They should totally think about making a game where you play those space wizard guys with laser swords from the Star Wars movies though. Those guys are bad ass.

I think the title perfectly hits the problem, i (being a new player) for one discoverd that my jedi expectations were too great for what the game actually provides.

More specifically while i never imagined to be able to play Obi-Wan right out of the box, i thought that the starting character could be comparable to Ahsoka, who is a brand new padawan just out of the temple (actually she should have washed out nto the JSC by that time lorewise, but nevermind that xD). Instead i discovered after creating my character that my Jedi is weak as kiitten with a just a couple basic force pwers and a couple of talents, because i could not afford to buy anything else, and that's without increasing the free starting ranks in the skills. It mashes with my character concept and i probably will have to redo the background, but it's really a jarring contrast to what he should be able to do/try and what he can actually accompplish. I have no doubts it will grow to be a powerful and effective jedi, i am doubtful of his effectiveness in the group as it is now.

Considerign that as someone already pointed out the Jedi in this system will be always spread thin, i wonder if FFG didn't make a mistake by giving too few xp points at start. It really feels like playing a D&D starting wizard, and that's something i hate, especially since all other careers seem to be suitably competent at their job right out of the box.

I think the problem you have is that you expect to play Jedi - Force and Destiny allows you to play someone who is trying to tread in their footsteps, not a person who has spent years training since he was a youngling. You're someone who has just learned that he/she is Force Sensitive, and is trying to understand what that means/what he/she can do; whereas a youngling has already spent the better part of a decade training every single day of his/her life .

Thanks for the answer, i think you nailed the problem, my idea of character (a former padawan who spent years frozen in carbonite, so lost his connection to the Force -hence FR1) is probably much better reflected by a "Knight - level" character rather than the starting one. Since the rest of the group and the GM don't want to start with extra xp i'll have to redo the background to account fot the charcter deficiensies -or give him some brain damage xD And find him a mentor too since he can't be self sufficient anymore.

Clearly they're not in the business of diappointing people, because the boards are filled with players (not trolling wannabes) who are loving the game for what it is; also, the fact that the game's selling as well as it is again shows that they're not disappointing people.

You can play Jedi or just about any Force-user in any setting. The tools are all there. While FFG used terms related to Jedi, they did not specifically call them out so that people playing could decide what they want. No or minimal Jedi, allow only one or two people to play them in your EotE or AoR game. Power levels and character growth are equivilant. If you want to play all Force-user games you can. If you want to play high level Jedi or Force-users, you can. Just add XP and stir. This is a big Force tool box that works on its own or with the other two already released toolboxes. How you play, what era, all of it is up to you.

Too true. One of my groups has managed to play from EotE to now and racked up 1500+ xp. The instant they were given one lightsaber spec they began to rock out like qui-gon. Several former talents stack to make up for the small step into the tree they had taken. Dodge and sense started getting described as the player batting bolts away rather than just dodging and evading. That simple change in the narrative is all it took to allow my players to feel like Jedi knights, and I didn't have to change a single thing in the system.

It would seem you need two things to make a Jedi Knight in F&D. A chunk of xp (not necessarily invested in F&D) and a creative imagination. This isn't to say that the beta is good to go, just that FFG met my expectations for Jedi.

Shrug. Oh well. In his own words from the Rebels thread "Haters gonna hate!" He puts out the persona of a disgruntled player forced to play video games on his own in his parents basement because he can't find a group. And because he wants to play and can't, he comes on here for attention. Even if he has played in an RPG group before, if he retains this attitude, I don't imagine he plays for long as nobody wants to play with someone so close- or narrow-minded.

Yes it is a toolkit. But it is a toolkit which can be used on its own or with others. So you can have low-level or high-level play. It is disingenuous to say otherwise. FFG has struck a good balance for a majority of games unless you want to be the king of the hill, as you purport to want.

Erik I suggest you find someone to run a game just for you as the only player so you can be the center of attention and the most powerful Jedi to meet those dreams you have. Oh wait they did. Its called The Force Unleashed. Perfect for all your needs.

You're a force user during the original trilogy's time frame, when jedi are ruthlessly persecuted and hunted and much of their teachings are lost. Players take up characters that are fairly new or greatly estranged from the force because of this.

Well, with enough word of mouth and advertising, yes. Otherwise you'd do what anybody would to somebody that's not in the know and just say it's the new Star Wars RPG, probably specifying that everyone's a force-sensitive if you only have/allow the one book for your campaign.

I sorta mean if you say 'hey guys do you wanna play edge of the empire?' you are saying 'hey guys do you wanna play a bunch of fringers bumbling around in light freighter looking to make a quick buck?' or if you say 'hey guys do you wanna play Age of Rebellion' you mean 'do you wanna play a bunch of rebels fighting the evil empire?'

Having played the first session last night with my newly-updated Smuggler/Scoundrel/Force Emergent/Ataru Striker (opted to go for 'saber badassery vs. Niman's Force prowess) and being at 300+ XP at the moment, I certainly felt that Valin was deserving of the "minor Jedi" moniker. It's true that he's not the most dominant badass in the party (the Wookiee Commando and Chiss Tactician have that covered by a country mile), but he's certainly become quite capable with a blend of 'saber prowess and Force powers. I've not bought that far into the Ataru Striker tree yet (just have on instance of Parry and Reflect as well as the Dodge talent), but he was pretty capable in a fight, a marked change from where he started several months ago. And as someone that has played over-the-top Jedi PCs in prior systems, it's nice to see both the progression and the hint of potential yet to be realized instead (much as you did in D6) vs. the "start out awesome and go from there" that was an issue with Saga Edition.

So I think it is a case of that while you're not going to be playing those badass Jedi we saw in the movies right away, there is the potential to get there. As Master Yoda said, we must learn patience.

As with EotE and AoR you can play various games. From Voyage of Sanbid the Lovable Scoundrel to Return of the Despicable Pirat Durasteelbeard inEotE, to Dawn of the Rebellion to Rise of an Empire. F&D offers the same latitude. All Jedi all the time or allvForce-users brought together. All you need is a little imagination and some friends.

Just remember, while you are sitting patiently at your table week after week, elsewhere this is happening...
