Heart or Head

By Guest, in X-Wing

Ok normally I wouldn't start a topic like this, but something has peaked my interest.

I was reading the post about an order to buy things in. Box set, second box set etc.

This got me thinking

I've spent the past few days since getting the game. seeing how things move, checking out the team covenant vids and reading the forums etc Basically just getting a bit better understanding of the game. Even watching the tournament final games on you tube, a level of geekiness I haven't trod before :-) This tells you how much I knew when I got the box in my grubby mits :-)

With the game, I also bought an expansion ship. The TIE Defender. Bought solely on it looks as I have no idea how good it is. (I don't mean for tournaments, but in a beer and peanuts game) It's on the desk here and I'm thinking, in the future, how many times can I get away with getting it on the table :-) And will I die gloriously every time.

So as a matter of interest, what was your first buy after the box game.....in fact exclude second box game. Make it expansion.

Heart or head?

Cheers

Andy

Truthfully, I don't even own a box. Friend of mine had two, and to get me into the game he gave me the maneuver templates, damage deck and asteroids from one of his boxes. I did not start playing the game until Wave 2 came out, as I've always been a sucker for A-wings I could not resist, and the first three ships I bought was all A-wings, along with some dice.

So I'd definitely say heart. ;)

I think my first expansion ship was a Y wing to be honest. Mostly because it is what was readily available at the time.

It was a combination of both for me. I started playing shortly after it was released. Heart because I love the look of the models and I got one of each the same day I bought my core set. But also head because I wanted to see what all my options were for building squads.

Y-Wings! Four of them, to be specific. :P

And that's not just because I got into the game during the early waves. I love me some Y-Wings. Even if I'd just started playing, an entire Gold Squadron would've been my first purchase.

So yeah, definitely heart.

I want to say my first non-gift purchase was the Advanced, because Vader, even though internet knowledge said it wasn't worth it. So definitely heart.

Heart. Wanted one of everything just to see how it all worked together - so maybe head, actually.

bought two b wings right off the bat because they are my faves.

heart, head, and OCD for me. my head said 1 of each wave 1 ship. my heart said the tie interceptor was just released and I love that ship so I must have it. my OCD said I couldn't buy a tie interceptor without buying an a-wing for balance. so I bought all 6 ships.

At the same time I bought my first box, I also picked up an A-wing and an Interceptor

I also did not get into X-wing until wave two and expansions were fairly hard to come by when I started collecting. I had to purchase with my head; buying the first thing I could find... after my second starter of course, two Tie Adv., three Y-wings, a Falcon and a single Tie Int. from a local Barns and Noble.

Shortly after that, my girlfriend and I scoured the net and found ships online(I buy fleets for both sides for casual play).

Wanna see my first purchase? You tell me. Heart or Head?

After rebel aces every ship is useful in a tournament seting except for the lowly tie advanced. In a non-competetive setting I think even the advanced is a worthwhile ship. The A-wing is now an excellent ship with the ace's pack.

Heart, man! My favorite ships are A-wings, Y-wings, and Interceptors. It just so happens that those ships were (almost) the weakest ships for tournament viability, but I have way more fun flying them than others.

I really just enjoy maneuverable ships in general, as it really captures the spirit of the dogfight. I like Y-wings simply because they're just an old reliable workhorse, and I always root for the underdog.

Heart! If I was using my head, I wouldn't be dropping a dime on this game! LOL!

Tie fighter expansion and two firesprays.

Total heart guided choice. I tought about buying only one firespray... but i couldn't resist getting his lonely cousin too.

A/SF-01 B-wing heavy fast attack starfighter

I got into it just a couple weeks before Wave 2 hit stores. I bought a Core Set, an X-Wing and a Y-Wing. A couple days later, I went back and bought another Core Set, another X-Wing and another Y-Wing. Somewhere in there I picked up a TIE Advanced and a couple of TIE Expansions. Shortly thereafter, Wave 2 came out, and due to fortuitous financial circumstances I was able to get four A-WIngs, four Interceptors and one each of the large ships.

I think my first expansions were a TIE Fighter, an X-wing and an A-wing. Mostly because that was just about all there was in store at the time. My second purchase however... well that started as a well thought out purchase of a HWK (I had read up on its buffing abilities) but I came home with three or four other expansions as well. I was like a kid in a toy store.

'Well there is the HWK, let's grab one. Oh, oh there's a B-wing as well! And a Y-wing!! And a TIE advanced!!! GOTTA BUY THEM ALL!!!!'

:D

Well when i started things were in short supply so after i got the core set i got more ties and two advanced, they served me well until imperial aces hit.

I bought a Tie Bomber before my two core sets came, played with my friends set.

both? but more heart. I still love that bomber to bits. Its an ace! =)

HWKs are probably the most fun ship in the game. Not super underpowered like the tie advanced. but a serious challenge. fun to fly, good dial, great shenanigans to be pulled with the ion cannon.

one game i denied my opponent something like 14 actions and shot him into asteroids like 4 times.

Core set

Y-wing + Tie Adv

Core set

X-wing + Tie Fighter

Falcon + A-wing x2 + Tie Int x2 + Firespray

....

Gotta catch 'em all.
