Easy, unexpected, mapping tool - AOW3 Editor

By NorrecV, in Game Masters

Age of Wonders 3 is a game by Triumph Studios. Nothing about the game is really important for this topic, except it has a feature where when you zoom the map out it switches from a typical turn-based Civilization-esque view to a hand-drawn map view. I immediately saw some potential here for creating my own maps for RPG games - I wasn't disappointed.

Here are some examples, in chronological order. I'll include links so the screen isn't bombarded.

Tatooine (desert wasteland)

Delthon 6 (planet of my own creation, kilometer tall rocky spires shoot up in the sky, the surface is covered in acidic fog)

Naboo

Urdth (planet of my own creation, forest)

Each of these took ~15-30 minutes of effort. Now I'm not an artist, but I think that's pretty quick and so far I've been able to create every planet I needed. Granted, I had to use GIMP to make the fog-effect seen in Delthon-6, but that's not very hard and GIMP is free. This tool has helped me out a lot, so I wanted to share it. You do have to own AOW3 to access the editor, so maybe this is of limited use to non-gamers. However, if it pops up on a Steam sale for 5-10 bucks...

One thing the editor can't do very well is cities, structures, or non-terrain features. Since AOW3 is a fantasy game they all look like castles or wizard towers, not very star wars-y. I think a city world would take a lot more work to try and pull off and might require finding art offline to paste into the image using GIMP. For now I just put an X and a name if I want to mark a city.

Here is the entire process of going from a blank map template to a .png image.

1) Create map in editor, ~15-30 minutes. Try to avoid the edges and sides of the map. You really just want a square or rectangle in the middle.

2) Add 2 leaders to the map, otherwise the game will end as soon as you load in. I just throw them in a corner.

3) Save and open AOW3 in debug mode, open your map. It'll be under 'Scenarios'.

4) Press CTRL+ALT+C to open the cheat window, type 'BARENTZ' to disable fog of war.

5) Center your view over your map, the edges of the screen start to fade to black. You'll want to zoom out farther than your map actually is to counter this.

6) Press PrtScrn, paste your image into the tool of your choice. Such as MS Paint.

7) Crop as needed, done.

Just wanted to bring this up incase anyone has lamented over creating easy, consistent looking, terrain maps that don't require any artistic skills to pull off.
