Ship naming Thread

By GrandAdmiralCrunch, in Star Wars: Armada

This may seem odd to some, but I intend to choose names for my ships. Make session reports more flavorful, and perhaps develope a tighter connection to the ships I field regularly. I don't know if they will do titles like they have in X-Wing, but until we find out, here are some I plan to use. Please add your own.

I'm with you. I haven't named every ship, but I have not only named the ships for my planned starter fleet(3 corvettes and a nebulon) but I've even named the captains!!

And I see what you did with the gladiator names, and appreciate it

I still remember playing Rebellion and naming all my rebel ships after pokemon... On topic, I feel like imperials need to have cruel or hostile names tied into their role:

Gladiator-Class I'm assuming will be a long range ship, so it'll get things like:
Agony's Whip

Viper's Rebuke

Steel Talon

Victory-Class gets the names that are mean without being general, hard words (such as Corruptor or Aggressor, which will be tied to the Imperial-Class):

Asp

Spider's Kiss

Dirge

Forlorn Hope

Rebel ships always seem to have positive names occasionally tied to planets or locations, but I haven't been able to separate them by ship type like I have for Imperials, though general names typically get assigned to larger ships, so things like:

Redemption

Liberty

Agamar's Glory (I'm totally naming a Mk II Frigate this. None of you can have it.)

Spirit of Yavin IV

Light of Alderaan

I don't know if they will do titles like they have in X-Wing, but until we find out, here are some I plan to use.

Ship title cards are definitely in the game. They're currently not in any preview pics but trust me they're in.

I only have one perfect name thus far and I'm not sure which ship it'll fit at the moment but essentially the captain of the ship and most of the crew will have been from Alderaan and so it will be named "Orphans Vengeance"

I know I'll be painting one of my corvettes to match the scheme I've set for my X-Wing one. Also, when I get rebel ships I'll be considering different schemes for them to mirror what I do for my X-Wing rebels.

About the only name I've determined is for one of the VSDs, the Fairlight , after the com truise song.

Ship title cards are definitely in the game. They're currently not in any preview pics but trust me they're in.

I had a feeling they would be. Even so, I'm sure they will cost points that players might not have to spend. I would feel awkward leaving them naked.

I vote for "Bob".

Since this game involves dice, I think I will have to name a few ships something along the lines of the following:

All-In

Even Money

Over/Under

Lady Luck

The Gambler

Hand of Fate

Feeling Lucky, Punk?

Oh, ****!

It's an ISD name (from the Zahn trilogy), but I've always really liked "Death's Head."

I vote for "Bob".

You can't call a spaceship bob!

I vote for "Bob".

You can't call a spaceship bob!

"Hurry up and get back to Bob so we can get off this rock!"

My mind was more on the Titan AE reference, but that works too. :D

"This won't take long. You go back get Bob running."

I'm totally naming one of my ships the "Clint Eastwood" (just gotta find a good gunfighter ship). I'll probably name one of the Corvettes the "Razor" after the Rogue Squadron video game and another the "Corsair". I'll probably also name one of the frigates the "Normandy" (Mass Effect).

I might continue the trend I and my friends had in Star Trek Online and name my ships after drinks. Black Velvet, Green Vesper, there are some good names in the world of drunks for the sober to use.

Edited by keroko

I have a few picked out though some of these are for ship types I hope come rather then ones I know are coming. Most of these are tied to RP campaigns I've been in

Edit: I realized I hadn't included any explanations for how vessels that were Privateer ships originally became regular Alliance ships for Armada. I'll to something similar for the Marauders if they appear in game as a model of ship used a third faction. .

Rebel ships

Nebulon-B Escort Frigate:

Fireheart=An Alliance captured Nebulon-B that was the first capital ship any of my Star Wars RPG characters, or any of my RPG characters for that matter commanded. (He scored a very lucky shot which disabled its lasers on one side leading to its crew surrendering after its TIEs were wiped out.

Starthorn=A Nebulon-B which my character commanded in a campaign that started with him taking command of the ship just before Endor. He was XO and the ship had been ambushed while beginning its run to Sullust with the Captain and several other crew members dying in the engagement.

Liberty's Spear=A Nebulon-B an alt of mine commanded during a campaign which included a mission where we had to punch a hole in an Imperial blockade to allow Mon Mothma from a meeting with the leader's of an independent resistance cell which the Imperials had crashed with a Interdictor and escort ships.

Nebulon-B Support Frigate:

Stacked Deck=A Nebulon-B that the party in an Alliance Privateer campaign I was part of bought with a combination of our gambler characters winnings from a Sabacc Tournament that the rest of the party used as a distraction while we robbed a nearby bank, and the bank heist.

The Armada version accepted an offer to join the Alliance fleet when costs of supplies and repairs began to outweigh what they were gaining from their raids. We actually received such an offer in the campaign but were still debating accepting it when the GM had to stop attending for several months due to family issues so we switched to a new campaign.

Black Flag=A Nebulon-B which an EOE party I was in helped steal to pay off our obligation to the dealer who leased us our starting ship. It was sold to our party in a SAGA Alliance Privateer campaign I was in years ago.

The Armada version was given to the Alliance on the condition that they never rename it after the group captured a Nebulon-B2 and switched their operation to it. The capture of the Nebulon-B2 and its convoy was the final battle of the Black Flag crew's campaign.

Freedom's Edge=Originally a badly damaged Nebulon-B captured by an independent planet's defense force during a botched Imperial assault on their world. (Part of the planned attack fleet was diverted to deal with a CIS holdout fleet raiding a nearby ship building center and the message warning the rest of the attack force to hold didn't get through.) After a second overwhelming attack hit soon after patchwork repairs were completed the surviving ships of the defense fleet scattered with the crew of Freedom's Edge deciding to become anti-Imperial pirates (This was a few years pre-Alliance) and later Alliance Privateers/ (The crew started running a modded CR90 and the GM expected us t have to flee the first battle rather then the second but such we managed to win the first battle he gave us the captured Neb-B as a reward though at first it had penalties to hanger capacity, shields, and damage resistance until we managed to scrape up the resources and contacts to repair her.)

The Armada Version chose to accept an offer to join the Alliance fleet rather then become privateers (The GM made the offer to the players and becoming a privateer ship won in a 4/3 vote among the player characters.

CR90A Corvettes:

Arrowhead=One of two CR90s that were part of a fleet an RPG character of mine was assigned to train and ended up leading into battle

Crossbow=The other CR90 from that fleet.

CR90B Corvettes:

Octil=A modded New Republic CR90 assigned to my party in a D6 campaign where we were assigned to scout the Deep Core for Imperial outposts.

Flashfire=A modded Alliance Privateer CR90 that my party in the campaign where we eventually got the Black Flag served on for a few missions before capturing what became our first Party commanded ship. (We were the prize crew assigned to a captured Action VI which we converted to a modded Interceptor class Frigate after Flashfire was destroyed before returning to the shadowport we were based out of).

The Armada version escaped the battle where she was destroyed in the campaign but was badly damaged, too badly for the crew to afford repairs. The Alliance offered to buy the vessel, repair it and give those officers and crew who wanted to join the Alliance Fleet commissions, an offer most of the crew including the command staff took while those who didn't joined the crew of the Hookblade (Our modded Interceptor class) and carried on as Privateers.

Assault Frigate Mark IIA:

Hope Eternal=An Assault Frigate Mark II which was one of three constructed with funds from an RP character of mine's family. The character was from Ralltiir, a retired corvette captain in its customs fleet and ran a small shipping business but his family was very rich. While their bank accounts were seized and most of the members were killed during the invasion a few members and many of their valuables managed to escape on the transports he owned or their yachts and they sold most of those off via agents then donated the money to the rebellion

Liberation's Fury=An Assault Frigate Mark II which was rescued from an Imperial ambush by a task force led by an old character of mine which later became part of that task force when it was expanded in preparation for Endor.

Assault Frigate Mark IIB:

Sword of Justice=An Assault Frigate Mark II one of my RP characters was commanding during a shakedown cruise <The assigned captain hadn't arrived yet> that ended up turning into a mission to rescue the leaders of a local allied planet from a Strike-class Cruiser and was promoted to permanent command of the vessel while the originally scheduled captain got the next one out of the yards.

Tyranny's Fall=An Assault Frigate Mark II which was the first cruiser class vessel assigned to the Nicodemus fleet.

Rebel ships that I hope are coming

DP20 Frigate (AKA Corellian Gunship):

Daredevil=An Alliance DP20 named Daredevil was the first warship one of my RP characters commanded for more then one battle, and after he got promoted to Section and later Squadron command Dardevil was part of his command though it wasn't his flagship. That honor went to the second ship he commanded in multiple engagements, and then later an MC80 that was added to his command.

Justice=A New Republic modded DP20 She was a testbed for some of the new tech and upgrades that went into the Ranger class> which served as the first longterm command of my character in a Vong War era campaign and several campaigns set later.

Starblade=A Corellian Sector Force DP20 which one of my RPG group's parties served as bridge crew of. It was eventually sent to the main Alliance fleet and destroyed at Endor.

Marauder class Corvette (Could also be a third faction ship but wasn't uncommon in Alliance forces in Legends, and is reasonably easy for civilians to purchase in my opinion so my RPG groups often have Alliance Marauders appear in campaigns)

Daedalus=An Alliance Marauder class ship which was the vessel Justice's captain served on during his training, and through the Battle of Endor, including commanding it for the last hour of the battle.

Broken Chains=An Alliance Marauder crewed by one of our RPG parties, a group of Corporate Sector escapees and exiles who felt that the only hope of tearing down the Corporate Sector government was an Alliance victory over the Empire.

MC30C Frigate

Nicodemus=The second ship Daredevil's captain commanded long term and his flagship during his time as a Section commander, and most of his time as a Squadron commander.

Demeter =An MC30C that was attached to a New Republic Task Force assigned to raid the Imperial controlled Core areas during a Dark Empire era Campaign

Prometheus=A second MC30C attached to that taskforce and the force's flagship.

MC80 Star Cruiser.

Freedom's Star=The flagship of my first Alliance Navy RPG character to reach the rank of Line Admiral.

I think between these I should be able to put together a good force for any likely scenarios unless they make a command the entire Alliance Fleet at Endor Scenario though there are a few other Alliance ship classes that I'll buy a couple of in a heartbeat if they show up in game.

Edited by RogueCorona

Namin g is good. I cant think of agame where we didnt name as many ships as possible. The GM even went so far as to design the random dice roll Star Wars ship name generator. The only hesitation i would have is that to me Forlorn Hope should be a Rebel ship name considering its origins in heroism.

Other than existing canon names, you mean? I'm something of a historian, even when it comes to fictional universes, so I'll certainly have Devastator (Imperial), Chimaera (Imperial), Home One (MC-80), Tantive IV (CR-90), Redemption (EF-76), and the like. After that, though I'll probably dig into my EotE GM notes for ships.

Impaler (Imperial)

Javelin (Victory)

Tears of Iego (CR-90)

Oh, that reminded me of another good one: Monarch.

Which, if I recall correctly, was the Emperor's flagship ISD in the original TIE Fighter game.

Valiant is a good one too. And Royal Sovereign.

When I was younger I could probably name 50+ ISDs from the EU. Now I could maybe do like...10. I need to find a way to load up one of my old Rebellion saved games, that'd be a great resource.

Degree at least partially in naval history. I'm going to name every ship I have, and I'm strongly considering doing so semi-permanently on their bases somehow. Once I own a ship, its name will stay the same for as long as I own it. My friends and opponents will know them and fear them.

I've played lots of other games, from Age of Sail and WW2 to sci-fi like Babylon 5, Star Trek, and BFG. I've named probably nearly a hundred ships in my gaming career. I intend to continue on as I always have.

Eldar and Narn ships were probably the most challenging... Klingon and Romulan ships, luckily, have decently-sized languages to choose from (assuming we can use Vulcan as a baseline for Romulan).

I think the "freedom" versus "oppression" theme in Star Wars lends itself to some very thematic names that should be fun to work with.

I vote for "Bob".

You can't call a spaceship bob!

Well, who made you the captain of Bob ?

I don't know how I possibly could have forgotten but if they make an Imp-Star-Deuce (Imperial Star Destroyer for non X-wing series readers) I am ABSOLUTELY naming one the "Chimaera". It has to be done. There has to be a title card.

I'd be shocked if there wasn't.
