Force Rating Question

By Hotfoot, in Game Mechanics

Simple question, as I don't have the Beta yet, but is there a limit on Force Rating, or is it whatever you can manage to purchase?

No upper limit, at least not yet. So it's just how much you can get your hands on.

The way I currently read it though is that you gain 1 Force Rating with your career, and then either 1 or 2 more with your talent selection. So that means that the most you will ever get is a Force Rating of 3. Is that right?

With a single spec I think you're right, MoonSwingChronicles--but you can pick up multiple specs. There's roughly one +1 FR talent/tree (some have 2, and some have 0), so with endless XP you could get a really high rating. As always, XP is the limiting factor.

The way the game works is that you're free to buy into other specializations besides your chosen starting one. So as a FaD character, you start with Force Rating 1 just for picking a career/specialization in FaD. Then most trees give access to 1 Force Rating increase, a few with none, and a few with 2. But you're free to buy into other specializations and go down those trees and grab other Talents/Force Ratings.

So for example, if you start as a Sage, you can buy into Seer, and grab all those force ratings, taking you from 1 force rating at character creation up to a force rating of 5.

So if I start with Guardian: Peacekeeper (giving a +1 Force Rating), I can soon after purchase an additional Specialisation (lets say Seeker: Pathfinder) and get a +1 Force Rating?

I did not realise that.

You need to buy the +1 FR talents buried in those specs to boost your FR beyond 1, but yes.

Technically you don't get +1 to Force Rating when choosing your career*. You gain a force rating of 1**.

*A character can have many specializations, none of which in Force and Destiny allow you to gain a force rating when purchasing the talent tree, but they can only have one career.

**Gaining a force rating means if you already have a force rating, you do not add one to it. The only way to increase your Force rating is to purchase the Force Rating talent.

Yep, F&D Specs start with a FR of 1, not +1. So if you already have FR 1 or greater simply getting another Spec won't boost your FR.

Boosting FR requires the purchase of the FR+1 talent. Which there are plenty of between the F&D specs and FSExile and FS Emergent. So if you want to invest in the XP to do it you can get a huge FR.

Of course all that XP to get the FR 12 means you aren't spending it on actual Force Power trees....

Actually, no F&D specialization gives you a Force Rating, only the careers give a starting FR. If you started as an EotE or AoR career taking a F&D spec won't give you a FR—you need to take FSEx/FSEm first (F&D194).

So essentially, the upper limit is as many as you can conceivably buy, which currently sits at around FR 16. Up to 18 if for some reason your GM lets you start as an F&D career, then take Force Sensitive Exile and Emergent (and buy your way up to their respective boosts). By my reckoning, it would take you about... 1,440 XP to get to 16, or 1,670 to get to 18 if you can do that. Have fun with your insane Force antics!

Did you also factor in the actual cost of the force powers?

That's what I love, people will bend over backward to increase their FR and not have enough XP to buy enough power upgrades to actually make use of all those pips...

I factored in no other costs, only the absolute bare minimum required to obtain the Force Ratings. You will definitely need more than that to be anything approaching an effective character. Imagine a 2,000 XP game where everyone is Starkiller.

Or better yet, don't. Nightmares.

Its no wonder Fantasy Flight are not game to stat out Vader and the Emperor :)

When 900 years old you reach, have as much XP, you will not.
