What to get??

By player1766202, in X-Wing

Hi everyone!

Sorry to be such a noob but one of my kids has been bragging about X-wing he has played with friends and wants to get his own sets to play now. They been playing for a long time so its not just a "thing" and they fight about who plays atm so he deserves a good set.

We got alot of boardgames and even though we like different things we do play alot together as well in the family. Theres always friends around to play something so we like to have our games up to date and at least one or two new games on the go.

So what do we need to get it going well and be set for both future upgrades as well as be able to build a diversity of forces? They like to play both small, quick forces as well as larger battles for both sides. What I figured is that his friend got most stuff from the series but from the forums here theres alot of talk about duplicates and so to be able to play several ships of the same kind, geting equipment and other things to make the game as dynamic as possible.

I know its all about what side you like to play and the style and things you like but we like to have it as "complete" as possible so whoever we play with can build as good a force as the other, its not fun if you build one strong side so it always hammers the other. And besides.....we always have people over and its fun to have set a big force up just to show off a bit lol.

Hope you all have a great time!

Thomas

Step one: Get the starter game (easy enough)

Step two: Get a second starter set (best value for getting 3 ships, extra dice, damage deck for each side, etc.)

Step three: pick up expansions as you like but keep in mind that imperial works better when they get more ships on the field for the numeric advantage. Currently their are too many good options to advise on. Once you pick some up and play, then the advice will be better targeted depending on what your fleets have.

2 core sets are a must.

Eventually, picking up at least 2 of most expansions is worthwhile. Right now, you can get away with 1 TIE Advanced and 1 HWK. You want at least one X-Wing and one TIE fighter expansion. From there, it depends on what's important to you.

Get 1 of everything. Start with 2 core sets, and proceed in roughly this order:

1 TIE Fighter expansion and 1 X-Wing expansion

1 Millennium Falcon and 1 Slave I and 1 Lambda-Class Shuttle

1 small Rebel expansion and 1 small Imperial expansion you don't already have

1 Imperial Aces and 1 Rebel Aces (which should be available soon)

By that point, you'll probably have a good grasp of the game and will be completely addicted and won't need any more advice about what to buy. :)

I agree with all of the suggestions given here. My order of acquisition would be:

-Core Set x2

-TIE Fighter expansion x1

-X-Wing expansion x1

-Y-Wing x2

-TIE Advanced x1

Now you can fight your own miniature version of the Battle of Yavin. Next I would go with:

-Firespray x1

-A-Wing x2

-TIE Interceptor x2

And then start filling in as you would like. Imperial Aces and Rebel Aces would both be nice additions to your set. A Lambda Shuttle is a fun addition that you might want multiples of later on. If you manage to find a YT-1300 (Milkenium Falcon) then I'd recommend buying it immediately as they are virtually sold out everywhere at the moment.

Da heck? a HWK isn't nearly good enough too be a first rebel purchase. That should be your last.

No, he meant you only need 1 HWK, not that it should be your first.

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, I probably wouldn't make a HWK a first priority acquisition, unless there's an upgrade you absolutely can't live without. Were I building a Rebel fleet from scratch, I'd definitely get an X-Wing, B-wing and Y-wing to start. If you can find a Falcon, grab it. Beyond that, for small ships, it is probably a matter of preference. I would go for at least a couple of Z-95s, because they're cheap to get into a list. An A-wing would be good, but I might get an E-Wing or two first, with RA coming. Then a HWK, unless you really want one for a pilot or upgrade.

Here's what I'd suggest, in rough priority order per faction. You only need the first three items in each list below to get some viable list options:

2x Core Sets (the second set has $45 worth of models, plus extra dice and templates; I wish I'd done this instead of bought the dice pack).

1x TF

1x Imp Aces

1x Firespray (at this point you've got the capability to make some reasonable lists, the rest is gravy)

2x TI

2x TD

2x TB

1x X-Wing

2x B-Wing (though 1x B-Wing and waiting for Rebel Aces is also fine)

1x Falcon (XXBB is a thing, and a falcon in the mix gives you some options)

3x Z-95

1x E-Wing

All of this assumes that you're playing in an environment where you can proxy cards. A squad builder can tell you where to get cards you're missing (I use https://geordanr.github.io/xwing/ for that). Once you want to start playing in tournaments you'll have to pick up enough sets to get the upgrade cards you need (or buy singles from Team Covenant or Ebay).

Note that the TF and XW blisters have different pilot cards from the core set, which is why they're both first on the list of things to pick up (so that you have different options for named pilots).

Though it's worth noting that multiple HWK's may be more viable in a few months, as they will figure into the Scum and Villainy faction.

Also, while everyone has been talking about buying multiples, it's hardly required. I've largely only bought one of everything, and still do quite well and have a blast at both casual events and tournements. The one exception is the Core Set. Doubles is highly recommended due to all the extra stuff you get, along with being able to field a swarm of TIEs.

Kinda what I was thinking, when I said, "Right now..." :D

Honestly Liver if you are like me, just buy what you like most. I did go with HWK first, because I loved the old Jedi Knight games, and I play with easy going fun loving chilled out peeps, and I don't care about bleeding edge competitiveness. *shrugs*

Otherwise, there's plenty of more competitive players here who will gladly point you in the right direction.

I would say this is a good idea but id change it a bit. assuming you are strapped for cash but are still willing to spend something to play this game

2 core

1 x expansion, 1 tie expansion (you could be happy with just this)

imperials: fastest way to get to some interesting builds... id go with a firespray and a phantom. This route gives you a big ship and a super nimble ship to play with. its also a top tier competitive build. phantom + 4 or 5 ties.

or interceptor expansion and imperial aces. 5 ties + soontir (Push the limit and hull upgrade)

rebels: Millenium falcon would easily complete a build. Han Shoots First: Falcon + 2X

E-wing is great as a next choice. cheap too. Corran or Etahn + some Xs is just gravy.
