Thoughts on Navigator and Phantoms?

By Intys Rule, in X-Wing

Specifically with Echo? Not only will it allow me to change speed, but also lateral displacement. I think with Navigator, I will then only have to commit to three bearings and can adjust speed to suit.

Anyone with experience using Navigator? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I like Phantoms with Navigator instead of Recon easier to kill :P

Navigator only works with maneuvers. Decloak is not a maneuver.

It isn't bad. You have more ability to miss bumping and asteroids. Just keep in mind that it is most important to survive in a phantom. Survive to shoot that big gun again.

Early on, just after Imdaar Alpha, I ran Echo with Navigator. It really helped, as I could react to battlefield developments better. I highly recommend it, especially for learning. I would just have to pick a direction to turn and figure it out later. I think it's far more important on Echo that it was on the other Phantoms, certainly.

As mentioned Navigator will only work with maneuvers and does nothing for your decloaking movement. I'll also point out that there are SIX bearing instead of just three. You have to count left and right separately for turns and banks and would also add k-turns to that as well.

It certainly has its uses on a Phantom and on Echo is particular.

My issue here is that the Phantom might not move enough to be in optimal range, or might have moved too much to be in Range 2 instead of Range 3. Being able to adjust to a hard bank 1 instead of the dialed-in hard bank 3 (or vice versa) would be a bonus at times.

SableGryphon has the right idea. Until I have a firmer grasp on Echo's move options, being able to adjust it would be beneficial.

StevenO and Ryther, I wonder what makes you think I was thinking of Navigator and decloaking? I know it only works with maneuvers and I said THREE bearings because with Navigator, I will only need to decide if I want to hard-turn, bank-turn, or go straight. The left/right option is easier to choose because I know roughly where I want to be, just not the exact placement and Navigator will hopefully allow me to fine-tune this last bit.

I'll say I commented about the decloak because Ryther did. I'll say it has something to do with when you say "but also lateral displacement" which has us thinking of the "roll" you get when you decloak.

You may have said three but you really do need to say at least five bearings. You need to decide left or right as well has turn, bank, or straight and then you can let Navigator control the speed. The problem with saying three bearings is that some will read that and may think they don't need to pick left or right beforehand when using Navigator. Trying to look at the bigger picture here.

Ah, I see.

In my mind, I picture the Interceptor going "up" but then decloaks to the side and basically moves to the side, hence the lateral displacement. I might not be using the proper words, I do apologize.

As for bearing, well, with Echo (facing up), a decloak left-and-back with a bank 2 right will have the Phantom offset to the left but still facing up (or forward) whereas a bank 2 left will have it offset to the left and facing left. If he did a hard turn to the right, the Phantom will be offset left but will be facing up and 45 degrees to the right, a hard turn to the left will have the Phantom facing down and 45 degrees to the left.

The point here is that the bearing change is affected by whether the Phantom does a bank or a hard turn, which the Navigator does not and cannot change anyway. What he can change is the speed of the turn, which I am hoping will allow me better control of my range and angle.

While you are 100% correct that the player needs to decide left or right anyway, I have not included that in my "factors" because as I said, I'll have a rough idea of where I want the Phantom to be and that would have been decided earlier, in fact, before deciding whether to bank or hard turn.
