Wizkids' second try

By Animewarsdude, in X-Wing

Or instead of wasting time with that they could redo Crimson Skies

I still find the old X-Box game to be heaps of fun.

I don't like it....I'd rather see a 'Wing Commander' Miniatures game using the Flightpath system

Yes but Babylon 5 first....

Then a battlestar flight path game

Then do wingcommander

Not going to buy this, but it actually made me think of a game I would buy instantly!

You know, there is a certain book written by Naomi Novik, called His Majesty´s Dragon, the series being known as Temeraire Cycle. What is it about? It´s an alternative history of our world in which dragons roam the skies as... creatures bred for aerial warfare. Set during the era of Napoleonic Wars, these books are astonishingly well written and full of wonderful characters.

There I see potential. Peter Jackson bought the licence to make movie out of the books and I hope he will make them fair. I really hope that FFG will then acquire the rights and will ride upon the popularity which the movies may awaken.

Dragons with sharpshooter units on their backs, boarding each other in order for their crews to capture enemy dragon´s captain and all of those fascinating dragon breeds. What a variety that would be! One can dream...

On the off chance you have not seen the second hobbit film the dragon Smaug is easily one of the most awesome things to grace the big screen.

Why do I point this out? Well because if Peter Jackson makes a film then Weta will be doing the effects.

Only Stan Winston makes better, and he, sadly is no longer with us in the mortal realm :'(

Urgh weta needs a slap there are several terrible cgi effects in the 2nd hobbit film, like orcs running into the distance instead run up the screen,

Smaug was overdone. Too much screen time. He became common and comical...it was like wiley coyote with anvils falling on him.

(excluding 4th ed but thats only me and my group as it didnt fit our playstyle, just in case anyone reading really loves 4th ed).

That would be me. There are things that didn't work about it (and things that worked fine before WotC started fixing them), but in comparison to Third Edition and 3.5 it was an enormous improvement.

I just got my 5th ed PHB and im instantly obsessed all over again.I already own some questionable D&D branded items just because they are D&D.

See, I'd say the 5th Edition PHB is a questionable D&D-branded item.

As a fun fact the retail price is $49.99, granted that is half the cost of Armada but for an X-Wing clone that is a tad steep.

Psst, you know X-wing is already a clone right?

X-wing is similar to Wings of War conceptually but handles a lot of things differently mechanically. but Attack Wing and Dragon Attack Wing are direct clones. Literally two things change: the theme and the competence and care of the people in charge.

Dammit, now I'm wavering. I know it's Wizkids, and that means I know their follow-through isn't going to be as good as FFG's. But if it actually has some tactical depth... and it's dragons ...

It may be dragons... but they're WizKids Dragons.

Zero interest. Actually, close to zero as I clearly have enough interest to say I have zero interest.

Huh, those troop formation rules are interesting. I suppose the point soldier specifics are so that you can't swing your troops around while hiding your most important dude out of range, but if also would make envelopment strategies only work with multiple units. Anyone with more table-top experience know of similar stuff?

Bits of this game look really fun, which just makes me sad that Andrew Parks isn't on Attack Wing anymore, and that Attack Wing has turned out the way it has. The new guy doesn't answer often in the FAQ, maybe once or twice a month, and the game is so off the rails that the FAQ is fully necessary to keep it working in any way, shape, or form.

Also, I'm used to thinking of dragons like Smaug, as solitary creatures. In D&D computer games at least sometimes they'd have like goblins and stuff living in the front of their dens, but is there much reason to have them leading armies? How much of this game will be 1v1 dragon duels? If they care about war and politics then you'd need them as signatories on treaties, running their own little foreign service staffed by bugbears, setting tariffs, supervising the entrepot... It just seems odd.

If by "odd" you mean extremely awesome , then yes.

[scurries off to make campaign notes]

I am curious on how they handle ground units movement in a flight path system. I would think the maneuvers would be unnatural, a hex base with only straight templates might be interesting.

I doubt I'd buy gold bullion if WizKids was selling it, even for a fire-sale price. They'd just find a way to devalue it to near worthless with the first expansion.

Sails of Glory http://www.aresgames.eu/category/games/sails-of-glory-games seems an interesting approach to me for the flightpath mechanic. As opposed to WWI/II /StarWars/dragons dogfighting, Napoleonic naval warfare is entirely 2-D.

This game does look awesome, but it's not really "Flight Path," which is the FFG system for X-wing that is being licensed for the Attack Wing games. Sails of Glory is a nautical adaptation of the Wings of War/Glory system, which is similar, but mechanically distinct as a game system.

You know something went wrong with this game when it's about armies supported by dragons... and it's set in the Forgotten Realms instead of the Dragonlance setting.

As for dragonriders in the Napoleonic setting, I'm going to have to go read those books soon. Hopefully those are turned into a movie, and eventually games. :)

Silly WoTC, you HAD a dragonrider setting and you pissed it away. Now that might become the in-thing and you'll seem like a "me too" if you try to make use of it AFTER any Peter Jackson movies come out.

At least is looks like they may have gone back to the pre-4th green dragon appearance although it is hard to tell from this picture. I really didn't like how the green dragon appearance changed moving into 4e.

As for the game I think it looks interesting and may consider it but who much support I'd give it may depend on where they go with it. I know I got sick of MtG because of all the power creep in there and rebuying everything every couple of years because things rotated in or out.

I didn't read through the whole thread, but I have point out. There are in fact many more then just 10 dragons. There might be 10, core dragons but there is in fact more like 30 dragons at least. It has been awhile since I've counted them all, but some are very obscure including my favorite, the shadow dragon.

Upthread:

I'm thinking each dragon is its own expansion, with a younger generic version, an older generic, and a unique version. If they did one metallic, one chromatic, and a couple of ground units per wave, that clears them through Waves 1-5.

Then you can get into planar dragons and gem dragons, which are sort of the D&D equivalent of the Star Wars EU--well established in "canon", but not as well-known.

The Shadow Dragon, live! New Jersey's biggest coverband and laser light show!

I'd buy this:

Pretty sure during the marvel comic run they had dragons in some stories, 70s were weird time man...so I'm told I didn't exist of course until the 80s.

I'll just leave these here.

Not only do they make floppy Star Trek models, but they're going to make a weird dragon game too? I do like that they've got ground forces involved (from what I hear), but this sounds like it's going to be awful. I'll stick to X-Wing for now. And maybe Sails of Glory. I forgot about that game.
