"Worthy" of attending Worlds?

By Parakitor, in X-Wing

Hey friends. They've just opened registration for Worlds, and I confirmed that it doesn't overlap with a professional conference I am attending. Now I'm toying with the idea of attending Worlds, but I just don't know if I'm good enough, y'know? I didn't even make it to the Saturday finals at Nationals (though I wasn't too far away, either: 37th place).

So how do you decide? For those who have been to Worlds, is there still a wide disparity in pilot skill, or is it really the best of the best?

If the financial concerns are manageable, I'd say do it. Never go to a tournament expecting to win anyway. But at least you'll have a chance to mingle with/marvel at/and pick the brains of the best of the best. I think it would be a fantastic experience.

I think I am going (granted I live like 15 mins from FFG). You have a chance to play some strong opposition and you will always see a group that looks odd but really works well.

A lot of people show up at Worlds just because they live reasonably close by and want to play some X-Wing. You may not make it to the elimination rounds, but that shouldn't stop you from attending if you want to.

I plan on going. I don't plan on winning much, but it'll be hard to live this close and NOT go.

When I go to a tournament, I go there to have fun. I would treat the Worlds the same way. I'm there to have fun, meet new people and play X-Wing. If I happen to win something, great, but it's not the most important thing to me. In fact, if I break even in my win-loss record in a tourney, I consider it a good showing by me.

I went last year and had a blast between just playing some pick-up games and playing 6 hours of furball on Saturday. I went honestly for SWLCG, as X-Wing is my fun game.

That being said, I had a lot of fun in my few rounds of X-Wing I played, and had an absolute blast playing furball with other people from the community. I would go to just play furball again haha.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to look into funds, but it may be a possibility. I'm really glad that X-wing will not be on Sunday, because I just don't play competitively on Sundays. It would be lots of fun to see the friends I met at Nationals again.

Go have fun, if you lose gripe with some people maybe make some friends.

Most players in that event have no realistic shot of winning, most know it, doesn't prevent it from being fun.

I'd say go and run whatever list you think will be fun, if you get lucky and make it chalk up a point to the little guy, if you don't I am sure other stuff like Armada/Imperial Assault demos will be going on or it frees you up to watch the finals with out the pressure of having to play in them

I don't think I could attend an event like this without some hope/delusional intent of actually winning.

Is the game even still fun when you're on your 8th match of the day? Although, to be fair, I guess by that point you already know whether or not you're still in contention, and blind optimism can no longer be maintained.

If it were an event where only the "worthy" were allowed, they'd have a requirement to win a regional to advance, Top 4 or somesuch.

They don't, it's open, and anyone who thinks you have to be "this tall to play" needs to get over themselves.

Play if you want to play, and enjoy it :)

Well, you can smile. I know, because i have seen it personally, so therefore you are worthy of coming to Worlds. It's all about having fun and meeting people anyway. See you there! :)

Does anyone know or want to speculate as to how the two flights work? If you don't make the cut on Thursday, can you try again Friday? Do you have to use the same squad across all the days? Gencon used a similar formats but wasn't able to attend that and am unsure if different considerations would be at play here since space is always so limited at gencon.

Based on what I heard, I'm hoping it's different. I hope players have to stick to one flight or the other and that number of advancing players is a percentage from the total attending the flight and not a set number regardless of attendance.

You really should come. Regardless of how you do, you will probably play some of the best games of xwing you will get in this year. Can't argue with that.

Yeah, a lot of the fun at Worlds was just hanging out and talking with other people into the game. If you had fun at GenCon, then Worlds will be more of the same fun.
