Monster Surges with Innsmouth

By diablo666, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hello,everyone.

Just wondering about the wording in the preview and our group asks the question,"Would a monster surge put a token on the deep rising track?"

Any opinions and maybe it is a stupid question. Our group seems to agree that it would not add a token there.

What do you think?

The wording in the preview didn't lead me to believe that a monster surge would add a Deep One token. A monster surge isn't the result of preventing a gate from opening; it's the side effect of the Ancient Ones exploiting a gate that is already open. (That's my interpretation of a monster surge, at least.) From a pure metagame perspective, having monster surges trigger Deep One tokens would make the game ridiculously hard.

However, the preview only listed the "primary ways" that a Deep one token could be placed, so it's entirely possible that a monster surge could cause a Deep One token to be added to the track. If the rulebook PDF is posted next week as many of us suspect it will, we'll know for sure then.

Monster surges occur when a gate opens on another gate, the gate isn't prevented from being opened, so I wouldn't think they add Deep One Rising tokens. And by 'primary means', I'm pretty sure that just means there's a few encounter/mythos cards that add a token to the track, but those times are so few and far between that they're not what really make the track tick.

I'm betting monster surges do add a Deep one rising token. Problem is under the current rules we don't have good defintion of what "prevent " means and even "gate opening". Hopefully Innsmouth will be clearer than spoiler. If monster surges don't add DOR tokens, it doesn't sound like Innsmouth isn't going to be much of a threat.

During the Mythos Phase, the first player draws a
mythos card and performs the following actions:
1. Open Gate and Spawn Monster

This indicates that a gate us supposed to open here. Three things normally happen here. One thing is a gate opens and two things where a gate doesn't open (which I would call prevented), but rules don't use that term.

1. Open Gate and Spawn Monster
A. Location Has Elder Sign

B. Location Has Open Gate
If there is already an open gate at the location, a monster
emerges from every open gate currently on the board.
This is called a monster surge...

C. No Elder Sign or Gate

Monster surges do not count as 'preventing' a gate from opening, because when a gate opens on an existing gate, you never open a gate, you always have a monster surge instead. The two main causes are going to be elder sign tokens and Kate's ability. There may be other methods that are slipping my mind at the moment, so as usual, I hedged the language a bit to cover that.
