Your first game of Star Wars: Armada

By Papa Midnight, in Star Wars: Armada

As much as it pains me, I'll probably have to lean more heavily toward Rebels just for variety's sake. They should have some excellent fighter builds, at least.

I think that the game mechanics punish fighter heavy fleets. Thats becouse capital ships can fire at EVERY enemy squadron in range. It will keep capital ships more relevant but i wonder if its a fair rule. You can use command orders for fighters to move and atack before enemy capital ship can fire, this way even tough you will take losses you can do some damage beforehand. But by doing that you dont use other commands, and beeing fighter heavy = beeing light on capital ships meaning that the enemy focus your ships and gain victory this way.

Fighter heavy fleets, yes. But by the same token the game as we've seen so far also punishes those who ignore fighters.

I think balance between the two is key here. If you take too many fighters, you'll encourage your opponent to spam anti-squadron fire to wipe out your fighters and mop up your capitals. If you don't take fighters, you risk being outmanoeuvred by a balanced fighter/capital fleet.

The difference between factions also seems to matter. The Imperials have generally weaker fighters from what we've seen, but their capital ships pack far more punishment. Whereas the rebels can take fighters more easily and can expect to lose them less quickly, while also having the bomber rule on most of their fighters, making them far better suited for capital ship hunting.

On the other hand, squad command on VSD might be devastating and swarm special rule gives them nice anti-fighter bonus.

Rebels also have better anti suadron values, Nebulon has 3 while Victory 2.

WIth basic fighters empire probably hsould just use them to screen their capital ships as it was mentioned in the gen con video.

I agree, until we know more I'm assuming you want between 50 and 75 points of fighters in your list.

Also basic victory conditions they said were to eliminate capital ships. So if you pack 50% of your points into fighters all I have to do is buy my ships enough time to blow your 1-2 ships away and then its game over. As far as being able to attack all squadrons in range it has me thinking of just throwing up a wall of AA around your ships daring the opponent to fly through it. (Like what the Executor tried to do at Endor)

What am I looking forward to? Moving up a ISD into range 1 of a blockade runner, and vaping the little guy in one glorious barrage.

The Nebulon B Frigate model. Still my favorite ship.

The Nebulon B Frigate model. Still my favorite ship.

Not my favorite Star Wars ship model, though I do have very fond memories of it, but definitely my favorite Star Wars ship model to appear in the movies and TV serieses so far I'm hoping some will show up in Rebels with a successor design appearing in the ST

I just hope they don't go the PT warship route and make all of the combat capital ships in the ST Heavy Cruisers or larger. The smallest warship we see fighting in the prequels would be only slightly small then a Victory so big Sil 7 or Small Sil 8 in FFG terms with the big ones probably being Sil 9 though they might be very large 8s.

I'm looking forward to give an order to my Home One to the shouting ,"It`s a trap!!" and unload al my freedom power over a isd...

Actually, I'm looking forward to directing my fleet into an asteroid field in order to surprise my opponent. Then I shall look at him and say: "Asteroids don't concern me, Admiral."

What are you looking forward to when you play your first game?

The terrain pieces and the actual game board?

What is this about an actual game board? Have I missed a bit of info??? Where may I find said info?

As to what i'm looking forward too...

All of it.

I'm a huge starship fan, so I am very excited. To me this looks like a tabletop version of Star Wars Empires at War, which is one of my favorites. 2015 can't come soon enough.

Well, looks like we mostly have Empire fans here. Fine with me! I don't care about commanding big triangles or small and loud little hexagons anyway. (Just playing, folks~) In any case I just want to give it a shot. I still don't know if.this is the game for me, but the minis already look so great. I do look forwards to customizing my fleet if I do buy expansions! I have some simple paintjobs in mind for a couple of corvettes. :3

I play primarily Imperials for X-wing so it would be a little odd to switch sides when the big toys are out, on the other hand I do have an "underdog complex" I played DE as my first 40k army when they had a 10 year old codex, I play Interceptors/Defenders for X-wing, so I might end up using Rebels if the "competitive" players are all using Imperials

Though I will fly Imperials on occasion just to get my evil on, I am definitely a Rebel enthusiast.

Give me those Mon Cals, baby, and keep your cookies!

I'm looking forward to being an imperial warlord. There were plenty of them in the books, and they usually had charature to them.

What I'm most looking forward to is moving my VSDs and making phew phew noises :D

In space no-one can hear you pew pew... sorry wrong franchise :D

I'm looking forward to the difference in scale from X-Wing and then trying to plan linked games

Me too I am thinking about instead of "squadrons" being engaged treat it more like flights of 3 or 4 per "squadron" and instead of rolling dice for squadron v squadron shooting play a game, and then when a capital ship fires at the squadron take an appropriate amount of damage. (Something like 3 X-wing Hull/Shields for 1 Squadron HP with a 3 ship flight)

All of the above. Plus I want to be able to utter various movie phrases at appropriate game moments...

Even in the nonappropriate game moments say those movie phrases, psychological warfare and what not

"Fetchez la vache!"

Wait, wrong movie!

I flew my VSD off the map in my first game. My 2nd game only fared slightly better and can be seen here:

(Thx to FFG/Enigma for flying in 3 demo copies from China to us and not least to my mate BlasterBo for asking me to play with him)

This is a relevant thread resurrection! :-) My partner and I will be clearing our calendar for an evening the first weekend after release to learn the ropes. I think (hope?) that some of my excitement has rubbed off on her over the past several months. Between the two of us, the Empire seems to suit her better for what she likes in a game. The long term planning, calculation and ridiculous power of the Star Destroyer is very her... and I will be looking forward to harassing her with my (probably?) totally not ideal triple Nebulon-B list after the expansions arrive, because that is far and away my favorite capital ship.

I'm most looking forward to the implacable advance of my Star Destroyers, driving the Rebel scum before me before unleashing a devastating volley of turbolaser fire that reduces them to specs of dust that will forever float in the empty void of space

Saying: Your fleet is lost. And your friends will not survive (a lift misquote of the emperor)

Setting up everything I purchased on their respective sides, a commander each, throw in an upgrade or two and fight a grand battle.
