Ready-Made Characters and Lightsabers?

By richienvh, in General Discussion

I've watched the Day 4 video FFG posted on Gen Con and have noticed that players who got to test the game at the convention used some pre-generated characters, most notably a human Guardian and a Cerean Artist... Apparently, theses characters were not at Knight-Level play.

My question regards the fact that at least two of these characters had lightsabers in them (the Guardian and a Kel Dor, which had a double bladed saber). According to the Character Creation rules, however, starting characters start with 500 credits with the option of gaining up to 2500 extra credits...

So,

Did any of you play these characters?

If so, how could they start with restricted items that cost 9000 credits as per the books?

Were their sabers training lightsabers?

I am inquiring as to these matters because I'm afraid I have missed some rule or aspect that allows starting PCs to have lightsabers and, as my copy has just arrived, I have plans to run the adventure within it this weekend....

I played all three of them, and kept the character sheets for two.

None of them were starting level characters, having an additional 100 XP each. So while they weren't quite Knight-level, they were advanced characters.

Their lightsabers were genuine lightsabers, with the Shii-Cho Knight having a "modified" lightsaber that had a base damage of 8 instead of 6 like the Soresu Defender and Niman Disciple (who had a double-bladed lightsaber interestingly enough).

And even then, the GM is allowed to break the rules if he wants. The character generation rules are there to provide a solid baseline that will allow compatibility with other products (like official adventure modules) changing these rules is simply a matter of the GM adjusting the campaign to account for these changes.

If you're making pregen characters for a specific module, you can give the characters whatever you'd like them to have.

I played the Kel Dor. It did not feel game breaking, but then again, the bulk of the adventure involved non-combat challenges.

Are there any plans to make these pegens available to the rest of us so we can get a feel for them?

They did in Age of Rebellion, at least for those of us who got the book from retailers...

I seem to recall that both copies I ordered in Miniature Market were shipped along with 6 pregens, although I can't remember if their sheets were made available via PDF

I don't think they were.

One thing to remember is that you can have a lightsaber for as little as 600CR. 300CR for a lightsaber hilt, and 300CR for a training emitter. The training emitter is damage 6, no crit rating, (crit —), and has the stun damage quality. There are no mod options for it, but it's a cheap alternative for those who don't have (or can't afford) a 10K+ crystal.

I got Age of Rebellion beta from Miniature Market, but I don't think I got any pregens ... if I did, I wonder where they are!

I got the pregen sheets from an amazon reseller, included with AoR. (It was a comic store, and had actually put them in a comic book sleeve with cardboard to protect them. I was impressed.)

May be the wrong thread for this,but...

Just a thought, but I believe that the pregens in EotE Beginner had their equipment plus 400 credits. Another thought is this, you gen a character up, say a smuggler (I know this is F&D), this smuggler has been doing this career long enough to have knowledge in skills, abilities and talents, why not have this semi "trained and minorly established" character have a list of "basic issue" equipment and credits just like the pregens? Heck, the rules allow provisions to give the party a ship at generation of the party. I remember the original online MMO where you had to walk from one city to the next (like walking from Mos Shuuta to Eisley) and you could do that sort of thing at the beginning of a new party's start, but who wants to walk that distance. IMHO, I think even at character creation that the player needs a class specific "basic issue" of credits and equipment that goes along with the skills, abilities, and talents that they already know and the ship that they get for free.

Hey

I just read the miniature markets site, mainly to do with the force and destiny beta. And the book looks to be coming with the prevention characters, I think six it said, don't quote me on it. Follow the link, I'm just hoping that the australian copies arrive in the same condition with all pre gen characters.

Out of curiosity, what are the rules for a double-bladed weapon?

Linked 1. That's it.

Oh... I was perhaps expecting them to be a little better with defence or something, but hey ho.

Thanks for the info, Don. Much appreciated.

If the double bladed lightsaber still has breach 1 on its attack and you manage to use linked 1. Well I reckon that can be fairly lethal, so I reckon its not that bad, especially when it basically means two different attacks. And if you look at the way that Darth Maul uses his lightsaber, it seems to suggest that the weapon is better with an offensive use rather than defensive. Can you get reflect on the double bladed, and if so do the two blade mean, that you could possibly reflect attacks twice.

Well, as a lightsaber, it does still have Breach 1.

As for using Reflect, that talent operates independent of what type of lightsaber you use, so using a double-bladed lightsaber won't get you any more benefit when using Reflect than using a single-blade 'saber or even a shoto.
