Adding Obligation

By Shawnacy, in Game Masters

So recently I ran my group through the adventure included with the Game Master Screen.

Overall I'd say it went pretty well, though I did learn that my group are about as greedy as they get. Not only did they take the 165k that included the miners' wages and upkeep of the mine, but they ended up stealing all of the droids that were not amongst the revolutionaries.

When they returned to Bargos they gave him the 100k. They tried to talk him into giving them both a 10% cut and some obligation removal, but he resisted and they ended up just taking 20 obligation reduction that could be split amongst the party (Bargos may be poor but he still has some strings to pull).

Now this next part is something that I don't see going any which way but horribly wrong.

Bargos knows that there was 165k in the safe, because he was informed by the mine forman who the PCs brought along to their return meeting. The PCs claimed the other 65k was still in the safe when they left.

The Mine forman also knows that the PCs took off with some of his droids. He's pretty convinced the mine is going under, so he might let it slide. He just wants to make sure he gets back to the safe so he can make sure he and his men are paid... wait a minute.

So basically the forman is going to rat out the PCs when he gets back and finds the safe empty. Bargos, who probably wanted to make sure the 65k ended up going toward his debt to the other Hutt, is probably not going to be very pleased with the situation.

So that brings me to what he's going to do about it exactly.

My feeling is that Bargos wants the money. He's probably going to threaten the PCs and demand they pay him back the 65k with interest. Plus some additional for the droids that he could have liquidated.

I'm thinking this should add 25 obligation split between the party. It will start out as a debt, but if not paid in time will quickly change into a bounty. Bargos seems like the type who would spend everything he has to take out those who wronged him.

Any other suggestions for adding new obligation to a party's total?

First whats their current obligation total?

Might want to consider adding a new obligation: Wanted and have them spend a few scenarios discovering the exact nature of this new obligation eventually linking it back to their original maybe even restoring it to its previous level.

Might also want to throw in a few subplots where Bargos sells off the debt the PCs "owe" him to another Hutt and let them handle the PCs...

After all Bargos was taken in originally nothing says he can't do the same to another Hutt say Jabba and maybe have Boba come along with a proposition the PCs can't refuse...

This could lead to an adventure where Boba "persuades" them to sell off a few of those droids to certain interested parties only to discover they're Imperial and the droids turn out to be somewhat modified leaving them on the wrong end of an Imperial investigation!

Nothing says payback like escalating their perils!

I tend to regard the Obligation categories as useful guideposts as to the sort of Obligations characters might have, but ultimately the two things that are really important are the exact nature of the Obligation (which you already understand here better than any descriptor is going to say) and its value. I'd probably just give them an Obligation of 25: Stole the Miners' Pay and call it a day. When it comes up, introduce whatever complication makes sense at the time. Maybe some thugs show up and demand repayment, or perhaps it's bounty hunters. Or maybe it's just that their prospective employer has gotten wind that the party cheated their last employer.

These are helpful thank you. I am planning on running Beyond the Rim next. Perhaps their reputation with cheating Bargos will be well known to Roem and his proposition of the PCs. Roem certainly has more weight and pull in the galaxy than Bargos has. He's going to want his 50/50 split, which he may end up changing to 60/40 on account of the Player's reputation. He'll also make it very clear to them that if he finds out they cheated him, he's going to make their lives a living hell. I believe that part is covered in the book as well, but I'm sure the added knowledge of their dealings with Bargos will make the negotiation a bit more one sided. Roem probably has little to no concern, and possibly even a little disdain for Bargos, so them stealing from him isn't something he's too unhappy about. But if they steal from Roem, god forbid....

Anyway, some group obligation will probably be the way to go. They are all in this together after all. I want to make it higher than the obligation they just had removed otherwise it just seems like what they pulled was a win win. I mean if they had covered it up better they may have gotten away with it. I was rather surprised when they shot down look-out and saved the mine. If it had been destroyed any evidence of their wrongdoing would have been completely wiped away.

Basically the lesson here is if you're going to be naughty, don't get caught.
