Monster figures from version 1?

By jimjim19681968, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi, I have been playing Descent for a couple of months now and I love it.

As the overlord I want to expand my monster pool. I noticed about the conversion kit and the 50 monsters within (I am new to all of this).

I have ordered the conversion kit from my local supplier and I know I will only get the cards.

Is there a way to get the figures to go with the cards?

Many thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, those figures are very hard to find, and in most cases you'll be buying first edition sets for $200 or so. FFG is releasing many of the first edition heroes and monsters in small collection packs of 4 heroes and 3 monsters (figures and cards) each. I recommend those or the big story box expansions if you want to expand your collection of monsters and heroes.

The conversion kit was intended for people who already owned the first edition, and wanted to use their old miniatures with the new game.

...Or you can use miniature proxies to use the cards of the conversion kit.

I've done the same and I have to say: Most CK monsters can easily proxied with the base set. You have dragons, you have 4 2x1 hounds, ogre like creatures (ettins) and a bunch of other 2x2 monsters you can use very well for monsters this size.

On board game geek there are even nice looking 3d tokens for all monsters (use it to give you at least a reference of how big the monsters are).

That being said, you only really need to get tokens for the kobolds (where you need up to 12 white and 3 red monsters of the same kind).

If you really want genuine FFG miniatures for your favorite monsters you can purchase the Monster &Hero packs if they come with them.

Otherwise I found reaperminiatures to produce nice looking minis for a reasonable price (2-3$ per miniature) and I am currently buying some of my favorite monsters there that aren't released by FFG.

At first, I really liked the idea of using 2nd edition figures for the CK, until I realized it meant that you couldn't use (for example) Ettins and Giants in the same quest, or goblin archers and skeleton archers.

Yeah I ran into that problem as well. However I realised the base game comes with 3 2x2 monster-groups (Ettins, Meriods, Elementals) and one of them is always unused to be used as a (less thematic) proxy.

For more thematic proxies for your favorite monsters I advise anyone to look into reaperminiatures , because they have a ton of good looking and detailed miniatures for a good price (2-3$/miniature, large miniatures cost up to 8$ I think).
