HWK-290 repaint - for Scum & Villainy

By morsla, in X-Wing

Hi guys.

First post here - I thought I'd share what I've been working on while waiting for the S&V ships to come out :)

HWK-290-Green-Red-WIP_zpsdb75b97a.jpg

Still early days yet, as I want to add some kill markings, highlights and weathering to it - I'll be adding to it in short bursts on lunch breaks over the next week or so.

That is beautiful! I think it's great you can use those clashing colors and the vibe is perfect. The clean paint job helps too.

I don't care for the color scheme, but you are an absolutely stellar painter.

What was your process here?

That's brilliant, it looks like one of those cars you see driving round with a different coloured door. Love it.

Ps very neat work.

I like the look and it fits really well. Probably my favorite HWK repaint even thought green isn't my thing. Excellent detail around the recessed areas!

Looking good.

I like it, a lot!

But it does remind me of the old GW 'dark future' car wars game , in the campaign rules one of the 'mental disorders' you could pick up through stress or an injury was a desire to paint your car in odd colours.

You had to make two rolls on a chart that had colours like 'lime green', 'mettalic purple' 'Hot pink' on it etc, loads of really clashy shades.

The pink grey and green remind me of this but they actually work really well together as you've kept them quite muted.

Thanks for all the feedback! That Ninja Turtles picture is great - I hadn't stopped to think of where I'd seen the green and red stripes before :D

I've been repainting straight over the top of the factory colour scheme, using acrylic paints (P3 and Vallejo). Coverage seems pretty good, except in areas with a lot of black wash on them - that seems to be an enamel or oil, as it repels the water-based paints. After painting the cockpit struts in red, I left all the other red markings unchanged from the original.

I'm planning to lighten up the green a bit, desaturating the colour by mixing it with some of the grey (VGC "Cold Grey") used on the hull. I found photos of a repainted Firespray by Major Tom 11, painted to match Boba Fett's armour, and decided to try the colour scheme on other Scum ships to see whether it worked. I think the two-tone grey needs more definition, but the overall balance seems to work okay.

Most of the surface detail had just been given a thin black wash when the photo was taken - I gave it a drybrush of lighter grey after work this evening, which has managed to help the details pop out a bit more. I'm hoping that fading the green a bit, and adding some scratches & scrapes will help to blend the wing panels in to the rest of the model a bit more.

Not bad. Normally I wouldn't appreciate something like this but there is something about the choice of colours that draws me in. They clash and shouldn't fit together yet strangely they do and in a good way. If nothing else it is different from all other HWKs I have seen and that alone can be worth alot.

Weekend update:

HWK-290-Green-Red-WIP2_zpsf970932d.jpg

Highlighting added, and some more markings in white and yellow. Still needs some more weathering, particularly some black scorch marks to break up the flat green panels.

I'm not sure whether I should add some paint chipping to the red trim on the engines - I might try one side, as it's easy to fix up if I need to repaint those areas. I'm also not sure what colour the engine glow should be on a ship of this type: I've painted them orange-yellow at the moment, but I think it might actually look better in blue. Any ideas?

Incredible detail. Normally, I would say the contrasting blue engines would look great, but I really like the idea of the harsh orange-yellow on the Scum HWK with that paint-job!

**** fine job there mate.

I really need to find time to do some painting

Thanks :) This has been fun to paint - I wasn't a huge fan of the HWK design before starting to repaint one, but it's been growing on me.

I'll try a slightly darker orange for the engines, as it seems a bit neon at the moment. If that still looks strange, I might have to try a cold blue glow instead - that might help it look more like a "big" ship compared to the fighters, using a different kind of propulsion system. It's clearly been too many years since I last played TIE Fighter, as I can't remember what ship engines are meant to look like in any detail...

Hi, so goes Hawk. Great colourchoice.

I like the way you did it so much and hope to see more pictures of painted ships for this new faction from you. Please keep up the great work.

Happy painting

I love the nose in particular; very fine work.

I very like it!

Call it the albatross. Of I have always been a fan of flak bait. A custom job needs it's own name.
