Hull Upgrade versus Stealth Device

By Kyla, in X-Wing

I never use a Stealth Device (SD) on 2 or fewer Agility ships, it's a waste of the 3 points, I give it a Hull Upgrade (HU). 3 agility ships love a SD and can benefit from the HU but I just prefer SD, as a 4 Agility is more fun to roll.

Or if you have the spare point Shield Upgrade (SU) is nice too, as it takes the crit hit and eats it.

Like I said before Shield Upgrade only eats the first hit, if that first hit is a critical hit then good. But if against a hit and a critical hit the Shield Upgrade is 2 points down the drain for the same effect that Hull Upgrade would have done for you.

Now if you had a shielded ships such as the HWK-290 (and the future MA-3 Scyk) Shield Upgrade would be great because it essentially doubles the shield strength of your ship and you can then be more certain to absorb that first critical hit that comes your way. But for things like Ties even for Interceptors or Bombers Shield Upgrade will become a waste of points that could be spent elsewhere and would have a better effect.

Shield upgrade is 4 points but I agree, it's best on a ship that already has them to begin with..

In a specific example I am curious about I would mention new Boba, with perhaps lone wolf. That would seem to equate to (in my head, not necessarily in reality) to three fairly decent evades a turn. Obviously there are a ton of factors that can change all that, but... 3 evade dice with three re rolls (probably) and the focus saved for offense.

Seems good to me.

the hull upgrade can be "wasted" in a similar way to the stealth device - you've got a ship with only 1 hit point left, plus its hull upgrade and the opponent gets two hits in, the ship is as dead as it would have been without the upgrade.

Without the hull upgrade you could say that attack damage was "wasted" due to the overkill potential. In an overkill situation ANY durability upgrade could be seen as wasted just the same as options used to boost damage can be wasted/worthless if they only lead to overkill situations.

When it comes to comparing Hull and Shield upgrades the Hull is normally better because it is cheaper. The shield does have two advantages however. The first is that it can negate a [crit] result which would have resulted in a face up card. The second is really that it just prevents getting dealt a card at all. If that card is face-down this is rarely an issue but if you ever encounter something that can flip damage cards then not getting the card (Shield) is better than being able to have one more on the ship before it is destroyed. If Rexler fires on a ship that SU may not prevent a [crit] from going through but it can prevent the target from getting a card which Rexler could then flip up; Saboteur is the same issue and more removed from combat.

I really tired of use SD. on Soontir and then get a damm crit damage, take away the SD. and got a 2 hits crit. Its happens more then often to me. So I decided to changed for Hull, or shield is I got the extra point. Works better, at least for me.
