Wizkids' second try

By Animewarsdude, in X-Wing

Is it just me thinking that the 'demoguy' from the video must be a a second hand car vendor with atleast 50% weasel DNA mixed in?

**** his smug face makes me write off this game from the start,

to bad I was curious about this, but hey on the bright side, lets go with 4 IG2000's instead! :D

I do like the recharge mechanic on breath weapons, I wish ordnance and bombs in X-Wing worked like that. Crits bypassing armor is interesting too. Otherwise I'm not impressed, I'd never but it, but I'd try it if someone offered a game.

I refuse to support anything Wizkids puts out. Plus this looks just a little silly...

I take it wizkids has a history of abandoning their games?

Something like that, yeah. They have a history of acquiring IP licenses (Marvel, Mechwarrior, Halo, etc.), putting out a game with some promise, and then rushing out expansions without a lot of evident care with design, playtesting, etc.

They also went bankrupt* for a little while in the mid-2000s, partly as a result of that practice, which didn't help their reputation much.

[EDIT: Apparently I was remembering some details wrong: Wizkids was shut down as a brand by their parent company in 2008, before the name and most of their assets were purchased by NECA.]

Wizkids was shut down by their company, but Topps owned them and shut them down. I was into Horrorclix by them. They had four major expansions and a few minor ones. I liked the cleaner style of play it had compared to Heroclix, but after about a year and half, support and interest dropped even though they continued with a few more expansions.(obviously for a money grab). I have almost every miniature and I still love THIS game, but I wont be giving Wizkids ANY more of my money.

I am thinking about it but I will be more selective with this than I was for Star Trek and X-wing

Mostly I want an army of giants

I do like the size of them. Maybe put them in X-Wing as gigantic mynoks?

The attack from the rear arc is particularly devastating.

Yeah. And their special ability would be "Chewing On Your Power Cables" :P

The good thing I can see out of this is that a good company, FFG, gets money from the Flightpath license. I guess that's about it.

Yeah there is that.

Or instead of wasting time with that they could redo Crimson Skies

I don't like it

I'd rather see a 'Wing Commander' Miniatures game using the Flightpath system

Every time I contemplate this gamer my gut reaction is "LAME!"

I guess it just goes to show how important theme is

I love dragons. I mean just look at my name. But being familiar with Wizkids as a company... I must regretfully pass. I soooooo wish FFG were the ones behind this.

On the other hand I don't... I love X-Wing and couldn't afford both and still get into Armada. :)

Not going to buy this, but it actually made me think of a game I would buy instantly!

You know, there is a certain book written by Naomi Novik, called His Majesty´s Dragon, the series being known as Temeraire Cycle. What is it about? It´s an alternative history of our world in which dragons roam the skies as... creatures bred for aerial warfare. Set during the era of Napoleonic Wars, these books are astonishingly well written and full of wonderful characters.

There I see potential. Peter Jackson bought the licence to make movie out of the books and I hope he will make them fair. I really hope that FFG will then acquire the rights and will ride upon the popularity which the movies may awaken.

Dragons with sharpshooter units on their backs, boarding each other in order for their crews to capture enemy dragon´s captain and all of those fascinating dragon breeds. What a variety that would be! One can dream...

I love D&D, really love it. Its my favourite rpg of all time and since im a roleplayer first and foremost that makes it my favourite game of all time (excluding 4th ed but thats only me and my group as it didnt fit our playstyle, just in case anyone reading really loves 4th ed). I just got my 5th ed PHB and im instantly obsessed all over again.I already own some questionable D&D branded items just because they are D&D. Even with all this I will not be buying this. I dont like wizkids as they nearly killed shadowrun and from what ive heard of the way they handle attack wing, with power creep, con exclusives and terrible customer service and so I dont want to buy into a game administered by them with average miniatures.

If I want to play a D&D battle game with dragons ill break out my old Dragonlance board game.

Also, I have to add that the guy in that video was disturbing, no one is that happy and gleeful when explaining how a game works.

kinda cute idea about the game is it's the normal minis scale, note the ground models are on 25mm bases for use in the RPG and clip onto movement bases for this game. It's a clever way to hit 2 targets with the one product. The sculpts and paint look alright too for prepaints, obviously a wash and some highlighting could make them better but I dig the airbrushed red to black wings on the red dragon that's better than 90% of warhammer painted armies quality out there.

As for how it plays who knows until you try, seeing 4 attack and 1 agility right in the starter set isn't too encouraging, attack wing is full of that and crits bypassing shields/armour seems an interesting though probably devastating idea. I'm very curious to see what their ground rules are like just for ideas to borrow to do AT-ATs and Hoth stuff.

After what wizkidz did to mechwarrior they are never getting my money again, pass.

When it comes down to it personally, I like hardware over wetware so I'm passing on DragonWing just for that.

Some of the mechanics did seem interesting but I kind of wish they put this much thought and development into Attack Wing in the beginning, then it wouldn't be such a poopy mod of an otherwise excellent game.

At least all the star wars fans who wanted their ground combat stuff can take cues from DragonWing on how to do it in X-Wing? And find out why Ground combat in X-Wing just won't work as well as they thought it would?

Ultimately they'll probably break this like they're breaking attack wing. Apart from Borg movement, most of the destruction seems to come out of the reckless upgrade cards they slip into the game with each new expansion and promo. And for anyone who didn't notice, it seems like the rules text on all their cards is getting smaller and smaller and smaller .... to accomodate more and more rules and exceptions into the cards. A sign of bad game design methinks.

I could see buying this to resolve dragon battles in my DnD games, but that's about it.

Too many miniatures games to keep up with to add another flightpath re-skin of X-wing

I saw this coming.

I will say this, the games looks a lot better than their Star Trek Dogfighting game. I like the idea that they can land and fly and that they can be supported by ground troops. The problem is, WizKids is not a very good company, I would trust Hasbro to do this more than WizKids. But it will be a game to at least try, if it sucks, it is not surprising.

I'm holding out for the My Little Pony flight path game. That's gonna be sick!

Man that'd only work with Pegasi and Gryphons.

...That said, since horses trample stuff, that'd allow some interesting mechanics in terms of overlapping... and if you're doing bucking, then you'd have an aux. firing ar-...

DON'T GET ME THINKING ABOUT THIS IT'S TOO DANGEROUS BECAUSE I CAN MAKE IT WORK.

The Temeraire series was very good. Supposedly Peter Jackon was impressed enough to option the rights to make a movie of it. Or movies that is

Why not just have it so it is a My Little Pony vs Dungeons and Dragons game. I don't know much about either really but the idea of "realistic" looking giant dragons facing off against cartoon chibi-fied horses sounds hilarious!

They know that Dragons can hover, right?

And then fly in any direction they want, right?

The only reason to buy this is to tear the dragons off their stands and use them in RPG's :)

Plus, given that those interested are likely to have all the required figures anyway, just DL what you need and play for free LOL

This has some cool ideas. You can read the rulebook here . They even have rules for infantry formations and 'point soldiers', which may be cool or completely terrible in actual practice, but I like the concept. It's also nice to see spells introduced to the system, which gets me nostalgic for the old D&D Minis game. And there's the problem, that most of my interest may be nostalgia driven.

If I hadn't known this was already in development for half a year, I would've half expected this to be "D&D: Warhost" using SW:Armada mechanics with Dragons (and Giants?) as the capital ships and infantry regiments as the fighter squadrons. I could picture a starter set featuring the Cormyrian army facing off against a Cult of the Dragon sect with Dracoliches. Heck, it would probably play pretty well.
