The exciting world of play-by-post

By bogi_khaosa, in Only War

hi y'all,

I'm starting up an Only War game on rpol, net if anybody is interested. I need probably 3 more players. The adventure will probably be No Surrender . So please people who know the adventure do not apply. ;)

The game style would be "grunts in the trenches over their heads fighting the horrors of the universe" as opposed to "elite special-forces squad." Which functionally means (in addition to playing up the dystopian aspects of the setting) no comissars or stormtroopers and a minimum of advances specialties in general.

It's also "fluff-realistic," which means the squad has to make sense from a fluff perspective. In other words somebody needs to be the sergeant and most people should be "grunts" (= weapons specialists, medics, operators, heavy gunners). An Enginseer would be OK if the regiment is mechanized; an Operator would be required. A Priest would work.

Player-character death is a real possibility (as it should be in Only War anyway if the rules are abided by).

Two other things. Play by post is a slow medium and I know from experience that two things that make the thing drag inordinately (and soon collapse) are lack of posting and not knowing the rules. So if you don't think that you can post more or less regularlty, or are sketchy with the rules, don't start. :) I hope I don't sound like an ass here, but I know from experience what happens. The third thing is the player that just hangs in the background and says "I do whatever everybody else does" or doesn't say anything at all. Please don't be that guy. :)

Anyway, if anybody is interested, let me know.

just checked in on rpol, couldn't find you?

Would like more information, please :)

EDIT: I'll repost some of my notes on "game style" from the game here so interested people will know what they're getting into:

'40K has a lot of different versions, as does Only War. You can do grimdark horror or heroic fantasy, depending on where the GM and players place the stress. Only War seems to usually either be run as "grim struggle for existence against overwhelming odds by ordinary troopers" or as "heroic battle by highly-trained special-forces unit." Personally I am a fan of grimdark, so I am going with the former. That means more of a focus on the dystopia of the setting and things like insanity, death, corruption, and the uncaring nature of the Guard instead of the Gaunt's Ghosts-type swashbuckling adventure. (That is, more the Guard of the IG Codex than the Guard of Dan Abnett.) This is in part because I am a horror GM by background and a fan of "military horror" a la Aliens or The Bunker. So be aware that what you are getting into is more military sci-fi horror than military sci-fi action-adventure (though there will be plenty of that too).

As far as you the players are concerned, at least at this stage, that means I'd like characters to be on the "gruntier" end of the spectrum -- Weapon Specialists, Sarges, Heavy Gunners, Medics, Operators. That does not mean that Advanced Specialities as a class are forbidden, but it does mean that they should be the sort of thing that would logically be attached to a squad of grunts (for instance it makes perfect sense for a squad in an armoured company to have an attached Enginseer). Abhumans are fine (no more than one though please -- I don't want a party of elves and dwarves ;) ). Priests wou;ld almost certainly work. Psykers, maybe. Commissars and Stormtroopers though won't work because they are significantly more advanced than lowly grunts by definition.

I'd like the squad to be "fluffy," meaning we need a Sergeant. If we have 5 players we'll have 10 people total including Comrades. No more than one of each Specialty except for Weapons Specialists (so we could have a Sarge, Operator, Heavy Gunner, and 2 Weapons Specialists, for instance. Or a Sarge, Medic, Priest, Weapons Specialist, and Ratling, say). So we have a squad that makes sense both fluffily and "realistically."'

I'm keen, happy to play Sergeant, or if someone else is dead on wanting that role, happy being heavy gunner.

Great, just send me a request to join here: http://www.rpol.net/...date=1408922172

What is "regular posting" for you? Once per day, twice per day? Any particular times / timezones to consider?

Because if these things aren't a barrier, I'd love to join :)

I'd like playing a Priest or a Ratling Weapons Specialist or Medic, I think. Although I'd be fine with the regular classes too, I'd like to see how playing an abhuman works out :)

As for the regiment, as long as we can get some flame weaponry into the Regimental Standard Kit, I'll be happy. They're extremely effective and very fluffy for a slightly more zealous regiment, which I think would be cool.

Once per day, twice a day, just not once in 48 hours. ;)

Time zones don't matter since it's PbP and I work extremely odd housr anyway.

Well, even for PbP you could say "we play at lunchtimes unless it's the weekend" and then timezones would matter. It would be weird but not impossible...

Okay, great. :D

We could use 1 more player, if anyone is interested.

What regiment are you guys playing? :)

The players are making one right now.
