Becoming a Tournament Organizer

By Dalton85, in X-Wing Organized Play

Hello everyone,

I have recently started an X-Wing group in my area and am curious how becoming a TO actually works. I know FFG has tournament packs, but I have no idea how to get those. I have two stores that are willing to let me host events at their locations, and recently ran a pretty successful X-Wing demo with a very promising turnout. So, how do I acquire tournament packs? Do I need to contact FFG to become an official TO? Does the store need to do it? I really have no idea how to go about this, so any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Stores have to order the kits.

There is no official TO program.

That's what I needed to know. Thank you!

The official prize kits are okay, but you'll probably run through all of the prizes in a single tournament. After that, I suggest that if you want to make your tournaments and events really special and encourage attendance you should invest in other prizes, charge a $5 entry fee (to slowly make your money back) and make sure everybody goes home with something cool. Make sure you print up fliers announcing when tournaments will be taking place. Every time you run a tournament, have another tournament scheduled so you can tell everybody about it.

Some prizes to consider:

Expansion sets

Acrylic range ruler set (Ranges 1, 2 and 3)

Acrylic maneuver template set

Acrylic tokens (focus, stress, target locks, evade, elite talent, droid)

Vinyl decals

Card sleeve packs

Plano storage box

Store credit

For acrylic accessories, I really like the stuff from Applied Perspective and Cog O' Two. Litko and Team Covenant also have some nice templates and tokens.

If you think you can get 10 or more people to show up at a tourney, talk to your FLGS manager about offering a Rebel Transport or Tantive IV or some other expansion as a prize (and maybe charge a $7-$10 entry fee). Ask your FLGS if they'll offer a little discount on X-Wing stuff for game night players.

Run special events like furballs, NOVA's Hunger Games or X-Wing races. Maybe run a store league with a monthly prize. Try to run some kind of tournament or special event every couple of weeks. There are lots of fun tournament formats, such as no mirror matches, Escalation, Epic, 125 points, using huge ships as obstacles, destructible/mobile/divisible asteroids. Be creative and listen to your players' requests.
