sortable list. After I added the movement colors, I noticed a huge string of different colors down in the S section.

I'm going to take a stab at the closed question. Do the League Scenarios count?

  • 1 when Harney Jones's is closed
  • 1 when the North Point Lighthouse is out of commission
  • 3 for "Strange Lights on Campus" headline (all yellow locations are closed)
  • 3 for "City Gripped by Blackouts" (all the shops are closed). Technically, if both these cards occurred back to back, the first one wouldn't end until the end of the same mythos phase where the other one takes effect. In the brief period between activating the Headline effect and the end of the Mythos phase, both headlines would be in effect.

..would be 8. With the league scenarios, it's possible to have a couple more closed places, isn't it? Then it would be 10 (IIRC; maybe 11).

Anyone else want to take a stab at that one?

Ooo! Unneccessary! Terror Track at 9!

Do you count Shudde M'ell's earthquakes as closing locations? The effect is identical. So that gives:

- 3 shops from terror (rather than Blackouts)
- 2 (Harney Jones, Lighthouse) from encounters
- 7 from earthquakes
- Science building from the strange lights card (library and admin Shudde's already got)
- Hibbs from Temperance Fever

That's 14. If you used a Shudde M'ell league scenario then Woods and Silver Twilight could be closed (but then the lighthouse wouldn't be), for 15 total.

If you don't count earthquakes, then that's 10 total.

-=-

Velma's Gratitude gets turned up by stopping someone trashing the place. You need Fight 4 or more, and must take an Injury card to do it.

-=-

Another question, then: you are holding a custom item that you may discard to automatically pass one skill check, regardless of the difficulty and modifier. You do not want to be devoured (regardless of the reward), but have no immunity of any sort to it. What combinations of circumstances - other than Final Battle or drawing a duplicate Madness/Injury - could lead to you being devoured anyway. I can think of at least five, but there may be others.

I would count Earthquakes; that's a legitimate condition. And there is the "Kingsport Mists" Environment that closes all three Kingsport Head Locations. So that's 17, which would trump the Shudde M'ell scenario.

But by the end of the Second League, Kingsport may be added once more, and the Woods and the Lodge might still be Closed...

Aha. Terror level! DERP.

  • 3 from the terror level
  • 3 from Strange Lights
  • 1 from Temperance Fever (SL and TF must be back-to-back)
  • 1 from the NP Lighthouse
  • 1 from Harney Jones's Shack

Oh, good call jgt7771 ! So could be 17 eh? Of course, with all 7 rubble tokens used up, and the Terror Level at 9 or 10, you might as well give up ;)

I wonder what kind of clositude we'll get from Innsmouth.

Are there any other location-closing headlines? If you fail the Nightmare Pool rumour, you get 3 extra mythos cards resolved instantly, which could allow for up to 5 'until end of next turn' headlines to be in play simultaneously.

City Gripped by Black Outs and another one from King's Port that closes all the Key Locations in King's Port (Cause Way etc), Fourth of July Parade closes the streets at the River Docks!

May I suggest that rather than adopting a strict "answerer posts the next question" rule, we simply insist that you have a go at answering at least one previous question while asking your own?

In that light:

"Old debts come due" can certainly devour you without a skill check, but I'm not sure if that counts since assuming you know the game and all cards, under your given circumstances, you wouldn't agree to the Dark Man's offer. Other than that, there's at least one encounter that deals 3 sanity and 3 stamina damage to you without a check (you can spend clue tokens to negate them, but you may have none), which can devour you if both go to zero. Also, if a Cthonian and a Colour Out of Space are on the board at the same time and they both activate together, that would do it. I can't think of any others.

As to the most expensive common item, I'm going to take a wild guess and suggest the Elephant Gun.

My question:

What is the minimum possible number of turns in which you can lose a game of Arkham Horror (assuming all expansions) and how is it done? Another "I don't know the answer" question, I'm afraid, but I think I can see how it could happen in two turns. One may be possible.

Well, one way is to have an eight player game awaken Azathoth turn one by opening four gates during encounters.

The elephant gun is actually not the most expensive common item, although with upkeep it may as well be.

Most expensive common item is definitely the Magnum at 8 Dollar.

You can get devoured against Yog-Sothoth at least, by being LiTaS. There are a number of OW encounters that send you there without a check. There is also at least one OW encounter in R'lyeh that devours you if you do not discard a specific number of clue tokens. You could be devoured by a dual-color OW encounter in the specific OW. Your Sanity and Stamina could reach 0 at the same time (through various encounters).

I am trying to think of a way to reduce your maximum Sanity or Stamina to 0 but I don't think you can reduce it below 1 (3 Sanity character with Mythos Lore or 3 Stamina character with "Dark Wind Covers Arkham" environment, both against Cthulhu).

Consumption and Schizophrenia (Injury/Madness) both give -1 Max Stamina/Sanity respectively. If you want to suicide from Max hitting 0, Summon the Beast Within and Open the Third Eye are options as well.

Out of 34 available Allies, there is only one pair with matching bold-faced Skill stat bonuses. Who?

There is only one Investigator with a board marker with a mirror image of its sheet picture on one side. Who?

Richard Upton Pickman shares stat bonuses with William Bain. Sarah Danforth shares the focus bonus with Corinna Jones (But I can see that not counting).

I don't know about the Investigator markers... the one thing in this game I haven't examined closely, I suppose.

As a general rule, most investigators have a good score (5 or higher) in two of their stats. For instance, Michael has high fight and high speed, while Amanda and Leo are high in nothing. Can you name the one stat pair that has nobody high in both stats? Can you name the stat pairs that have only one person high in in both?

1) I want to say Fight and Lore, but that's just an educated guess. I've played fast Spellcasters and sneaky Spellcasters, fast Sweepers and sneaky Sweepers, but my general memory soup thinks that if I'm really good with a gun, then I'm as dumb as a stump. My first thought, however, was Fight and Will...except I just played with Pete.

2) ...Which makes me want to guess that Pete is the only one fantastic in both Fight and Will. That can't be right, can it? But I really can't think of anyone else who has both higher than 5.

But now I'm REALLY guessing. (Shame on you for not at least telling us how many there are! gui%C3%B1o.gif ) Bob (Speed and Will), Tommy (Fight and Luck), and Daisy (Will and Lore)?

A long these lines, having just played Pete, I know Pete has 5 or higher in Fight, Will, AND Sneak. But I also know there is another who excels in 3 Stats. Who?

Oh, very well. By my count, there are two, Daisy and Pete. But thank you for correcting me - I had almost forgotten about Wendy, and originally had more in the category. But Wendy is the other character with high scores in three stats, Sneak, Speed and Luck.

Your other instinct is correct as well. No character has both high lore and high fight. Perhaps it was an unwritten design rule? Some characters come close, I suppose, with Diana, Silas and Agnes being the highest.

Lola echoes Bob's Speed and Will, while Jack duplicates Fight and Luck.

I'll bump this one with a weird one:

Which IH investigator's portrait was part of a DH Common Item picture? Name the Common Item as well, so can't just throw out wild guesses lengua.gif .

(might be more than 1, just know one I came across in a recent game; it was cool, I was looking at the pic of the Item thinking, I've seen that somewhere...)

It has to be a Task, because it's not one of the weapons. RRRRRRRRRR. >wrack wrack wrack< I want to say Norman and the Geological Report (Black Cave-Woods-Science Building)? Admittedly, all I can see is blackboards. (This is pure guess. If you want to preserve the answer, just ignore me...or buzz me out, Trebek.)

Can't see anything shared in those two pics (Mineralogy Report being the Task).

Let's see if people get it first before I throw out a bone.

Oh yeah, I know this one. I noticed it in one of the IH previews. It's Trish and the Courier Run task.

Ding! Ding! Probably too easy for those who are familiar with my Trish fetish gran_risa.gif .

Excuse if has not correctly chosen a theme.... and for my English too:))

But there is a question on game - There is a counter - Activity - which is put in any zone of a city......But what to do it's absolutely not clear further. Whether it's impossible to enter into it a zone whether that still.......

thanks
