Naming Those Ships

By scopedog91, in X-Wing

Just a quick note from a new player here.

Often people post a list they are using, just the Pilot's name, and the upgrade.

But...some of us do not know every pilot, or own all the card/expansions, etc.

Lists like:

Bob+R2

Chewie+PTL

get a little...confusing...

So maybe just give me the Name/ship listing, and we will have less confusion.

Thanks!!!

Learning the community lingo is part of getting into any new game. Most of it is just abbreviations of the card name and is easy enough to figure out. If you have a question about a particular thing someone posted, just ask.

However, if a new player makes a thread and specifically states that they are new and asking for help/suggestions, and someone comes in abbreviating everything, that is obviously not helpful. Unfortunately, I see it happen with absurd frequency.

It's unfortunate, but true that there's no point in saying which ship because the pilot is specific to that ship expansion anyway.

One thing I do when i'm not sure is have a look on voidstate to see if i can spot the name.

As a rebel player I see: Black, Obsidian, Onyx, Saber, Scimitar, Tempest, Sigma and I think WTF? And go look it up.

I bet even some of the top players will look at least one of those up.

Without looking anything up... Lets see

Black = 14pt TIE/ln w/ EPT, ps4

Obsidian = 13pt TIE/ln PS3

Onyx (unsure on this one) = 30pt TIE/d PS1

Saber = 21pt TIE/in w/ EPT, PS4

Scimitar = 16pt TIE/sa, PS2

Tempest = 21pt TIE/x1, PS2

Sigma = 25pt TIE/p, PS3

How'd I do?

Learning the lingo may be part of getting into a new game, but numerous other games' forums have stickied threads which has a list of standard or usual abbreviations. Better yet, some forums actually mark certain abbreviations and you can hover the cursor over them to see what they mean.

Adapt or die newbie!

Your not alone lots of people join see our short hand and get confused just ask and most of the time we won't mock you...much.

You'll pick it up in no time.

Here's a nice resource for you to get acquainted with all the pilots and upgrade cards. The author keeps this site pretty up-to-date: Squad Builder

That would be handy, however you may have noticed admins are for and far between. Ultimately asking everyone to do more for some is imbalanced. This is the internet and all the information is just a google away. As a bonus you can find all kinds of cool stuff while looking. Embrace the journey.

Half credit for Onyx Squadron. Delta is the PS1 Defender; Onyx is the 32-point PS3 Defender.

(Sadly, that was also without looking it up. I have entirely too much brain space devoted to X-wing.)

Something that would be neat is one of the squad builders to have a pulldown of common lists. So if I see a reference to "Biggs Walks the Dogs", I can click over, select the name, and see: http://goo.gl/eFj658

And having built it from memory, I'm not actually sure that's right. :/

Given there are no ship crossover pilots you'll never have a situation where it's unclear what ship Boba Fett is flying, for example.

XWM's homebrew shorthand:
XWM: X-wing Miniatures Game

VI: Veteran Instincts
PTL: Push the Limit
EU: Engine Upgrade

FCS: Fire Control System
SD/Stealth: Stealth Device

ACD: Advanced Cloaking Device
FLGS: Friendly Local Game Store
PS: Pilot Skill
HSF: Han Shoots First (A squad build around Han Solo flying the Millenium Falcon, a ship so expensive it makes up most of your squad)

X,Y,B,A,Z,E: X-wing, Y-wing, B-wing, A-wing, Z-95 Headhunter, E-wing (Usually all in a sequence, such as XXBB, denoting a squad with two X-wings and two B-wings)
Biggs Walks The Dogs: A squad using Biggs on a Range 1 "leash" to draw fire onto him while he's at Range 3.
Swarm: A squad using large numbers of cheap ships.
Elite: Opposite of Swarm, a three ship squad using the best pilots possible.
Arc Dodger: A ship that specialises in using maneuvering actions to get shots while being unable to be shot back. Good examples are the A-wing, TIE interceptor and TIE phantom.
Howl Swarm: A TIE fighter swarm based around keeping a large number of ships (usually Academy Pilots) at Range 1 of Howlrunner, the PS8 TIE pilot. It was incredibly powerful in the first three waves and FFG introduced Lieutenant Blount and the TIE phantom partly to curb its power.
Z Swarm: Rebel analogue of TIE swarm.
OP: Original Poster, Overpowered or Organised Play.
Broken: Unbalanced to the point of being detrimental to the game itself.
Space Cow/Alabaster Void Bison: Lambda Shuttle
Buzzsaw: A ship with FCS and Gunner, does amazingly consistent damage.

Doomshuttle: An Omicron Group Pilot (Lambda Shuttle) with the Darth Vader crew card. Doom applies to both its target and itself.

Terms Nicked from EU:
Scyk: M-3A Interceptor

Eyeball: TIE fighter
Squint: TIE interceptor
Dupe: TIE bomber

You forgot Cosmic Celestial Manatee for the Lambda Shuttle ... a few of us use that too.. lol

If you have an android device there is an App called X-wing companion and it is free. I like it because it list all cards to include upgrades not just by type but also shows the set they came in. It can even list the sets so you can see what is in a set before you make the decision on buying it. It also includes the detailed information like movement dial and stats and point cost. I think you will find it very helpful.
